I visited the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention in 2018 and had the most mind boggling immersive experience in all things Trek. Along with this event in over-the-top and gaudy Las Vegas (which I loved), I was struck by the vastness of the American Southwest, of the vast valleys, mountains as constant sentinels, the Grand Canyon and the Mojave Desert. I come from a home town set amongst lush rainforest in the mountains of subtropical Australia and deserts have always fascinated me, especially the illusion of barrenness and the dry heat.
