The Melody in Media

Summary:

"You're trending again on Twitter again." Chuuya's manager informed him. He didn't look up from the piece of music he was writing. He didn't want to sound egotistical, but that wasn't surprising. He was usually trending for some reason or another.

"And why do I care about that?"

"It's who you're trending with..." She trailed off. That was odd. Tomoe was usually very straightforward. Too straightforward at times, maybe, but Chuuya liked her. Chuuya lifted his head so he was actually looking at her, prompting her to continue. "It's Dazai Osamu."

Nakahara Chuuya, the lead guitarist and songwriter of the band The Flags, has been hired to compose the soundtrack for a film directed by an actor-turned-upstart director, aka Dazai Osamu.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

"You're trending again on Twitter." Chuuya's manager informed him.

Chuuya walked toward the recording studio, fidgeting with his guitar case. This was different than anything he'd done before. He'd never taken on a project—especially one this big—alone before. He'd always had the Flags supporting him. They were still supporting him, of course. The climbing number of texts coming from his phone confirmed that, but they wouldn't be taking this step with him.

"Chuuya!" An unfamiliar voice called. He turned to see a teenage girl running up to him. "Oh my god! I can't believe you're here! I never thought I'd run into any celebrity, let alone my favorite musician of all time! You are amazing! Where are the Flags? Are you not with them? Can I have an autograph? And a photo? This is so exciting! My friends are going to be so jealous!"

Chuuya tried not to let his discomfort show on his face as the girl threw questions at him, barely stopping to breathe. He still wasn't used to people just recognizing him when he walked down the street. He didn't think he'd ever get used to it. "Yeah, sure. I don't have a pen or anything, but we can take a quick picture." Chuuya hadn't even finished speaking before the girl's phone was pulled out and shoved in his face. He forced a smile as the girl leaned against him while she snapped the selfie.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" The girl ran off without another word, and Chuuya breathed a sigh of relief. He ducked inside before anyone else saw him. He thought the celebrities who wore disguises out in public were pretentious, but maybe he should start doing that. He would always be grateful to his fans for getting him to where he was now—but some of them were creepy. He tried to shake off the encounter. He needed to be focused on the project, not his annoying fans. He inhaled slowly, trying to recenter himself before pushing open the doors.

Inside was a whirlwind of activity. People with clipboards and headsets were rushing from room to room; others were lounging in a break room-type area, chatting next to a table filled with food and drinks. He stood in the entrance awkwardly until one of the people with a clipboard stopped in front of him.

"Name?" She spoke in a bored but professional tone.

"Nakahara Chuuya."

"Right this way." She stored the clipboard under one arm and started walking away, not looking back to check if he was following. Chuuya fell into step behind her. She had a very no-nonsense air to her, and Chuuya wasn't about to cause problems.

She led him to a recording room full of instruments. "The director will be with you in a moment. Do whatever you need to warm up and prepare. He is a busy man and does not like to be kept waiting." She turned and left the room before Chuuya could respond.

Chuuya did as he was told. He set his bag on the ground and pulled out a flash drive and the music he'd written before coming. He had most of it memorized anyway, but he wanted to be prepared. He plugged the flash drive into the computer, deposited the music on a nearby stand, and moved to warm up on the instruments he'd be using.

He started on the viola first since it was the instrument he was most unfamiliar with. He was still good at it; Piano Man had made sure he was competent in any instrument he learned to play, but it wasn't his best instrument by any means. He played through the scales of the keys he'd be playing in before moving on to the more complex melodies.

He repeated the process on each instrument until he was feeling calm and prepared. Playing always relaxed him. He could tune out the rest of the world and focus purely on the notes he was playing. He felt the rest of his nerves settle as he pulled out his guitar. The instruments they'd provided were in pristine condition, but nothing beat his guitar.

He checked to make sure it was in tune, then started warming up. Playing his guitar felt as easy as breathing. Chuuya closed his eyes and let himself be carried away by the music as he moved from warming up to practicing the piece he'd composed. He would never get tired of the feeling of being immersed in a piece. Nothing else mattered, just the sound coming from his instrument. He finished the piece but kept his eyes closed, not wanting to break out of his reverie just yet.

Slow clapping startled him, nearly causing him to drop his guitar. "Guitar always was your best instrument, wasn't it, Slug."
