Old Dog, New Tricks

Summary:

Kup is curious about how their human architect is spending her non-working hours.

Work Text:

“Lass, what’s that you’re doing?” Kup crouched down next to the Human who had been helping them design the interior of the new club and watched her intently.

“What this?” Kari held up the metal sticks and thread in her hands for a moment, then she went back to twisting and knotting them as Kup watched. “It’s knitting. I’m making a sweater for my dad for his birthday. Have you not seen it before?”

“Don’t remember it if I have, no.” Kup continued watching, trying to make sense of the motions. “You make clothes this way?”

“Clothes, accessories, blankets. I even know a gal back home who makes plant hangers.” The Human grinned. “It’s kind of considered an old lady hobby these days, but a lot of us do it. I’ve been knitting since my grandma taught me when I was six.”

“That’s a long time, for a Human.” Kup shifted so he could sit while he watched. “Think you could do it just a little slower so I can figure out how you’re doing it? It looks a little like magic, with how fast you’re going.”

“Or, I could just teach you. I’ve got a spare set of needles in my room.”

The old mech felt his spark lift and he smiled at her words. It wasn’t often that he got to learn new things these days, and even less often that someone offered to teach him. “I’d like that, if it’s no trouble.”

“None at all. But if you decide you like it, you’ll probably want to have some needles custom made for you.”

“We’ll see. Some of the lads are real good with human hobbies using human size tools.”

“Sounds good, then. Let me finish this row and then I’ll go get them.”
