"Checkmates, Chaos, and Compromises"

Summary:

Ron and Hermione finally have a sit down to discuss the details of their wedding.

Work Text:

Hermione was meticulously organising the living room, her mind laser-focused on the task at hand. She had pulled out all her binders, spreading them across the coffee table, each one bursting with papers, ideas, and plans. A large calendar, colour-coded and brimming with notes, hung on the walls surrounding the room. Every corner of the space was transformed into a command center for what she considered one of the most important meetings of her life: the wedding planning session with Ron.

In the kitchen, Ron was finishing up the breakfast dishes. The clinking of plates and the sound of running water served as a background soundtrack to Hermione's feverish preparations. It was the weekend, and for once, they were alone in their apartment. They had made it very clear to their friends and family: no one was to come over unless it was an absolute emergency. This day was far too important to be interrupted.

Today marked the beginning of their wedding planning. They were finally going to tackle the exhaustive list that Hermione had put together the moment Ron proposed. The list was detailed, organised, and covered every conceivable aspect of the wedding—from the choice of venue to the colour of the napkins. Hermione had handed it to Ron weeks ago, allowing him time to review it, add his own notes, and prepare for their meeting.

Now, the moment had come for them to compare their thoughts, share their decisions, and negotiate any differences. Hermione was well aware that this would be a long, potentially stressful day, likely filled with disagreements and maybe even a bit of shouting. But she was looking forward to it.

There was something exhilarating about planning their future together, even if it meant butting heads with Ron. She loved the challenge of matching wits with him, of debating and dissecting every detail. But she wouldn’t let him see how much she enjoyed this. For all intents and purposes, while they were discussing wedding preparations, Ron was not her fiancé—he was her adversary.

Ron finally appeared in the living room, still in his pyjamas, just like Hermione. She couldn't help but smile internally at his choice of attire, but what really caught her attention was the fact that he had pulled his hair back using one of her headbands. The sight made her blink in surprise, but she chose not to comment on it; there were more pressing matters at hand.

What intrigued her even more, though, was the binder he held in his hand. It was thicker than she expected and looked just as organised as her own. Hermione's eyes narrowed slightly, a spark of competitive spirit igniting within her. It seemed that Ron had come prepared.

“Well,” she said, trying to keep her voice even and professional, “shall we get started?”

Ron nodded, flipping open his binder and revealing pages of neatly written notes and colour-coded tabs. Hermione raised an eyebrow, genuinely impressed but also a little bit suspicious.

"Is that...a diagram?" she asked, pointing to a particularly detailed page.

Ron grinned. "Yep. And I've even worked out a seating chart too."

Hermione's heart swelled with affection. She loved seeing this side of Ron—his dedication, his effort, his willingness to dive into the details for her sake. But she kept her expression neutral, reminding herself of the task at hand.

"Alright then," she said, picking up her own binder and flipping it open to the first page. "Let's get down to business."

They both sat down on the floor, cross-legged, facing each other with their binders open between them. The day was just beginning, and Hermione knew it would be one to remember.
