Work Text:
Friday night. Daichi hated Friday nights. As a teenager in his third year of high school, he should be going to practice and then hanging out with his friends (read: Suga) right after practice until dawn like everyone else his age was doing. But of course, Daichi had to help out his parents like the good eldest son he is.
Being the oldest of five is tiring enough, even more tiring to his parents. So every so often he volunteers himself to babysit. When he does, he never had to babysit late, so sometimes Daichi would go out the later half of the night. But this night was special. It was the Friday of his parent’s anniversary. They deserved a night out, an extra special one for their anniversary. He offered to babysit overnight so they could go out out.
The second he got home from volleyball, he started preparing while his parents got ready to leave. It’s been a long time since Daichi had to actually plan the night. Normally, his parents would never be gone longer for a couple of hours, so it was never a big deal. He never prepared because (usually) his wits and skills he’s gained as captain were enough to get them through. But tonight Daichi had to do some preparation for the long hours. And to make it even easier, two of his siblings were at sleepovers, so tonight should be a breeze. But, he knows that even the two of them can get rowdy, so he wanted to set everything up beforehand; routine things like showers and dinner.
Five thirty rolled along too fast and his parents came down the stairs all dazzled up. He hadn’t seen that vest on his dad since his work’s Christmas party last year and his mom wore makeup for the first time in months. They gave Daichi all he needed to get through the night, even a post-it note of the same bedtime routine he’s been doing since he was born and left with wishes of good luck. Daichi felt prepared, they were just his siblings, afterall.
His sister, Yuna, was always his favorite of the two. He’s always been told by his parents and teachers not to have favorites, but Yuna was just so well-mannered and behaved when she was away from Kenji, the youngest of the five.
Yuna immediately dropped her bag on the ground and ran into his arms for a hug, “Daichi! Daichi! I can’t believe we’re having a sleepover with just us! Are you excited?”
Daichi hugged her back and nodded. With a mask of confidence, he replied, “It’s sure gonna be an adventure, I can promise you that.”
Everything went well for about the first hour, you know, just the laying around and talking part. Telling stories from his week, asking them how their week went, what they wanna do tonight, trivial things.
Daichi’s phone buzzed. In the back of his mind he hoped it was Suga. Either checking in or wishing him luck or sending a random picture of a frog he saw—it didn’t matter as long as it was Suga. He’s been getting closer with Suga this year, really close this past month. He knew he was staring a second longer with each look he stole at the gray-haired beauty, but he didn’t miss the half-second longer gaze when he caught Suga staring. Every day at lunch they’ve been inching closer to each other and using tiny excuses to reach over each other. Even on the last trip out to Nekoma Suga fell asleep on his shoulder on the ride back (he misses the weight). But alas, it was only a dinner reminder.
“Aright, Kenji and Yuna.” Daichi stood up and looked at both of them. “One or Two?”
This was always a fun trick Daichi used on them since they were real little. There was only one option, but Daichi made them think they had a choice to avoid arguing.
Kenji was the first to answer, “Two! Two!”
“Mac and cheese it is!” Daichi walked over to the kitchen while they stayed in the living room and kept themselves busy. He felt comfortable letting them watch the television on their own. Wasn’t too hard to handle, plus Daichi had a clear view of them.
That all changed once the water started to boil. They were yelling at each other, fighting over whether to watch Pokemon or Peppa Pig. Daichi grew up watching those shows, so he got them hooked on it.
“I wanna watch Pokemon!” Kenji yelled.
“Well I want to watch Peppa Pig!” Yuna rebutted.
Daichi knew that it was going to be a long night. He turned the burner down and walked over to them. They looked like some knot ball, completely entangled around each other trying to get this damn remote.
“Hey!” Daichi yelled over them. “Separate! Now!”
“Not until she gives me the remote!” Kenji yelled back.
“Why can’t you just be nice for once?” Yuna yelled.
Daichi hated yelling. It gave him a headache and he yelled enough at practice for the rest of the week. He was about to turn the whole tv off but his phone rang before he could snatch the remote. Both kids stopped for a moment to see what Daichi would do. He grabbed his phone out of his pocket and looked at it. A smile crept onto his face.
“Hey, Suga!” Daichi answered.
Both of Daichi's siblings dropped the remote to listen in. Daichi could hear Kenji whisper in the background, “Is that a boy?”
“Daichi!” Suga replied. “I'm happy you picked up! A few people from our-”
Daichi couldn’t hear after that. Yuna lunged towards the remote on the ground, causing Kenji to dive after it. They rolled like they were one of the cartoons they were fighting over. He could imagine the scratches and rug burns they were giving each other.
“Cut that out now or I swear I will punt both of you!” Daichi threatened.
It must’ve not been that threatening cause they just laughed, but it did get them to stop.
“I’m sorry,” Daichi apologized. “What did you say?”
Suga laughed. “Sounds like you’re having a fun time! I was gonna ask if you wanted to hang out with me, Asahi, and Noya tonight but you sound busy.”
“Yeah, just a bit,” Daichi joked. “Thank you for thinking of me though, that was kind of you.”
“I think about you all the time,” Suga joked back. Daichi could hear his warm smile. He paused, took an audible breath, and said, “I’ve missed you. It's been a while since we saw each other outside of school.”
“OH MY GOSH DAICHI IS BLU-” Daichi tackled Kenji to the ground, covering his mouth. He’s liked Suga for the longest time now but never told him directly. Just flirty comments he’s seen Kuroo and Oikawa use. His feelings with Suga were more personal, more precious to him. He was possessive over them, not willing to give up the lightness in his heart. And his siblings were not about to ruin it.
“Yeah, I’ve missed you too,” Daichi sighed. “But have fun tonight. Hope you don’t third wheel too hard.”
“You sound like you got a handful…need some help?” Suga asked.
Daichi shook his head, “No I-I think I’m alright. My parents are gone overnight and I’ll have to put them to bed soon enough. Their energy will make the time go by fast.”
“I’ll be over in a bit.”
“No, Suga you have-” Beep. He hung up. Guess Daichi was getting some help tonight.
Daichi sat down on the couch in a bitter-sweet release. Suga was his vice-captain, his number one support, his best support. And he definitely needs support tonight, whether he wants to admit it or not. But on the other hand…
Yuna jumped onto his lap, “Who’s Suga?” His siblings have never met Suga. They’ve heard of him, sure. Maybe has seen him play in a match a few times. Knows that his mom asks about him at dinner a few times. But they’ve never formally met him. Him and Suga always chose Suga’s house to hang out and do homework because it was more…less of what his house was.
Daichi laughed. “Suga is a friend of mine. He’s gonna be over soon to come hang out with us.”
“Oh Oh Oh~” Kenji teased. “Suga’s coming over. I’m gonna tell Mom!”
Daichi huffed. “Go ahead, tell Mom. She’s met him before.”
“I’m gonna tell her that he’s coming over to make out with you~” Kenji made kissy faces at him.
Daichi palmed Kenji’s forehead and pushed him to the ground. “Kid, you’re like ten, how do you know about that? And we’re not that way.”
“I’m nine!” he reminded Daichi.
“Nine, whatever.” Daichi rolled his eyes. “Just don’t embarrass me.”
Daichi was encouraging his siblings to eat the last bites of their noodles at the bottom of the bowl when there was a soft knock at the door followed by it opening before Daichi could answer it. Very classic Suga. Hasn’t even been over once but acting like he’s been over a million times.
But god was Suga stunning. His hair had its signature softness to it and curled up at the ends. His beauty mark complimented his dimples like the stars complemented the moon. The aura outlining his body made him glow like New York City. In every possible way, he was gorgeous. Gorgeous enough to make Yuna drop her spoon. “Is that Suga?”
Suga laughed, “Yes! My name is Suga. You must be Yuna, right?”
She happily nodded. “Yeah! And that’s Kenji!” She pointed over to him. “He’s a bully.”
Suga set two bags filled with god knows what on the floor next to his neatly squared away shoes. He looked Kenji up and down and shrugged. “Well he doesn’t look like a bully.”
“That’s because I’m not!” Kenji pointed out. “I like Suga, he gets me.”
Well this is a good start.
Suga pulled up a chair in between them. “Have you been having fun with your big brother?”
They had mixed reactions. Yuna was always the happiest of the three. She always remembered the good times rather than the bad ones. Kenji tends to focus more on what he got punished for, like when Daichi yelled at him for wrestling.
“You better be good for us tonight, okay? You already gave Daichi a hard time. That's why I'm here! We’re gonna have some fun and give Daichi a break. Got it?”
They nodded at him and gave them in sync high-fives.
Daichi smiled at the thought. A night just to spend time with the most important people in his life. Sounded like a dream. Daichi stood up. “You two finish up eating. Me and Suga are gonna think of something to do while our bellies settle, alright?”
They both nodded and went back to eating. Daichi and Suga sat down on the couch.
“Thank you for coming,” Daichi started. “You didn’t have to. I know you had plans tonight, if this becomes too much for you don’t be scared to leave. I’ll be okay. You know I watch them all four of them on my own.”
Suga made eye contact with him. Just that alone made Daichi calm down, some of his worries went away. He already felt better. “I’m not gonna leave you until you physically drag me out that door,” he promised.
“Don’t tempt me like that, Suga,” Daichi chuckled and leaned close to his ear. “I might just keep you here forever.”
Suga slid a finger over his hand, tracing a prominent vein. “That’s alright with me.”
Daichi took slower breaths, trying to keep his heart rate down. “I have some coloring pages printed out I think I wanna have them do, settle them down and all. I wanna take them to the park after to let them get their energy out.”
Suga nodded. “If that’s what you want then go ahead. I’ll watch over them. Go take a bath or something. I don’t know, sit in your room and read? Whatever you want to do. I’ll keep them occupied for the next hour or so. You just have a little mental reset.”
Daichi smiled. “Thanks Suga. I think I need that. I’ve been working hard, you know.”
Suga patted Daichi on the back. “Of course I know you have. Extremely hard. Wrangling those first years, setting Ennoshita up for success, dragging Asahi out his mental slumps. You go get the colors and stuff and I’ll clean up.” He stood up and went into the kitchen, leaving Daichi all flustered and smiling.
This was going to be a fun day.
Daichi spent the next hour literally napping. He knew that he was going to be exhausted trying to keep up and running around with the little runts. Daichi woke up to his alarm and stretched out. Grabbing his phone, he went back into the kitchen. He leaned against the wall and watched as Suga handed out markers to his siblings and encouraged their creative ideas.
“Having fun?” Daichi asked.
Suga whipped around, a little startled.
“Yes!” Yuna giggled. “Look at what Suga helped me make!”
Daichi wasn't exactly sure what it was, but it was a cute animal that had many other animals illustrated within it. “Awe that looks good Yuna. What about you, Kenji?” Daichi walked over behind Suga, placing a hand on his chair back and looking over his shoulder.
They took turns showing Daichi what they made. Suga smirked proudly.
“This all looks nice, kids. Go get his shoes on. We’re going to the park!”
The kids left everything behind as they raced to get their shoes on. Suga started to do a little picking up, but Daichi told him they would worry about it when he went home.
Everyone was accounted for and Daichi started his walk to the park. Yuna was holding his hand and Kenji started to trudge behind just after a block.
“Slow down!” he called. “I can’t keep up!”
“Dude, it's been a block, chill out,” Daichi told him.
“Do you want me to carry you?” Suga offered.
“Oh my gosh yes!” Kenji started making grabby hands at Suga. Daichi laughed at how silly it was.
Suga counted and on three hoisted Kenji up and over his head, effortlessly placing him down on his shoulders. To be fair, it was a bit impressive, and it was also kinda hot, but we don’t talk about that.
“What? That’s not fair!” Yuna argued. “I wanna be carried!”
“I can carry you! I’m strong!” Daichi reminded her.
“No, I want Suga to carry me!”
“If you behave well at the park I’ll carry you back,” Suga offered. “Deal?”
“Deal.”
The park was very easy going. The easiest park trip that Daichi has had yet. Suga made it so easy for him to make sure both of his siblings were being safe and playing nicely together. Normally, whenever he did find the confidence to take all four of his siblings to the park, at least two ended up with scratches or bruises. But Yuna and Kenji were well behaved, played nicely together with Suga monitoring and encouraging them. Daichi had visions of Suga playing with students in the next couple years.
Suga kept his end of the deal and carried Yuna back. When they got back, the kids put on their nightwear and Daichi cleaned up the kitchen. Everyone regrouped in the living room, where Suga had pulled multiple blankets from the closet and a few chairs. “Wanna make forts?”
Of course everyone wanted to make forts, even Dachi. He hasn't made a fort in a long time, since he was in middle school maybe. Daichi and Suga were the main builders. Yuna and Kenji were more than happy to decorate the inside and grab what they wanted to put in. Daichi and Suga made one small one for the kids, and one bigger one for themselves.
Suga truly did make Daichi feel young again (not that he was that old, but the Dadchi jokes do get to him). Every time Daichi saw Suga, he had a burst of energy and more motivation to get up and do something. He really did love everything about Suga and everything he did for him.
“Good job guys!” Suga praised. “I brought a surprise over!”
Suga went to his extra bag and pulled out a few board games, all in their wrapping. Daichi looked at him in shock. “Suga, you didn’t have to get games for us! We have some!”
“But you’ve never talked about these ones and never brought them over to my house. I assume you don’t have these ones?” Suga asked, and of course he was right. “Considering them a house warming gift. That’s what people do when they’re over for the first time, right? They have more ways to be entertained now. They’re all basic and non-competitive games, that way you don’t have to worry about them fighting.”
Daichi didn’t even know what to say. “Thank you” was nowhere near enough to express how he felt. This was so damn thoughtful of Suga. All Daichi could do was hug him, melted into his arms. He squeezed his shoulders, held him tight to his body and whispered how much he appreciated him. His siblings joined Daichi in the hug, jumping on Suga’s back.
They played games until the kids couldn’t stay focused enough because they were so tired. Suga looked up some stories online and read them to them. They fell asleep in the big tent meant for Daichi and Suga. Yuna passed out in Daichi’s lap and Kenji leaned on Suga’s shoulder.
Daichi picked the kids up and laid them down in their own tent, putting a blanket over them, and returned to his tent.
“Thank you for coming over. I think you might’ve made the kids’ year,” Daichi told Suga.
Suga propped up some pillows and leaned into them, one hand playing with the blanket, the other supporting his head. “Yeah no problem. Thank you for letting me come over. This was way better than going out and trying to pretend like I don’t notice Noya trying to climb in Asahi’s lap every five seconds.”
Daichi nodded and leaned onto the pillow that Suga was on. “You’re really good with kids, you know.”
He smiled and hesitantly took his hand, “I have a sister too, y’know.”
“You think you could handle another one?” Daichi asked.
Suga shook his head. “By myself? 24/7? God no. I would drown. Teaching is more than enough for me.” He caught Daichi’s eye. “That’s one thing that I really admire about you. You’re so strong headed and stick through the pain. I don’t get how you handle all four every week. Thank you for being amazing.” He shifted to his side, lifting his arm as an open invitation.
Daichi snuggled into his chest and by surprise Suga placed his arm over him. “What else makes me amazing?” Daichi asked, looking up and sliding his leg between Suga’s.
“Oh so now we support pandering?” Suga joked. “You’re amazing because of the way you handle all situations—in school, at practice, here. The way that you carefully observe everything, make sure everyone is safe, and put others before yourself. I can only think of one bad thing about you?”
“What’s that?”
“You don’t share my last name,” Suga whispered into his ear, lightly laughing and kissing the top of his head.
They both laughed about it for a couple of seconds in silence. Daichi leaned up, kissing his cheek back and nuzzling. “You’re gonna be this good with our kids, right?” Daichi asked him daringly.
“Our kids?” he questioned, making eye contact with him.
Daichi nodded, pinching Suga’s cheeks. “Yes, our kids, silly.”
