Work Text:
Alex Danvers had always been fiercely protective of her younger sister Kara. Growing up together, they had forged a bond that went far beyond the usual sibling relationship. Alex was the older, more responsible one, always watching out for Kara, especially since discovering that Kara wasn't just her little sister but also the last daughter of Krypton. Kara was Supergirl, the protector of National City, but to Alex, she was still the same wide-eyed girl who had arrived on Earth, lost and alone, all those years ago.
It had been a long day at the DEO, filled with the usual chaos of alien threats and government red tape. Alex was exhausted and ready for a quiet evening with a glass of wine and perhaps an episode or two of her favorite show. She decided to stop by Kara's apartment on the way home, hoping to unwind with her sister. Kara always had that effect on her—making even the most stressful days seem lighter.
As Alex approached Kara's apartment, she noticed the door was slightly ajar. A sense of unease prickled at the back of her mind. Kara was usually so careful about security, given her dual identity. Alex's protective instincts kicked in immediately. She approached the door cautiously, her hand hovering over her concealed weapon, just in case.
Just as she was about to push the door open further, she heard a voice. It was Lena Luthor, Kara’s best friend. The two of them had become inseparable over the past year, their friendship blossoming into something deeper, something that, at times, had made Alex wonder if there was more between them than just friendship. Alex had seen the way Kara looked at Lena when she thought no one was watching, and she had also noticed the way Lena's eyes softened whenever she spoke about Kara.
Alex leaned in closer to the door, trying to hear more clearly.
"Oh yes, please, more," Lena’s voice was breathy, tinged with desperation. "I am begging you, oh I love it, it's so good, yes, Kara."
Alex’s eyes widened, her face flushing red. She could hardly believe what she was hearing. Was Kara and Lena…? The thought was so unexpected that it took her a moment to process. Kara and Lena were close, yes, but were they *that* close? And if they were, why hadn’t Kara told her?
She felt a pang of guilt for eavesdropping but was too shocked to move. Her mind raced as she tried to reconcile the image of her sweet, innocent sister with the heated words she was hearing. The longer she listened, the more convinced she became that she had stumbled upon something intensely private. She felt a surge of embarrassment, realizing she had intruded on what was clearly an intimate moment between the two women.
Alex’s cheeks burned as she slowly backed away from the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She turned on her heel, ready to leave before she embarrassed herself further. She was blushing furiously by the time she reached the elevator, her mind spinning with confusion and a strange mixture of emotions she couldn’t quite name.
As she hurried out of the building, Alex tried to push the thoughts from her mind. This was Kara’s life, and if her sister hadn’t told her about her relationship with Lena, then maybe there was a reason. Perhaps Kara wasn’t ready to share that part of her life yet, and Alex resolved to respect her sister’s privacy, no matter how much it shocked her.
But as the elevator doors closed, sealing her away from Kara's apartment, a nagging doubt tugged at the back of her mind. What if she had misunderstood? What if something else entirely was happening in that apartment? Alex had to know the truth.
---
Back in Kara’s apartment, the scene inside was vastly different from what Alex had imagined.
Lena was sitting cross-legged on Kara's living room floor, a concentrated look on her face as she fiddled with a small gadget in her hands. Kara hovered nearby, her expression a mix of curiosity and amusement as she watched Lena work.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Kara asked, her voice filled with doubt but also a hint of hope.
Lena looked up at her with a confident smile. "Trust me, Kara. This is going to be amazing. I've been working on this design for weeks. I just need to adjust this one last piece… and… done!"
Lena held up the device triumphantly. It was a small, round object with a series of glowing lights around its edge. To the untrained eye, it looked like just another piece of advanced technology. But to Lena, it was something far more personal.
"Okay, moment of truth," Lena said, her voice trembling with excitement. She pressed a button on the side of the device, and immediately, the room was filled with a soft, soothing hum.
Kara’s eyes widened in awe as the lights in the room dimmed, and a beautiful array of colors began to dance across the walls and ceiling. It was like being inside a kaleidoscope, with the colors shifting and changing in time with the hum of the device.
"Oh my Rao, Lena!" Kara exclaimed, her voice filled with wonder. "This is incredible!"
Lena beamed with pride. "I knew you’d love it. It’s a portable light show. I designed it to help you relax after a long day. You can take it anywhere, and it’ll create a calming atmosphere wherever you are."
Kara moved closer to Lena, her eyes sparkling with gratitude. "You’re amazing, Lena. This is exactly what I needed."
Lena’s cheeks flushed slightly at the compliment, but she waved it off with a modest shrug. "It’s nothing, really. Just a little something to help you unwind. You’ve been so stressed lately with everything going on, and I wanted to do something to help."
Kara reached out and took Lena’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "It means a lot to me, Lena. Thank you."
For a moment, the two women just sat there, hand in hand, basking in the soft glow of the light show. The connection between them was palpable, but it was a connection born of deep friendship and mutual care, not the romantic entanglement that Alex had imagined.
Lena broke the silence first, her voice light and teasing. "So, do I get that back massage you promised me for fixing this?"
Kara laughed, the sound ringing out like a bell. "Of course! You’ve definitely earned it."
As Kara moved behind Lena to start the massage, the atmosphere in the room shifted from one of wonder to one of comfort and familiarity. Kara’s hands were gentle but firm as she worked out the tension in Lena’s shoulders, and Lena closed her eyes, letting out a contented sigh.
"Oh yes, please, more," Lena murmured, her voice low and relaxed. "I am begging you, oh I love it, it's so good, yes, Kara."
Kara chuckled softly at her friend’s words, her hands working their magic on the tight knots in Lena’s muscles. "I told you I’d make it worth your while."

Meanwhile, Alex was back in her car, sitting in the driver's seat and trying to calm her racing heart. She took a deep breath, feeling the blush still lingering on her cheeks. She couldn’t believe what she had just overheard. Or rather, what she *thought* she had overheard. The image of Kara and Lena together, doing something intimate, was still vivid in her mind, and no matter how hard she tried to shake it, it wouldn’t go away.
But as she sat there, staring out the windshield, a small voice in the back of her mind started to question her assumptions. Had she really heard what she thought she had? Or was she letting her imagination run wild?
Alex frowned, suddenly feeling unsure. She was a trained agent, used to assessing situations with a clear, logical mind. But when it came to Kara, her emotions often clouded her judgment. Maybe she had jumped to conclusions too quickly. Maybe there was a perfectly innocent explanation for what she had heard.
Alex shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. There was only one way to find out for sure. She had to go back and talk to Kara. She had to know the truth, no matter how awkward it might be.
With a resigned sigh, Alex started the car and drove back to Kara's apartment. She parked outside the building, took a deep breath to steady herself, and headed back upstairs. This time, she knocked on the door instead of sneaking in. She wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.
Kara answered the door almost immediately, a bright smile on her face when she saw her sister. "Alex! What are you doing here? Come in!"
Alex hesitated for a moment, glancing past Kara into the apartment. She could see Lena lounging on the couch, looking relaxed and content. There was no sign of anything inappropriate or embarrassing. In fact, the whole scene looked perfectly normal.
Kara noticed her sister’s hesitation and frowned slightly. "Is everything okay?"
Alex forced a smile and stepped inside. "Yeah, everything’s fine. I just… I just wanted to check on you. See how you were doing."
Kara’s expression softened, and she reached out to give Alex a quick hug. "That’s sweet of you. I’m fine, really. Lena just came over to help me with something."
Lena gave Alex a friendly wave from the couch. "Hey, Alex. How’s it going?"
"Hey, Lena," Alex replied, still feeling a bit awkward but trying to play it cool. "I’m good. Just had a long day at work."
Kara led Alex over to the couch and gestured for her to sit down. "You want to stay for a bit? We were just about to order some takeout. You could join us."
Alex hesitated, still feeling a bit flustered from her earlier assumptions, but she quickly masked it with a nod. "Sure, that sounds nice," she said, sitting down. "What are you thinking of ordering?"
Lena grinned. "We were debating between Thai and Indian. Kara can never make up her mind, so we’re stuck in a perpetual loop of indecision."
Kara laughed and gave Lena a playful nudge. "Hey! I like them both. It’s a tough choice!"
"Well, I’m here to break the tie," Alex interjected, hoping to steer the conversation into more neutral territory. "I vote for Thai."
"Perfect!" Lena said, pulling out her phone to place the order. "That settles it."
As Lena busied herself with the order, Kara turned her attention back to Alex. "So, what brings you by, really? You look… I don’t know, a little flushed. Did something happen?"
Alex felt her cheeks redden again, the memory of what she’d heard still fresh in her mind. She didn’t know how to approach the subject without making things incredibly awkward. She glanced over at Lena, who was still distracted with the takeout app, and then back at Kara.
"Um, actually," Alex began, lowering her voice slightly, "I came by earlier… and I might have overheard… something."
Kara’s brow furrowed in confusion. "Something? What do you mean?"
Alex took a deep breath, feeling her face heat up even more. "I thought I heard… you know, something… personal between you and Lena."
Kara blinked, clearly puzzled. "Personal? Like what?"
Alex hesitated, not sure how to put it delicately. "I heard Lena saying things like, ‘Oh yes, please, more’ and ‘I’m begging you.’ And, well… I thought… I mean, it sounded like you two were… you know."
Kara’s eyes widened in surprise, and then, to Alex's relief, a look of understanding crossed her face, followed by a burst of laughter. "Oh, Rao, Alex! No, no, no, it’s not what you think!"
Lena, who had just finished ordering, looked up at the sound of Kara’s laughter. "What’s so funny?"
Kara wiped a tear from her eye as she tried to control her laughter. "Alex thought we were… doing something… intimate because she overheard you saying those things."
Lena’s eyes widened for a moment, and then she, too, burst out laughing. "Oh, no! Alex, you’ve got it all wrong!"
Alex felt her embarrassment double. "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to jump to conclusions, it’s just… the way it sounded…"
Kara took a deep breath, still chuckling. "We were just trying out Lena's new invention—a portable light show," she explained, pointing to the small device on the coffee table. "Lena was just really enjoying the back massage I was giving her as a thank you for fixing it."
Lena nodded, her smile still wide. "Yeah, I was having some serious neck tension, and Kara has surprisingly good massage skills. I guess I got a bit… vocal."
Alex felt a wave of relief wash over her, but it was quickly followed by a sheepish grin. "Okay, that makes a lot more sense. Sorry, I guess my imagination got the better of me."
Kara grinned. "You think? What did you imagine, exactly?"
Alex shook her head quickly, holding up a hand. "Nope, we’re not going there. It was just… a misunderstanding."
Lena, still laughing softly, gave Alex a reassuring smile. "It’s okay, Alex. I guess it’s a compliment that you think so highly of our… compatibility?"
Alex groaned, feeling her cheeks heat up again. "Okay, okay, can we just move on from this? Please?"
Kara wrapped an arm around Alex’s shoulders, pulling her in for a side hug. "Of course, we can. But you know, if you ever need to know about my love life, you can always just ask."
Alex chuckled. "I’ll keep that in mind. But next time, maybe lock your door or put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign or something. Save me from another heart attack."
Lena winked at Alex, clearly enjoying the teasing. "Deal. We’ll be sure to do that."
---
As the conversation drifted back to lighter topics, the food arrived, and the three women settled in, enjoying each other’s company. They talked about work, friends, and the latest bizarre alien happenings in National City. The earlier awkwardness melted away, replaced by the easy camaraderie that had always existed between them.
Eventually, as the night wore on, Alex found herself feeling more relaxed. She was glad she had decided to come back and clear the air, even if it had been embarrassing. She realized how important Lena had become not just to Kara, but to her as well. Lena had become part of their little family, and Alex was grateful for it.
At one point, Kara went to the kitchen to grab more napkins, leaving Alex and Lena alone for a moment. Lena leaned over, her expression suddenly more serious.
"Hey, Alex," she said softly, "I know you worry about Kara a lot. I just want you to know… I care about her, too. A lot. I’d never do anything to hurt her."
Alex looked at Lena, sensing the sincerity in her words. She gave a small nod, her voice gentle. "I know, Lena. I see that. And I’m glad she has you. You’re good for her."
Lena smiled, a bit of relief in her eyes. "Thanks, Alex. That means a lot."
Kara returned, oblivious to the quiet exchange, and they continued their conversation, the night slipping away in laughter and warmth. For the first time in a long time, Alex felt completely at ease, surrounded by the people she loved most.
As the evening wound down, Alex said her goodbyes and left Kara’s apartment, feeling a sense of peace she hadn’t felt in weeks. She glanced back at the door, smiling to herself as she imagined Kara and Lena probably still teasing each other over what had happened earlier.
Alex chuckled softly as she walked to her car. Maybe things weren't as complicated as she often made them out to be. Sometimes, things were just... normal. And that was perfectly okay.
The morning sun had barely begun to rise over National City, casting long shadows across the streets below, when Lena Luthor found herself pacing the floor of her penthouse apartment. She had barely slept, her mind racing with thoughts of the previous evening. The conversation with Alex had gone well—better than she had expected—but there was still a lingering sense of urgency gnawing at her.
She had seen the look in Alex’s eyes, the protectiveness, and the love she felt for Kara. And Lena knew that if there was ever going to be a chance for her to move forward with her feelings, she needed Alex to be on her side. She needed to talk to Alex again, alone, without the warmth and laughter of the evening masking the serious undertones of her thoughts.
Lena sighed deeply, her hand clutching her phone as she debated calling Alex. She wasn’t sure how Alex would react, especially after the misunderstanding last night. But she also knew that she couldn’t put this off any longer. If she didn’t talk to Alex soon, she might lose her nerve altogether, and that wasn’t an option.
Steeling herself, Lena tapped Alex’s contact and pressed the call button. The phone rang once… twice… three times. Lena’s heart pounded in her chest. She almost hung up, afraid that Alex wouldn’t want to hear from her so soon. But then, Alex’s familiar voice came through, a little groggy but still alert.
“Hey, Lena,” Alex said, yawning slightly. “What’s up? It’s kind of early…”
Lena swallowed hard, trying to keep her voice steady. “Hey, Alex. I’m sorry to call so early, but I was wondering if we could talk… in person. I, um, I have something I really need to say. Something important.”
There was a pause on the other end, and Lena could almost hear Alex’s mind whirring, trying to figure out what this could be about. Finally, Alex spoke again, her tone more curious than concerned.
“Sure, Lena. Is everything okay?”
“Yes, everything is fine,” Lena replied quickly. “I just… I think it’s better if we talk face-to-face. Maybe at your place? I could be there in twenty minutes.”
Alex hesitated for a moment, but then agreed. “Okay. Come on over. I’ll put on some coffee.”
“Thanks, Alex. I appreciate it,” Lena said softly before hanging up.
As she slipped into a pair of jeans and a casual sweater, Lena couldn’t help but feel a rush of nervous energy. This was it. She was finally going to tell Alex how she felt about Kara. She wasn’t sure what to expect—anger, disappointment, maybe even a bit of skepticism—but she knew she had to do it. She had to tell Alex the truth, because Alex was the person Kara cared about most, and she was the gatekeeper to Kara’s heart in so many ways.
---
Twenty minutes later, Lena found herself standing outside Alex’s apartment door, her heart racing in her chest. She could hear the faint sounds of movement inside, and she took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. With a firm knock, she waited, hoping she wouldn’t lose her resolve now that she was here.
The door opened, revealing Alex in a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie, her hair slightly tousled from sleep. She smiled warmly, though there was a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
“Hey, Lena,” Alex greeted, stepping aside to let her in. “Come on in. Coffee’s just about ready.”
Lena nodded, stepping into the cozy apartment. She’d been here a few times before, but today it felt different—more intimate, somehow. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air, mingling with the faint scent of Alex’s floral shampoo. Lena took a moment to steady herself, inhaling deeply before turning to face Alex.
“Thanks for seeing me on such short notice,” Lena began, her voice steady but her hands fidgeting slightly. “I know it’s early, and I really appreciate it.”
Alex waved it off, pouring two mugs of coffee and handing one to Lena. “No worries. I was up anyway. And it sounded like something was on your mind.”
Lena took the mug gratefully, wrapping her hands around it as if drawing strength from the warmth. She nodded, taking a deep breath before diving in.
“Alex, I… I wanted to talk to you about Kara,” Lena started, her voice soft but determined. “About… how I feel about her.”
Alex’s eyebrows lifted slightly, but she didn’t interrupt. She took a seat on the couch, gesturing for Lena to sit beside her. “Go on,” she encouraged, her tone gentle but curious.
Lena sat down, her heart pounding in her chest. “I’ve been… struggling with my feelings for a while now,” she admitted. “Ever since Kara and I became close friends, I’ve felt this connection between us. It’s more than just friendship, Alex. I… I’m in love with her.”
Alex’s expression didn’t change, but Lena could see a flicker of something in her eyes—a mix of surprise, curiosity, and maybe even concern. She stayed quiet, letting Lena continue.
“I know how much Kara means to you,” Lena said, her voice earnest. “And I know you’re protective of her, that you only want what’s best for her. And I want you to know that I would never do anything to hurt her. She’s… she’s everything to me, Alex. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”
Alex remained silent, her gaze steady, studying Lena as if trying to gauge her sincerity. Lena felt a rush of anxiety, wondering if she was making a mistake, if she was overstepping some invisible line. But she pressed on.
“I wanted to tell you because… because I respect you, Alex,” Lena continued, her voice growing softer. “And because I know that if I want any chance with Kara, I need to be honest with you first. You’re the person she cares about most in this world, and I don’t want to come between that. I want to be a part of your family, not disrupt it.”
Alex took a slow sip of her coffee, her face thoughtful. Finally, she set the mug down and leaned back, crossing her arms as she studied Lena.
“You’re serious about this, aren’t you?” Alex asked, her tone more contemplative than accusatory.
Lena nodded, her green eyes earnest. “I am. I’m very serious.”
Alex sighed, rubbing her forehead with her hand. “You know, Lena, Kara has been through a lot. She’s had her heart broken more times than I care to remember, and every time, it’s like a punch to the gut for me, too. So yeah, I’m protective of her. Maybe too much sometimes.”
Lena’s expression softened. “I understand, Alex. I do. And I wouldn’t blame you for wanting to protect her. But… I care about her just as much. I would never do anything to hurt her, intentionally or otherwise.”
Alex nodded slowly, her gaze still fixed on Lena, as if searching for any sign of deception. “I believe you, Lena,” she said finally. “I’ve seen the way you look at her. I’ve seen the way you’re there for her, no matter what. And honestly, you make her happy. Happier than I’ve seen her in a long time.”
Lena felt a wave of relief wash over her, but she remained cautious, knowing there was more to this conversation than just Alex’s approval. “But?” she prompted gently, sensing there was more on Alex’s mind.
Alex sighed again, leaning forward, her hands clasped in front of her. “But Kara’s… she’s complicated. Her life is complicated. She’s juggling a lot—being Supergirl, being a reporter, trying to live a normal life. It’s not easy. And being in love with her… it’s not going to be easy, either.”
Lena nodded, her expression serious. “I know that, Alex. And I’m not afraid of the challenges. I’m not afraid of the danger, or the secrets, or the sacrifices. I’ve faced plenty of challenges in my life. But Kara… she’s worth it. She’s worth all of it.”
Alex stared at Lena for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Finally, she leaned back, letting out a long breath. “Okay, Lena. I hear you. And I appreciate your honesty. I just… I want to make sure you’re ready for what you’re getting into. Because loving Kara Danvers means loving all of her, including the parts that are messy and complicated and sometimes really hard to understand.”
Lena nodded, her gaze unwavering. “I’m ready, Alex. I’m ready for all of it. I just needed you to know that.”
Alex was silent for a moment, processing Lena’s words. Then she smiled slightly, a hint of warmth in her eyes. “You know, Kara talks about you all the time. You’re already such a big part of her life. I guess I just needed to know that you’re serious… and that you’re willing to stick around, no matter what.”
Lena felt her heart swell with hope. “I am, Alex. I promise.”
Alex nodded slowly, her expression softening. “Okay. Then… I guess I should say welcome to the family, officially.”
Lena couldn’t help but smile, a genuine, relieved smile that reached her eyes. “Thank you, Alex. That means a lot. More than you know.”
Alex grinned, the tension easing from her shoulders. “Just… one thing, Lena,” Alex continued, her voice lowering into a serious tone, though her smile remained. “If you hurt her, if you make her cry… you won’t have to worry about aliens, Lex, or any of Kara’s enemies coming after you. You’ll have to worry about me.”
Lena chuckled nervously, but there was a glimmer of understanding in her eyes. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from her big sister,” she replied, meeting Alex’s gaze directly. “I give you my word, Alex. I’ll do everything I can to make her happy. And if I ever fail at that… well, I’ll come to you first, before you have to come looking for me.”
Alex’s face softened, and she chuckled, finally breaking the tension. “Deal,” she said. “But really, Lena… I trust you. Just be honest with her. That’s all Kara really wants, you know?”
Lena nodded, feeling the weight of Alex’s words. “I know. Honesty… that’s something I’ve been learning to embrace more. Kara’s taught me that.”
“Good,” Alex replied. She took a sip of her coffee, seeming to relax further. “So… have you told Kara how you feel yet?”
Lena shook her head, her nerves returning at the thought of that conversation. “No, not yet. I wanted to talk to you first. Make sure I had your blessing—or at least your understanding—before I went to her. I didn’t want to put her in an awkward position.”
Alex nodded appreciatively. “That’s… that’s thoughtful of you, Lena. But you should tell her. Kara’s not the type to just wait around forever. And… well, you know how she feels about people being honest with her.”
Lena smiled, a little nervously. “I do. And I’m going to tell her. I promise. I just… I needed to be sure I wasn’t stepping on anyone’s toes first.”
Alex reached out and gave Lena’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “You’re not, Lena. And for what it’s worth, I think Kara would be lucky to have you in her life in that way. You’ve been there for her in ways that even I haven’t been able to. And that means a lot to me.”
Lena’s heart warmed at Alex’s words. “Thank you, Alex. That… that means more than you know. I’ve been so worried that… well, that I wouldn’t be good enough for her. That I wouldn’t fit into her world.”
Alex chuckled softly. “Lena, you’re already in her world. You’re part of it, whether you realize it or not. And trust me, she wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Lena’s smile grew wider, her nerves settling into a calm resolve. “Okay, then. I’ll tell her. Today, if I can.”
Alex grinned. “Good. And, Lena?”
“Yes?”
Alex’s expression turned playful. “Just try not to freak her out too much, okay? She’s been through enough surprises lately.”
Lena laughed, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. “I’ll do my best.”
---
Later that afternoon, Lena found herself standing outside the CatCo Worldwide Media building, her heart pounding as she stared up at the imposing structure. She had texted Kara earlier, asking if they could meet for lunch, and Kara had eagerly agreed, suggesting a little café nearby that they both loved.
Lena felt a mix of excitement and anxiety swirling in her stomach. She had rehearsed what she was going to say over and over again in her head, but now, standing here, she felt all of those carefully prepared words slipping away.
Taking a deep breath, Lena pushed open the glass doors and stepped into the bustling lobby. She could see Kara waiting near the entrance, a bright smile on her face as she spotted Lena.
“Hey!” Kara called out, waving her over. “I’m so glad you could make it!”
Lena’s heart fluttered at the sight of Kara’s smile, her nerves momentarily forgotten. She walked over, trying to steady her racing heart. “Of course. I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” she replied warmly.
Kara grinned and led the way out of the building, her energy as bright as ever. “So, what’s up? You sounded a bit… serious in your text earlier. Is everything okay?”
Lena swallowed, nodding. “Yes, everything’s fine. I just… I wanted to talk to you about something. Something important.”
Kara’s brow furrowed slightly, but she nodded, her expression attentive. “Okay, sure. Let’s grab a table first, and you can tell me all about it.”
They made their way to the café, settling into a quiet corner booth. The waitress came by to take their orders, and once she left, Kara turned back to Lena, her eyes filled with concern and curiosity.
“So,” Kara began, her voice gentle. “What’s going on, Lena? You look… a bit nervous.”
Lena took a deep breath, trying to steady her hands. “I am nervous,” she admitted with a small laugh. “But it’s not a bad kind of nervous. It’s… I just have something I need to tell you. Something I’ve been wanting to say for a while.”
Kara tilted her head slightly, her eyes softening with concern. “You can tell me anything, Lena. You know that, right?”
Lena nodded, feeling her heart swell with affection. “I know. And that’s why I need to say this… because I trust you. And because I care about you so much, Kara. More than I’ve ever cared about anyone.”
Kara’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of something—hope, maybe—dancing across her features. “Lena… what are you saying?”
Lena took a deep breath, feeling the words finally come to her, clear and true. “Kara, I… I’m in love with you,” she said, her voice steady, her eyes never leaving Kara’s. “I have been for a while now. And I’ve been so scared to say it, to risk losing what we have… but I can’t keep it inside anymore. I had to tell you.”
Kara’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening further. For a moment, she seemed frozen, as if trying to process Lena’s words. Then, slowly, a smile spread across her face, bright and beautiful.
“Lena… you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to hear that,” Kara whispered, her voice filled with wonder.
Lena’s heart soared, her anxiety melting away in an instant. “Really?” she asked, her voice trembling with emotion.
Kara nodded, reaching across the table to take Lena’s hands in hers. “Really. I’ve been in love with you, too. I just… I didn’t know if you felt the same way. And I was scared to ruin our friendship by saying anything.”
Lena laughed, a joyful, relieved sound. “Kara, you could never ruin anything between us. You mean everything to me.”
Kara’s smile grew even wider, her eyes shining with happiness. “And you mean everything to me, too, Lena.”
For a moment, they just sat there, holding each other’s hands, basking in the warmth and joy of their mutual confession. Lena felt like her heart might burst from happiness, and she could see that same joy mirrored in Kara’s eyes.
“I talked to Alex this morning,” Lena confessed softly. “I wanted to make sure she was okay with this… with us. She gave me her blessing, sort of.”
Kara laughed. “Sort of?”
Lena grinned. “Well, she said she’d come after me if I hurt you. But she trusts me… and she wants you to be happy.”
Kara’s smile softened, her eyes filled with gratitude. “That sounds like Alex. She loves you, you know. In her own way.”
Lena nodded. “I know. And I love her, too. I love all of you, Kara. I want to be a part of your world, in every way.”
Kara’s heart felt like it was soaring. She squeezed Lena’s hands tightly. “You already are, Lena. You always have been.”
They sat there for a long moment, just gazing at each other, feeling the weight of their words settle around them like a warm embrace. Lena felt a sense of peace wash over her, a peace she hadn’t felt in years. She was exactly where she was meant to be, with exactly the person she was meant to be with.
Finally, Kara leaned in, her voice soft but full of excitement. “So… what now?”
Lena chuckled. “I guess we take things one step at a time. Figure it out together. I’m not going anywhere, Kara. Not now, not ever.”
Kara’s smile was so bright it could have lit up the entire café. “Good,” she whispered, leaning closer, “because I don’t want you to.”
And with that, they sealed their confessions with a tender kiss, the world around them falling away as they finally embraced the love that had been there all along.
