Work Text:
Kagome's heart pounded against her ribcage as she weaved through the halls of her high school. Her stomach had been filled with butterflies since last week when her childhood best friend crossed that invisible line and asked her out. It was the age-old tale of 'should-we, shouldn't-we' and not wanting to ruin what they already had. But her mother had always taught her to have courage, take a leap of faith, and what was meant to be would find a way.
Still, that did little to settle her nerves when he popped the question, and all her fumbling brain could come up with was, "I need to think about it."
Seriously?
How much more idiotic could she sound?
He had seemed confused, but nodded his head, watching as she scurried off.
They had a long weekend, so she had ample opportunity to avoid him like the plague while she wrapped her mind and heart around the idea. He had called her house a few times, yet her mother knew better, and staved him off.
But when Monday rolled around, Kagome knew her time for dodging his question was over. She had to face him one way or another.
Making her way toward class, she kept her eyes peeled for the set of silver dog ears that stood out amongst the crowd. Sure enough, Inuyasha leaned against the wall next to her home room waiting for her.
When he spotted her, she felt her cheeks warm with a blush. "Kagome, look-" he began his greeting, stepping toward her, an apology already perched on the tip of his tongue.
"Good morning, Inuyasha," she interrupted him. "Do you like my hoodie?"
His words died in his throat as his amber eyes skimmed over the familiar red sweatshirt that was far too big on her. "Yeahhh," he drawled, brows furrowed, obviously recognizing it as one of his that he had left at her house at one point.
"Thanks," Kagome chirped with a smile. "It's my boyfriend's."
It took about half of a second for him to process her words, and then a wide grin stretched across his face. He dropped his school bag on the ground and enveloped her in a hug. He picked her up and spun her around, eliciting an exuberant laugh that filled the corridor.
Kagome's mother was right. The future was uncertain, but what was meant to be would be.
All Kagome knew in that moment was that Inuyasha wasn't getting his hoodie back.
