The Battle of Vale is over. Professor Ozpin is dead and the CCT is down. As the world is plunged into the darkness of a communications blackout, and Vale reels from its near fall to the grimm, Sunset Shimmer finds herself living a somewhat quiet, somewhat circumscribed existence in the historic town of Mount Aris, where she, ably assisted by Penny Polendina, serves the former first Councillor, Aspen Emerald, as a huntress, fighting to keep the gathering darkness at bay.
If Sunset's life feels circumscribed in Mount Aris, that's nothing compared to the sense of captivity felt by Cinder Fall, who is presumed dead in the chaos of the Battle of Vale. Trapped in the house she shares with Sunset and Penny, Cinder does what she can to embrace the quiet domesticity of cooking and housekeeping, but her spirit is sorely tested by worry for Sunset, and her hands itch to find a way to put her lethal skills to use once more.
When the Mayor of Mount Aris, tasks Sunset with forming a force to actively defend Mount Aris from danger, Sunset, Penny and Cinder are plunged into a struggle to defend their new home - and to defend the better selves Sunset and Cinder seek to become.
