Work Text:
“He's dead!” Hugh exclaims as he flops down onto the grass in front of Fiona and Enoch.
“What, who's dead?! What happened?” Enoch Responds almost immediately and with a tone as if he might actually be worried.
“He was so young!” Hugh cries out as he buries his face in Fiona's side, she reacts by Simply holding him as she plays with his hair.
“Who?” Fiona asks in her thick Irish accent being almost inaudible as she looks down at the boy.
“Henry.” Hugh mumbles as he buries his face in Fiona's side even more.
“OH no, I'm sorry dear.” Fiona responds as she looks up at Enoch as if telling him to be supportive to the crying Hugh.
“Who the hell is Henry?!” Enoch asks, his voice filled with concern and confusion as he looks around as if he was the crazy one.
“my Bee.” Hugh responds as Fiona glares at Enoch like he was being insensitive.
“OH, you being’ All doe eyed for some stupid bee?” Enoch exclaims as he goes to stand up.
“He isn't stupid! We need to give him a funeral now.” Hugh says as he sits up to stare at Enoch, his eyes teary and bee's were hugging close to his body.
“Yes, great idea we can have it by the big tree, and we can-” Fiona continues to talk but neither Hugh nor Enoch could understand so they just sit and listen to her jumbled words.
“...can I have the body afterwards?” Enoch asks in a quiet voice not really knowing if this was the time to ask.
“What?? Why do you want to do that? Just let the baby rest.” Hugh says, sounding hurt as he looks at Enoch Like he just punched his dog, or in this case, killed his bee.
“Fine, fine. sorry.” Enoch mumbles under his breath as he stalks away, leaving Hugh in the arms of Fiona.
A few minutes later and everyone had Gathered by the tree in the yard, Hugh holding a small Bee in his palms, one wing torn and the stinger nowhere to be seen.
Fiona stood beside Hugh, one hand on his shoulder, a bouquet of wildflowers In her other.
Clair, Emma, olive, bronwyn, millard, and even Horace, stood looking solemn. While Jacob stood Beside Emma looking confused by how normal this seemed. And Enoch who stood a bit farther from the rest of the crowd.
“I could just bring it back, the bee that is.” Enoch said quietly as he realized how this might just be a big deal to Hugh.
“No, it's alright, it's better in heaven.” Hugh replies as he lowers the insect into the small box before lowering the box into the hole in the ground that Fiona made before this. Fiona placing the flowers over the grave.
Ms peregrine Calls the kids in for dinner moments later and they all file back to the house, leaving Hugh and Enoch.
Hugh looked sorrowful at the grave as Enoch stayed not moving as he debated saying something.
“I can bring it back. Henry, or whatever the bee's name is. It wouldn't be hard.” Enoch says after a moment.
“He had to die at some point, there's no delaying the inevitable.” Hugh mumbles as some Tears drip from his eyes, down his cheeks and dripping onto one of the flower petals.
Enoch just nods before turning to walk back to the house, Hugh coming In for dinner a few minutes later.
