Die With a Smile

Summary:

Bruno Mars made a comeback and I decided I’m going to throw all my favourites into an apocalypse. Yes, the world is ending guys.

Okay, down to business~

"If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you
If the party was over and our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile"

Notes:

I actually don't know how I've loved Kaiju no. 8 so long before the anime aired and I've never written about it.

Chapter 1: Hoshina Soshiro

Chapter Text

Hoshina Soshiro

The JAKDF had been decimated to only having numbers in the double digits. The once great resistance against the Kaiju that Soshiro’s family had dedicated itself to for generations was no more. There was no point in fighting anymore if the age of humanity was coming to an end very, very shortly. And so, as Soshiro sheathed his beloved blades that had become an extension of him over the years one last time, he was relieved.

No more fighting, no more making his wife cry when he came home from a mission badly injured and she had to patch him up. He really loved her for that. She wasn’t a fan of violence but she stood with him through it all.

“And that’s why I’m a doctor. To fix things up when silly guys like you get in a scuffle” she often said to him with a kiss to his cheek after every teasing insult.

Soshiro smiled at the memories while he walked home.

“Honey, I’m home!” Soshiro hollered cheerily. The world was ending but he wasn’t going to be sad because he’d die knowing he was with his love right to the end.

“Soshiro…? You’re okay!” she exclaimed and wrapped him up in a hug with strength someone so gentle had no business possessing. “Love, did you hear? The Defence Force… the Kaiju… all of humanity-”

Shh… I know, I know. It’s okay. We did our best” Soshiro whispered reassuringly as he ran his hand up and down the length of her spine. “Will you take a walk with me? One last time?”

“A walk? Are you sure? It’s not really great weather for-”

“I’m sure.”

Soshiro chuckled as his wife pursed her lips but eventually nodded and gave in to his request.

They took off there and then, fingers intertwined and hearts warmed. They walked until they reached the beach, so desolate and peaceful without people on it. The couple settled on a bench overlooking the rhythmic waves that crashed onto the pearly sand and retreated relentlessly. His arm rested over her shoulders, pulling her to his side for warmth in the slightly frosty weather.

“What’s on your mind, honey?” Soshiro whispered softly as he pressed one last kiss to his love’s temple.

“Nothing. I love you” She replied simply. It was the truth.

“I love you too.”

There the lovers sat, tightly wrapped in each other’s embrace as though one could shield the other from humanity’s demise. They watched as the sun set on the horizon one last time and the world met its end around them.
