[Filk] This Time

Summary:

Akk marvels at how Aye refused to give up on him in spite of everything he's done.

A filk based on No! by Bukahara (which is an excellent anti-fascist anthem, so if you don't know it, please listen to it too!)

Work Text:

Under pressure I was bent
Until I became a curse
And I was chanting their chant of honor at the flame
But deep down I was ashamed
I served their will to take our voice
And I thought I didn’t have a choice
But then he came and saw me standing on the brink
And he wouldn't let me sink

He said, “No!” to their oppressive rules
That were all I’d known
He said, “No!” to how I bore it all alone
He said, “No!” to my facade of strength
When I was afraid
He said, “No!” and helped me bear the weight

He took the lighter from my hand
And then he firmly made me understand
And to my horror I saw my hands were tainted red
And I couldn’t stop the spread
‘Cause when I stopped another one cropped
Up like they were attempting to see it through
So I broke down and wished that I could disappear
‘Cause I didn’t know what to do

But he said, “No!” to every thought like that
‘Cause there's folks who care
He said, “No!”, no matter what, he'd still be there
He said, “No!”, ‘cause of the one he’d lost
Who’s made him so afraid
He said, “No! This time it’s not too late!”

La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la la-la la la
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la la-ah
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la la-la la la
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la la-ah-ah-ah

We’ll say, “No!” to their outdated rules
That have caused us pain
We’ll say, “No!” to all the chanting and the flames
We’ll say, “No!” for everyone at school
Who I’ve made afraid
I’ll say, “No!” for those I have betrayed

(Slowly)
I’ll say, “No!” for everyone at school
Who’s had to be afraid
I’ll say, “No!” and hope it’s not too late

Notes:

Content warnings: The filk includes a reference to past loss of a loved one to suicide, and also vague passive suicidal ideation from the POV character. And some related language that is metaphorical but might hit different for this fandom.

So, "No!" is a very uplifting anti-fascist anthem, and this is... not quite that. The song came to mind, originally, because of the first person account it starts with, which reminded me of the filk before me in the chain, Say Goodbye by minnapod. That filk also reminded me of Akk with the helplessness and self-loathing, and how there is someone who loves him in spite of everything, so that's how I picked my topic and music! The Eclipse is a very political anti-fascist series, so the song kind of fit, but also it kind of didn't, because The Eclipse is not very uplifting. It doesn't really focus on the people who fight. It focuses on those who cave under the pressure to uphold the system that they themselves don't fit in. Akk has good reasons to be ashamed, but Aye's view is that every person matters. And that's a much smaller kind of uplifting, more like helping you crawl out of a hole in the ground than helping you fly, but for someone in Akk's position, it's a lot.
