Work Text:

The freckled-faced boy stood still, staring out into the horizon as the sound of heavy winds filled his ears. He didn’t want to leave yet, too engrossed in the sight in front of him - it had been so long since he’d seen the beach.

It was the last night before he and his friends had to head back home. This three-day “mini vacation” was just what he needed to get his mind off of things – it's so unfortunate that it has to end so soon.

That’s why he snuck out - jumping out of his hotel window at 1 AM to head out to the dock and watch the waves meet the sand. He needs to enjoy all of his time here, and if that means being groggy in the morning, then so be it.

As he looked up, admiring the stars, he couldn’t help but hear the faint sound of footsteps amongst the shore, slowly coming closer and closer. It’s so late at night, so he mentally groaned, already accepting his punishment for being caught.

What he didn’t expect was for you to shine in between the moon, the glowing of the night highlighting your face perfectly as you sat down beside him. You were wearing your favorite pajama bottoms, some beat-up sneakers, and an oversized black t-shirt that Iida has graciously let you borrow.

“Izuku, what are you doing out here?” You whispered to the boy, brushing his green locks to the side, seeing as it’s been a while since he got a haircut. “The bus arrives in 5 hours, that’s not enough time to rest!”

Izuku chuckled at you and your concern, offering a full-fledged smile in return. He thought your kindheartedness was cute - but he wished that just this once would you be more carefree.

“Relax y/n, I’m just admiring the beach, you never know when we’ll come back.” He responded, looking into your eyes that were still filled with worry. For the boy, he knew that the certainty of returning was close to nothing - the League of Villains was only getting stronger, and as a result, the students' free time was being cut short.

He knew what he was getting himself into when he applied to UA, he knew that the fate of the world depended on him and his friends - maybe that’s why he didn't want to leave. On this beach, he is just Izuku - not Deku, not All-Might's successor, not One for All's recipient - just Izuku.

Izuku took off his sweater and placed it in your hands, offering a soft smile as he looked off into the distance, making sure you two were alone.

“Why are you up so late anyways Y/n? Did you purposely follow me?” Midoriya asked, playing with the hem of his All-Might shirt as he watched you change into his sweater. The oversized fit made the boy blush, and just this once was he thankful that it was so dark out.

“I was woken up by your incompetence, you should be more sly next time. Also, I followed you because I was worried you would get hurt.” You stated, pushing yourself farther into the sweater so you could smell more of Izuku's scent - it had been a while since you’d borrowed his clothing.

Midoriya took that as a sign to get closer to you, grabbing you by the waist and making you press up against him. The closeness of your bodies gave the two of you warmth, so there were no complaints from either end.

He didn’t know what to say. It’s been a while since you two talked in privacy, the closeness of your friend group always restricted his chances of being alone with you. While he admired his friends deeply, he knew that they were far too dense to get any hints he threw their way.

Neither of you was a fool, you both knew you liked each other. You two also knew that the risk of dating at a time like this was far too high to bear any fruit. If the League knew of this, they could use it to their advantage, seeing as they kidnapped Bakugou not too long ago. Instead, you both opted for staying friends - the love between both of you was far too strong to categorize anyway.

There was another moment of silence as you both stared out into the ocean, admiring the tide and its magnetic pattern, as you and Izuku fell into your own.

For once, the world stood still. It was 1 am and just that. No fighting, no crying, no stress of living - just two heartbeats and the smell of the sea. What could be better than this?

“Hey, I hope you know we’re coming back here. You still have to teach me how to surf!” You slurred, nudging him softly as you began to drift off. Izuku took that as a sign to go back to the hotel rooms, lifting you into his arms as he walked off the dock and back into the beach town.

Then, underneath a street lamp that flickered every few seconds, did he finally see a fully lit face.

Izuku stared at you, taking in your hair that has yet to be covered in sand, and your skin that has not kissed the sun long enough. He looked at your lips, the ones that have yet to taste the delicious drink offered around the pier or feel his vanilla-flavored lips after he ate his favorite ice cream.

“Yeah. We’ll come back.” He whispered, this time with certainty.

Notes:
