Work Text:

I almost kissed her

He spoke to the moon, he couldn’t tell anyone else, but he could tell the moon.
I almost kissed her
And by the way, she looked at me
She almost kissed back,

He sat against the pool chair, watching as his friend lit up the pool bringing the bottle up to his lips, how Jet was able to smuggle in a bottle of tequila would remain a mystery, but he just drank it.

Ricky didn’t drink much he preferred weed as his bad habit of choice, but, he was trying to quit so he took the bottle Jet handed him after he explained what happened,
How he almost kissed her.

How her boyfriend was standing right there but he didn’t care because all he wanted in that moment was her,

“Whatcha doin’ out here so late” he blushed when he thought the moon was speaking back to him.

Maybe he was drunker than he thought.

“ I could ask you the same thing” he tilted his head to get a better look at the girl, the girl the moon was shining on like a spotlight.
She was gorgeous.

Gina just shrugged, ever so slightly like moving would ruin the moment neither kid knew they were having.

“Couldn’t sleep, I like to watch the stars” she played with the rock underneath her sandal. Ricky took her in, her braids tucked into a bonnet, with a matching silk pajama set.

“Same” it wasn't exactly a lie. He patted the yellow and white striped chair next to him.

“Join us”

“Us?”

“Me and the moon” he took another sip as the reason for his drinking sat next to him.

“You okay” he studied her.

“Today was just” Her breath before she continued was contagious “Today was just a lot-EJ and I kinda broke up tonight” Ricky’s blood ran cold and he fought everything in his bones not to down the remainder of the bottle.

“I-I hope it wasn’t because of-”

“No, I-I just realized I didn’t really see him as more than a friend, our relationship wasn’t really working out, it’s been a long time coming” It felt good to say it out loud, to say it in a way that wasn’t laced with sadness.

The little hum Ricky Bowen saved for Gina Porter hung over them like a cloud.

“Why couldn’t you sleep”

“You can’t get tipsy in the cabin, besides I needed to talk to someone” he nodded up to the moon, her nose scrunched as he held up the bottle, but at the same time, he wore a look of curiosity.

“Where the hell did you get tequila”

“Jet,” he said plainly the kids fell into silence, the moon staring down at them yelling at them to say something,

“Let's dance”

“Oh that alcohol is catching up to you”

“Nah” he waved her off, rolling off the chair and ignoring the spin the world had.

“Come on Anna” Gina felt the blood run to her cheeks, and she hid in her hands.

“Gonna make me stand here all night” Gina giggled in her hands and before she could think better of it she took the fastest swig of the alcohol and let him lead her up.

“You smell like vanilla” he spoke, almost in a trance

“And you smell like alcohol”

“Guilty” he let his hands find her waist, they looked like they did when they were rehearsing earlier when,

I almost kissed her, the four words were back. Stupid theater making things confusing, he wanted to blame it on good acting but he couldn’t, who was he kidding he was a terrible actor.

“I should have kissed you earlier” When he talked he let the alcohol take over. Gina felt herself shift from foot to foot. Looking down at the ground instead of the boy who lingered in front of her,

speaking without any thought.

She blamed it on the tequila.

But on the other hand,

He did want to kiss her

“About that…” she started “that was kinda intense, and I guess I’m wondering ..why that is.” she felt herself fall closer to Ricky, but he didn’t seem to mind.

“I dunno, you do that to me Porter, always have” The two kids fell closer to one another feeling the warmth the other kid radiated.

“Gina I want to kiss you”

“Your tipsy, you don’t know what you're talking about”

“I know this, I want to kiss you. Opening night of Hsm, Valentine's Day, and Every day since. Gina, you're all I want and I won't let you slip away again” So she had been right, and better off she hadn’t been alone, this whole time she felt she was crazy, that he would never see her in that way he was too hung up on Nini and her time of distracting him was over.

“Ricky” she couldn’t hide the glimmer in her eyes.

“I have liked you since god, homecoming, maybe before I don’t really know when this started” They swayed to no music just looking at each other, taking in each other's presence. Being with each other.

That’s all both of them wanted.

“Can I kiss you” Her nod was the last thing he saw before he locked lips, kissing her with such passion
He had seriously never felt like this before.

He swore the moon shone brighter

For them,

Just for them.
