It can be hard to keep track of things during a fight. They're riots of sound and movement already, and when you add in your crew's weird specialties - Sanji whose legs burn so bright you have to look away, Luffy with his strange contorting body. Sometimes it's all you can do to focus on the edge of your axe blade and keep your legs under you. And today? You haven't even managed that.
Your opponent has long arms and an even longer sword. You're not quite prepared for the reach it affords him and he's quicker than you would have liked too. Before you can block the slash, his blade is cutting deep into your thigh and you're crashing backwards into a heap as your leg gives way beneath you. Time seems to slow as he advances on you. You manage to get your axe above your head to block, but frankly you're wobbly and not confident you have enough leverage from down here to really do much.
"Y/N!" A cry comes from your right. Weird. You're not used to hearing your name in that voice.
Sanji flies through the air towards your assailant, foot connecting with the man's shoulder and knocking him off course. He skids several feet to your left where he meets a green blur that resolves itself into Zoro who runs him through, the unfortunate man's own momentum proving to be his doom. Did you just think of the man who nearly killed you as unfortunate? Maybe you're losing a lot of blood.
"Y/N, are you okay?" Despite the battle still raging around you both, Sanji has dropped to his knees beside you, hands running over you to take stock of your injuries. When he finds the gaping wound in your thigh, he presses down. It hurts.
"Mossy? Cover us, I need to get her out of here."
Zoro scoffs. "How about you cover us."
Before any further argument from Sanji, Zoro scoops you up, not seeming to mind that he's immediately covered in blood. Sanji may be scowling, but he does clear a path for you both, managing to catch Nami's attention long enough to point to you. Nami surveys your bloodied form and nods, turning back to the fight and redoubling her efforts to earn you some more space.
In the brief moment of relative calm, Sanji hurries after you and Zoro. He gets a less than warm welcome.
"I've got her. Go help the others." Zoro jerks his head back to indicate the fray.
"Are you crazy? I'm not leaving her like this!"
"Cook." Zoro levels him with his most serious stare. To those who don't know him, it's probably very intimidating. Mostly it just irritates Sanji. "The sooner the fight ends, the sooner you can all be back with her. Go help Nami."
Sanji looks anguished at the idea of picking between you and Nami, but he relents. "Okay, okay."
He pulls a crisp handkerchief from his breast pocket, somehow still perfectly white and folded despite the mess of battle. He presses it to your wound and Zoro automatically adjusts his hold on you so he can keep pressing the fabric firmly against your leg with one hand. "You be strong okay, Y/N? I'll see you soon."
He pressed a kiss to your brow very clumsily as neither he nor Zoro slow their stride.
"Y/N? I don't think you've ever called me Y/N before, Sanji." You muse idly. You think you see Sanji's brow furrow before you pass out.
-
Your leg is aching. It's the first thing you notice when you wake up. The second thing you notice is Sanji's long fingers wrapped around yours. You tilt your head towards him and the movement immediately pulls his attention from the recipe book he's awkwardly jotting notes in where it balances shakily across his knee. He abandons the pen and smiles at you softly.
"How are you feeling, sweetness?"
You smile too at the term of endearment. "Oh good. I thought you didn't like me anymore."
Sanji presses a hand to his heart, horrified. "Princess, why would you ever think that?"
"You called me Y/N. When Zoro was carrying me? You never call me just Y/N."
"I was panicked," Sanji wails in distress. "I thought you were dying!"
"Oh." You frown. "Would you not love me if I was dying?"
"My heart, I will love you until the end of time, no matter where you are or what state you may be in." Sanji presses a kiss to your knuckles and you relax back into the pillows.
-
The next time you wake up, Zoro is in the chair by the bed. He's sitting bolt upright. It's kind of strange to see him not drinking, training, or sleeping in his downtime.
"Zoro, you're awake. And sober."
"Yeah. For you." His expression is deadpan. The word 'idiot' is heavily implied. It's so touching you could almost tear up.
"Aww, were you worried about me?"
He shakes his head. "Nah."
Despite his claim, when Zoro takes your hand and squeezes it, you know he was concerned. Not that you had really doubted it. It's a tight knit crew you find yourselves in and even though Zoro pretends he's above such frivolous things as emotions you know he cares about every single one of you. You tug plaintively at his hand until he sighs dramatically and climbs out of the chair and onto your bed, struggling to squeeze in next to you. Trying to help, you make an attempt to wiggle over and immediately regret it when a wave of pain washes over you. Zoro tsks at you when you hiss through your teeth.
"Let me."
You still obediently and let him gently gather you up. He lifts you into a seated position, propped up against the pillows and slides under the covers. You sigh happily when he wraps his arm around you. Bliss.
-
Chopper's doctor voice wakes you up next.
"You two need to let her rest, she lost a lot of blood."
"We are letting her rest. She's asleep isn't she?" Comes Zoro's grumpy voice.
"No..." You mumble blearily. You finally open your eyes, blinking against the harsh light and the sudden attention of everyone in the room.
"Well now look what you've done!"
Zoro makes a face at Chopper in response.
Sanji swoops across the room to take your hand with one of his. "Oh, my angel, did we wake you? Please forgive me."
Unsurprisingly, his other hand is occupied with a plate of snacks, which he offers to you without even waiting to be officially forgiven. "Are you hungry? I made all your favourite things."
"Thanks babe." You look over to Chopper. "It's fine to eat, right?"
The doctor nods distractedly, flipping the covers back to take a look at your bandages. They're splotched with red.
"Hmm, you're bleeding again. Try not to move so much in your sleep, okay?"
"Okaaaay" you laugh, taking a cookie from Sanji's plate.
Too deep in doctor mode to even ask for sweets, Chopper gently unwraps the sullied bandage. Sanji looks near tears as he sees the wound. Even though it's your leg, you're a little more detached. It's not your first big injury and probably won't be your last. Zoro looks straight up interested.
"You'll have a cool scar."
You shake your head, almost rueful. "Nah. Legs scars are like the least cool."
"You don't think my leg scars are hot?"
It's the closest to pouting you've ever heard him and you wink over Chopper's head at him.
"Sure I do, but it's the face one that's really sexy."
"Stoooop." Chopper wails in disgust at your exaggerated flirting, pausing in his task of rewrapping your leg. "If you don't all let me work in peace, you're banned."
"I can't be banned, I'm the patient." You point out. He reaches into his medicine chest and wiggles a vial menacingly at you. Probably a sleeping draught. You stick your tongue out at him and then grab more snacks from Sanji's plate to keep yourself quiet. You throw a cookie Zoro's way too which he catches in his mouth. Show off.
-
The next time Chopper returns to check on you, you're resting at least. Sanji and Zoro have managed to squish themselves into the bed on either side of you but it's a tight fit, meaning you're well coccooned and entirely kept from rolling to either side. He tsks.
"At least that'll keep her stitches intact..."
