Chapter Text
Emily bashed the door open, JJ and Spencer right behind her.
"FBI! Harold Somerset, if you're here, you're surrounded." Emily yelled. Silence. They spread out, Spencer and Emily canvassing the first floor while JJ took the second.
"Clear!" Spencer yelled from the kitchen. Emily echoed the call from the living room. There was a crash, a yelp, the two went for the source. JJ was being dragged across the hall, struggling in vain. Emily made to shoot, but there was no opening. Somerset, with a strength neither her nor Spencer anticipated, threw JJ over the railing.
"NO!" Spencer yelled. It was the only opening Emily needed. She opened fire, dropping Somerset with three rounds to the chest. She rushed towards JJ and Spencer and was about to check on her friend when Reid stopped her.
"Don't. We don't know the extent of her wounds. She-" The door opened, revealing the rest of the team.
"Call an ambulance. Now!" Emily barked. An ambulance arrived a ten minutes later, and JJ was loaded in.
Twelve hours later
Spencer was restless, pacing back and forth inside JJ's room as he looked at his friend over and over. Surprisingly only her left arm, from the humerus down to all sections of her phalanges, were broken, although there were numerous and concerning skull contusions, By some miracle her neck didn't snap, nor was it in any danger of happening. Just then JJ came to with a moan, and Spencer lunged to her side.
"Jen." Spencer breathed out. "Thank God you're alive. I thought-"
"Where am I?" JJ asked. While the question was harmless in itself, Spencer felt something was off.
"You're at Medstar. You fell-well, were thrown down-from the second floor of a house."
JJ stared at him. "Spencer, right? You're Spencer."
The doctor tensed. "Yes. JJ, what was the last thing you remember?"
"Aside from what you claimed that I was thrown down to the ground floor? Not-"
Just then Emily barged in, panting.
"Sorry I was late. Hotch and the others?"
"On their way. Morgan's picking Garcia up. Will's been notified as well, should be here by six. How-"
"Wait, I know you!" JJ interrupted, pointing at Emily, uncharacteristically excited. "You're Emily, right? Emily something? You replaced Elle."
Spencer's heart all but stopped. No. No, no, no, no.
"JJ," the doctor said quietly, "who are the members of our team?"
JJ frowned. "Spence, I'm not a kid."
"Just, humor us."
"Fine. There's you, me, Morgan, Emily, Garcia, Hotch, and Gideon."
Spencer pursed his lips. "JJ, Gideon left years ago. What you're describing...that was five years prior to now."
"No," JJ stammered as she went pale, shaking her head. "No, you're lying. You're lying. You're lying!"
"JJ-" Spencer began, then yelped as JJ lashed out.
"Don't touch me!" She yelled. "You're lying! You're lying! Lies! Lies!"
Emily all but slammed her palm on the nurse call system, shouting for help. Three nurses came running in, something was injected in JJ's IV drip, and the blonde slowly calmed down, before eventually falling back asleep.
"Go." Emily said quietly. "I'll watch over her."
"Here."
Spencer's head snapped up. Rossi was offering him coffee.
"Thanks." The doctor mumbled, wincing at the undesired aftertaste of the drink.
"So she really has no recollection of the past five years?" The older man asked.
"None. The last moment to her that's clear as day was Emily's first day. Anything beyond that, it's like nothing happened. She doesn't know who you are. She thinks Gideon is still in the team. She-"
Someone rounded the corner Will. Shit.
"Where's JJ?" The man asked frantically, but Spencer blocked his path.
"Will, sit down. I have to tell-"
"Not after I see her." Will snapped.
"It's more complicated than you-"
"She's my girlfriend-"
"Well, she thinks different." Spencer hissed, desperation giving him strength enough to shove Will against the wall, shaking his shoulders. "Will you just stop and listen to me?"
Will shoved him off, but sat down.
"Explain." He ordered.
"Jen was thrown over the railing of a second floor hallway, in which miraculously she survived, with only her entire left arm being busted. What is definitely worrisome is her retrograde amnesia, which made her forget the past five years of her life, including, unfortunately, you."
Will was silent for a few minutes. Then,
"So she doesn't remember me?"
"What JJ remembers of Emily is the latter's first day of work so yeah, I'd say she doesn't remember you. And don't do anything stupid like show her a picture. She went hysterical when I told her what happened, to the point that they had to inject her with Lorazepam. Last thing I need is for her to have a relapse."
Silence, then "If what you say is true, and I'm sure it is, I need you to do something for me."
Spencer frowned. "I'm listening."
"Be there for her. I know how close you two are. And I won't press her to remember me. If she does, good, but if not... Either way, take care of her."
Spencer nodded sharply. "You have my word."
