Work Text:
Kunigami, Isagi, Hiori and Rin had all left to scavenge for more food at sunrise, but now the sun was sinking below the horizon, and Chigiri’s heart sank with it.
“Stop worrying so much, Giri! You know Kunigami's strong, he’ll protect our group if they're in danger, and he’ll batter up some brainless zombies! Who knows, maybe the car ran out of gas and they just needed a little extra time to get back!” Reo rambled. His pep talk didn’t do much to ease the anxiety welling up in his chest, but his idealism gave Chigiri something to chuckle at.
“My monster said that Kunigami wouldn’t ditch Chigirin on such an important day,” Bachira added helpfully.
“What’s special about today?” Chigiri questioned the bumblebee.
Bachira laughed. “It’s almost me and Yocchan’s one month anniversary,” he said with a wink.
“Congrats?” Chigiri sighed, perpetually confused by what Bachira said. He opened his mouth to speak but got interrupted by the lazy genius himself bursting into the room.
“Reo left me,” Nagi grouched flatly. Reo laughed as the giant sloth draped himself over Reo’s back and planted ticklish neck kisses on the boy until his face was scarlet.
“Nagi! I said I was going to hang out with Chigiri, why are you so clingy?” Reo questioned, his hands flying up to stop Nagi’s wandering ones.
“It’s almost midnight,” Nagi pouted.
“WHAT?!” Chigiri exclaimed. Kunigami should definitely be back by midnight!
“Nagi, just because it’s getting dark doesn’t mean it’s midnight… And stop freaking out Giri!” Nagi nodded as Reo continued to reprimand him, but Chigiri could tell he was zoned out, looking awfully moonstruck as Reo finished his tirade and apologized to Chigiri on his partner's behalf.
The door creaked.
All their heads whipped around to find Isagi, Hiori and Rin stumbling through the door.
Chigiri’s heart stopped. “Ren-?”
Kunigami stumbled through the door last, a plastic bag clutched in his bloody grasp, his breath ragged, clothes torn, and body streaked with cuts and bruises. The door slammed shut behind him, a harsh boom! that echoed through the room.
Chigiri had never sprinted so fast in his life. "What happened to you guys? You look like you just crawled out of hell."
He tasked Bachira with getting the medical kit, apologizing in the back of his mind to the boy, who looked like he didn’t want to detach from Isagi, who now sported a shallow cut across his forehead. Head wounds bled a lot, but it looked minor, and Chigiri sure as hell wouldn't be separated from Kunigami for even just a moment.
Bachira returned swiftly and bandages were passed around, the bumble bee humming happily after wrapping Isagi’s head, and Isagi hadn’t let go of his waist all the while. The bumble bee flitted to the kitchen, fussing over the limited ingredients and making a dish he was satisfied with. Finally he proudly presented Isagi with a bowl of miso.
“Reocchan taught me how to cook. Well, not really because I blew up some katsu, but you can’t mess up miso!” Bachira explained.
Isagi chuckled and happily let Bachira feed him.
Hiori and Rin seemed fine, although Rin seemed particularly distressed about the stitches of Hiori’s old wound reopening at some point during their escapade but it had already clotted, no cause for alarm, but Rin still insisted on treating it. Hiori stroked his hair and smiled adoringly as Rin dutifully dabbed disinfectant on the area, inflamed because of how much Hiori had run that day but otherwise healing perfectly.
Seeing his friends settled, Chigiri turned to his boyfriend and asked sternly. "What happened?"
Kunigami winced as he gingerly lowered himself onto the living room couch. His gaze was a mixture of exhaustion and something softer— maybe embarrassment. "Just… had a rough day," he muttered, wincing as Chigiri began to dress his wounds with practiced efficiency.
Chigiri's eyes narrowed, the concern in them deepening. "‘Just had a rough day’? I've seen you take on a dozen zombies and come out with just a scratch. This?" He gestured at him, "looks like you fought an army. What happened?"
Kunigami’s eyes pleaded for him to back down but he stood his ground, Kunigami’s “reassuring” smile doing nothing to reassure him as he winced from the disinfectant. "I had to go deeper into the city than usual… and there were a lot more zombies there."
"Why would you do that? The store we scavenge from isn’t even remotely close to running low on any of our necessary items." Chigiri’s heart was going a mile a minute, his skin feeling too hot and like it was buzzing.
"I know," Kunigami admitted, his voice growing softer. He glanced at Chigiri, trying to meet his eyes but clearly struggling. "I have a reason, I swear."
Chigiri’s brow furrowed. "A reason? It better be a damn good reason, going into the city doesn’t just affect you, you put Isagi and Hiori and Rin at risk, you understand that, right?"
“We agreed to it,” Hiori interjected, taking mercy on Kunigami. “Rin thought that Sae would’ve been closer to the city and wanted to check it out.”
“Did you find Sae?” Chigiri asked.
“No,” Rin said, “but we did have signal, and I saw a bunch of texts from Sae I wasn’t receiving out here. He’s in Spain.”
Hiori wrapped Rin in a hug until his shoulders relaxed, to which he grumbled appreciatively.
Kunigami took a deep breath, looking up at Chigiri with a mix of resolve and vulnerability. "I went into the food market. I heard a store had a supply of karinto manjuu."
Chigiri froze, his hands pausing over the large bruise on Kunigami’s left shoulder. His face filled with shock and disbelief. "Are you telling me you risked your life… for karinto manjuu?"
Kunigami nodded, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. "Yeah, our anniversary was coming up, and I figured some of your favorite food could make it a little more special."
Chigiri let out a strained laugh, shaking his head in disbelief as he continued tending to Kunigami’s wounds with a more delicate touch. "An entire apocalypse isn’t special enough for you? Is getting yourself killed for a few sweets a romantic gesture?"
Kunigami winced as he carefully applied an antiseptic to a particularly deep gash. "I can’t let some zombies stop me from making some romantic effort. Besides, I’m alive, right?"
Chigiri's eyes softened, and he gently brushed a stray tuft of ginger from Kunigami’s forehead. "You are here, and I’m going to make sure you stay here with me. Or at least don’t make me worry so much." He pinched Kunigami's cheek in punishment, but he wasn't fazed.
"I’ll keep that in mind," Kunigami deadpanned. “Only one of us is allowed to give the other heart attacks.”
Chigiri gave his boyfriend a salacious wink. “You get it.”
“I am sorry for making you worry though,” Kunigami said, cradling Chigiri’s face as he discards all the messy bandages and sits next to him. “I just thought you might like a little of your favorite food and I just… wanted to be enough for you? Ugh, I don’t know, I feel like I haven’t given you enough, I mean, you’re my most precious person and I kept you waiting for so long… you deserve so much better than me.”
Chigiri’s fingers found their way under Kunigami’s chin, tipping his face to meet his gaze from where he had hung his head in shame.
“And yet, I still love you.” Chigiri placed a sweet kiss on his lips.
Kunigami laughed wetly. “Happy anniversary Hyoma.”
“Happy anniversary Rensuke,” Chigiri hummed. “I’m still mad you risked your life over this, but I’ll take that manjuu.”
“Of course princess.”
After settling comfortably on the couch, they ate the manjuu together, smiling and clinging to each other as Bachira came out of the kitchen, having finished feeding Isagi his miso.
“Whatcha got then Chigirin? It looks delicious,” Bachira exclaimed, bounding up to the pair.
“It’s not for you,” Chigiri said petulantly. “An idiot literally risked his life to get me this, so I’m not sharing!”
Bachira’s head tilts. “But you’re sharing it with Kunigami.”
Chigiri popped up his right eyebrow. “Yeah, the idiot who risked his life gets some of the share.”
Bachira’s hands went up in surrender. “I got it, my papa taught me to never take another mans food… Wait…”
Bachira paused dramatically, faux gasping. “Ah shucks, I don’t have a dad!”
With that he launched himself onto the couch, grappling with Chigiri for a piece and Kunigami did his best to settle them both down as Isagi’s exasperated “Megs!” came from behind, although he ultimately watched with an affectionate grin as Bachira went batshit crazy after successfully wrestling a piece into his mouth.
His eyes went wide. “It’s so sweet. Yocchan, come try one!”
Isagi chuckled, looping his arms around Bachira’s waist as the boy kept squirming. “I don’t want to be murdered tonight, neither of us can outrun Chigiri.”
“Damn right,” Chigiri said with a menacing glare.
Seconds later, Chigiri lept up and rammed Bachira’s stomach with a pillow, a soft “oomph!” escaping the boy before he grabbed another pillow and took a wild swing, but Chigiri managed to dodge it.
“Hah, you really think you can hit me? I’m too fast for you,” Chigiri taunted.
Bachira swung left, and as Chigiri moved to the right to avoid it-
“Ow!” Chigiri yelled.
Isagi, who had been observing, had grabbed a pillow of his own and predicted the panther’s movement, swinging only when Chigiri's momentum had already propelled him in a definite direction, nailing Chigiri’s head.
They exchanged blows, but one of them went astray, Isagi’s pillow wrenched from his grasp and flung into Kunigami's face.
“Why would you hit Kunigami? He’s literally injured!” Chigiri thundered.
Kunigami placed a calming hand on Chigiri’s shoulder. “It’s a pillow, it’s not going to actually hurt,” he placates.
He slowly reached for the couch, grabbing a pillow. “But I am going to kill you for that.”
“Woah guys, break it up!” Reo said as he rushed into the room.
“No can do chameleon,” Kunigami said with a shrug, hammering Isagi’s side. Reo grabbed a pillow to use as a shield, trying desperately to not get battered.
“Reo?” Nagi walked in lethargically, seeing the chaos and making his way to Reo, unintimidated.
“Nagi, get out of here while you still can!” Reo told him.
Nagi scoffed. “But Reo’s here.”
Grabbing Reo’s waist, Nagi sunk to the floor and curled around Reo, stuffing his face in Reo’s neck and wrapping his leg’s around Reo’s. Kunigami, Chigiri, Isagi and Bachira buried the couple in the pillows that rained down on them until neither were visible under the mountain of feathers and linen.
Hiori and Rin entered the room. “What’s all the fuss?” Hiori asked.
Kunigami, Isagi, Bachira, and Chigiri all grinned.
“PILLOW FIGHT!!!”
Four pillows flew towards Hiori and Rin caught one, giving the others a deadly glare. “I’m going to crush all of you, lukewarm pieces of shit.”

“I'll take it back,” Kunigami wheezed. “Pillows can hurt. Rin… you have one hell of an arm, have you even done baseball?”
“No, try not to be so lukewarm and put those muscles to use, I’m sure you can hit harder,” Rin grouched.
“Nah, my hero’s too nice to use his full strength,” Chigiri murmured.
“That’s not a bad thing,” Kunigami mused.
“There’s something about a man who could break you but touches you so carefully.” Chigiri sighed dreamily, pinching the ginger’s cheek as he went violently red.
Kunigami sighed wearily. “Only for you.”
Chigiri grinned. “Only for me… I hate to say it but this was a good anniversary.”
“Oh my god shut up.” Reo sniped.
They all laid on the floor, panting after hours of intense pillow fighting, and one by one, they all fell asleep.
