Peter’s smile widens, something dark flickering behind his eyes. “And if you hadn’t thrown explosives at me, I might have been willing to tell you why.”
Steve straightens his back, sitting up tall, trying to project a calm authority. “We could help you. Train you, help you control these powers.”
Peter’s eyes narrow, his expression a mix of scorn and amusement. “Help? Do I look like I need your help, Mr. Rogers? Do I look like I got these powers yesterday? I was managing just fine on my own.”
Steve’s voice softens slightly, trying to appeal to Peter’s sense of reason. “You still killed a man, Peter.”
Peter’s lips curl into a bitter smile. “Maybe he deserved it.”
Steve’s face hardens. “No one deserves to get killed.”
Peter leans forward, his tone dripping with sarcasm and anger. “Except for me?”
