Chapter Text

I'm color-coding my moods, you're yellow, I'm natural blue

Awsten loves Geoff. He’s the sunshine through the rain, the light at the end of every tunnel. While Awsten is filled with misery and gloom, Geoff has the power to push all that aside. To make him think his way through life instead of just floating.

Everyone loves Geoff, loves his manner and his humour and his kindness. People tolerate Awsten, for the most part, but Geoff? There isn’t a person he can’t get along with.

Let's get together and be green like my insides

And Awsten isn’t jealous, of course. He’s just… protective. Of his boyfriend, of the life they’ve built together. People are always staring at Geoff, checking him out. Or are they? Is Awsten paranoid, or projecting?

A girl at the checkout in Costco giggles at a dumb joke Geoff makes. On instinct Awsten grabs his hand and kisses him on the cheek. It’s a stupid display of affection fueled by jealousy, but Geoff doesn’t complain. He grins down at Awsten and boops him on the nose.

He is the sunshine, Awsten is the rain. Somehow, they make a rainbow.

At least I'll match your eyes, jealous and hypnotized

Does Geoff feel the same, is he jealous too? Awsten has a bad habit of hitting on his male friends. Travis, Dallon, Zakk, Otto. He wrote a handful of songs about Otto when they first met - he had a stupid teenage crush that quickly went away when he met Geoff.

Geoff knows that. Does it bother him? If it does, he’s never said, but Awsten has never asked.

They should talk more. They should ask each other things, about their feelings and their perspectives. Why don’t they?

Let's match our faces and be equally in love

Whatever. They’re in love! They have an apartment and a cat and a dog. When they kiss it’s like lightning. Sometimes Awsten’s stupid jokes make Geoff laugh instead of just rolling his eyes. They still have date nights when they remember to, and they only fight once or twice a week.

It’s fine. They love each other. Nothing else matters.

Let's trash our whole afternoon, reciting recycled news

“Let’s do something tonight.” Awsten suggests one afternoon. They haven’t said more than a sentence to each other all day.

“Like what?” Geoff asks, not looking up from his laptop.

“I don’t know.” Awsten has to think very hard about what they actually like to do together. “We haven’t been to the cinema in a while.”

“Didn’t you say we have a lot of work to do?”

“Yeah.” Awsten admits. “Did I tell you about that girl Zakk is seeing?”

“Yeah, you did.” Geoff mumbles. “He’s talked to death about her.”

“Right.”

Until we melt and go back to your hotel room

Tour is usually good for their relationship, if not for them individually. They’re too tired and stressed out to fight about their real problems. So they end up making out in broom closets and secluded hallways whenever they can. They sleep in separate bunks on the bus but always share beds in hotel rooms.

Occasionally, Geoff snaps at someone other than Awsten. The lack of space and constant noise gets to him and he yells at Otto or Lucas. He always apologises and Awsten feels a sick sense of satisfaction that it’s not just him. That he isn’t unique in annoying the hell out of his partner.

Sometimes Geoff smiles when the sunlight hits him just right and Awsten remembers that they are in love.

I'll be your new favorite tune

Awsten likes it when Geoff plays the guitar. It sounds silly, seeing as that’s his whole job. But it isn’t about the recording studios or watching him spin around on stage until even Awsten is dizzy. How he’s never thrown himself off of a stage is some kind of miracle.

It’s the quiet moments, the times when Geoff sits in the window seat with his acoustic and plays whatever comes to mind. Sometimes Awsten sings along if he knows the words, but usually he leaves him in peace. The sound of Geoff’s happiness fills their apartment and takes all the tension from Awsten’s muscles.

I'll be your black cloud by June

“Don’t be a dick, Awsten.” Geoff rolls his eyes.

“Oh, I’m being a dick? Fuck you!” Awsten spits.

What are they arguing about again? Something about the chores neither of them remembered to do. It’s enough to send Awsten storming off to his home office with a slammed door behind him.

He sits and stews in his burning rage for hours. Eventually, he just feels empty and cold. There’s no point in getting mad at Geoff for something that was probably Awsten’s fault.

But only when you miss the rain like I miss you

“I’m sorry.” Awsten says, much later. It’s dark outside now. He isn’t sure what he’s sorry for but it feels like the right thing to say.

“It’s okay. Come here.” Geoff holds out his arms for a hug. He’s sitting on the couch, in the same place he was when Awsten stormed off.

“It won’t happen again.” He says this every single time.

Geoff replies the same way as always. “I know.”

Just double dare me and I promise now that I'll stay

Awsten won’t leave. He can’t. What would he even do without Geoff? Their lives are so intertwined that separating would be impossible.

They don’t need to break up. Everything is fine. They’re so, so in love.

It's not like you're married, but I still got carried away

There was someone else before Awsten. Geoff left them for him, without a second thought. Will that happen again? Will Geoff get bored and give up on him?

You're playing ring around my head, I'll wear you like a halo

Geoff is so perfect. It’s Awsten that’s the problem. He’s the self destructive disaster. Geoff is his angel.

You're a symphony, I'm just a sour note

Geoff is a warm wave on a summer’s day. Awsten is a Tsunami.

I'll take what I can get

Awsten’s won’t leave because there’s nothing better out there for him.

The best is hard to grip when everybody wants you

This is the best thing Awsten has even had, and he won’t let it go.

And everybody wants you

A guy at the bar smiles at Geoff. Ever so polite, Geoff smiles back. Awsten tightens his arm around him and glares at the guy.

He isn’t paranoid, and he isn’t projecting.
