Pedal to the Metal

Summary:

Mira meets her shiny bug hero senior.

Notes:

Look I know it's angsty time right now but here me out.

Takes place in the nebulous zone of the early teens on the Boonboomger side, like maybe between 14 and 15. On the B-Fighter side it's nearly been 30 years (happy almost anni woop woop).

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“So that’s what the tire people look like up close!”

This stylish woman, despite nearly getting caught by one of the giant nets that the Automonster flung around, seemed to only focus on getting a good look at the action around her. Mira respected the enthusiasm, because yeah, everyone was super cool when it came to fighting together. Even against the more ridiculous looking monsters like this that looked like if one of those Kamen Rider people with how largely compact the eyes were but also overall just shinier like a statue, her and her teammates fighting together was never not cool.

The Automonster buzzed as it swung toward more people. When Mira arrived here on her bike on route to deliver something close by, there were already a lot that got their entire body wrapped up in them like cocoons.

The woman had been crouching near one of them trying to tear it open.

“Hey, are you okay?” Mira said.

“Yes,” the woman sighed. She shook her head at the person in the cocoon before rising to face Mira, “but looks like whatever this material is is way different than a simple net I can cut.”

“Don’t worry, we’ll get your, er-”

The woman began running off as she yelled, “Old friend!”

“-old friend back uncoocoon’d!” Mira yelled back, pointing toward her teammates as they trickled in and transformed.

The woman stopped to watch. It was like watching a relative getting misty eyed seeing something that reminded them of a moment they were in the front seat of once upon a time.

“Aren’t you going to join them?” the woman asked.

Oh, right, there’s a fight to fight!

Mira raised her changer. “Mhm!”

“Then I’ll keep doing what I can hear, kiddo.”

“Kiddo?”

“Sorry, just always find it funny to say when meeting the new heroes on the block.”

“Wait, you used to-”

Another blast of net zoomed dangerously close to both of them. Before Mira could so much as lift a finger to try and wing a miraculous escape, she was pushed out of the way and onto the ground.

The woman wasn’t too far from where she landed, but now she’s stuck in that cocoon-y net thing too. As she laid  here on the hard concrete while the Automonster’s cackles and screams from civilians being pursued filled the air, it almost nudged her in the direction of dwelling on what she hadn’t been able to do.

"Catch me if you can!" the Automonster yelled as it darted into the lobby of one of the skyscrapers.

The slight burning from scrapes aside though, she had another destination to get to.

"Boonboom Change!"

By the time the Automonster died the second time, it was nearly sunset. The skyscrapers sort of blocked a lot of the view, but in parts the sky got reflected in the windows in a way that's less moodily imposing.

The woman from earlier and some man rushed over to the team.

“See, Takuya? These are the tire people! We almost never catch other teams like this!”

“And you two are?” Chasshiro asked..

“I’m Takatori Mai. Lately I've been travelling around the world, but a long time ago I used to be Reddle."

"And I'm Kai Takuya from Cosmo Academia's New York branch, though I used to be Blue Beet," he said, bowing.

Everyone went around introducing themselves.

“Alright, here’s your delivery then Mr. Kai."

Mira held out the package, that somehow even after everything looked more pristine than some of the packages she’d received recently. Then again, she had no idea what sort of stories those packages or the delivery people transporting them had to go through.

Takuya took the package and looked between all of them. “Thank you all. If I knew that you were those new heroes though, I would have at least tried compensating better.”

“What you gave us was fine enough,” said Taiya.

“Exactly! All that matters is that everyone’s safe,” Jou added.

“Oh yeah,” Mira said, turning to Mai. “Thanks a lot for saving me from getting netted back there!”

“Of course,” said Mai. “That’s just the first thing I jump to doing even after all this time and getting shoved into hero retirement.”

While Mira did join in on laughing with Mai about it. She couldn’t help but ask, “wait, if you still want to help people then what’s stopping you from going the whole way and transforming again?”

“To make a very long story short, we lost the power to."

“Urg, that sucks!”

“Like I said, there’s still a lot I can do when I want to. A really cool friend taught me that. All she mostly had was some armour she put on and a gun."

“All alone?” Jou asked.

“She’s in a team too.”

“And they're all very tough as nails.” Takuya said, glancing down at his watch. “But anyway, as much as I’d like to chat, we should get going.”

“I’m sure Daisaku and the others won’t mind if we’re a bit late."

“I’d rather not make things more complicated with this package than they already got.”

“What’s even in there anyway? Don’t tell me this reunion’s actually work related too.”

“Not exactly,” Takuya said as he began walking away. “You’ll see when we get there.”

“Alright, see you tire people! Keep it rolling out there!

Mira still had so many questions to ask as the two groups went their separate ways. Chasshiro probably ran off of less info to trackdown people and their backgrounds before, right? There’s no way he’d actually do that unless it was a super life or death situation though, and obviously the only way to get info about people is through the people themselves!

Hopefully she’d cross paths with whoever these heroes were again soon, maybe over curry.

Huh, actually a giant meet-up where they all got to talk more with hero seniors over boonboom curry sounded too fun not to try and convince the others about doing one day!

Notes:

I've been wanting to write this for so long. Even if it's super simple, I just think Mira meeting all kinds of toku people is lovely to see. Also Mai is awesome too so I had to get them to meet somehow.

Speculating on where the first gen B-Fighters are this far off in the future's fun too. They don't get to meet up with other heroes much due to their lives not really giving too many chances for it, but I'd like to think they all try to be super kind and patient with their juniors.

If I weren't so slow when it came to watching toku, I'd try writing out more of the obvious picks for crossovers with the tire people too but ehhhhh that day'll come eventually.
