Summary:

"What's with the sigh, kid?" Bobby asked. "Bad day?"

Notes:

For No True Pair Eight Character Challenge 2024

Prompt - September Two - Bobby Finstock & Stiles Stilinski - distant memory

I'm putting this in the "Coach" universe -- the series is linked above

Also for Sweet and Short September 2024 prompt - funeral

Work Text:

Stiles dropped down next to Bobby and sighed.

"What's with the sigh, kid?" Bobby asked. "Bad day?"

"Just... mom died this week," Stiles said. "Well, you know what I mean."

The anniversary of Claudia's death explained why both Stiles and John had been quieter than usual.

"And now that we know her death was... deliberate, that makes it harder," Stiles went on.

Fluffy came over and dropped his head on Stiles' lap, offering comfort.

"I think what's hardest is that... she's become something of a distant memory," Stiles said softly. "Like, I remember 'mom' but her voice and her face... most of what I remember is from pictures." Stiles absently scratched Fluffy behind the ears. "I remember her funeral more than I remember her."

Bobby nodded. "That's likely true for a lot of people, you know," Bobby said. Stiles looked up in surprise. "The funeral was a one-time-event with people and things that you've not done since. A unique event that sticks with you. But your mom making breakfast is a blur since it happened so often. And you were a kid, so your memories of that time are less formed."

"So I'm not crazy?" Stiles grinned.

"Nah. At least about this," Bobby said. "You're disgustingly normal."

Stiles snorted. "Glad to be normal about one thing," he admitted.

"So. Tell me about your mom," Bobby said. "That will spruce up those memories."
