Buns in the oven (literally)

Summary:

Work Text:

It was a quiet Friday night, moonlight cascaded through the open window, carrying with it the soft, cool air that only an August summer night could offer.

Tobio wished he could blame his insomnia on the heat, the hum of traffic outside their apartment, or even the soft snoring of his partner beside him. But the truth was, he just couldn’t get comfortable. His swollen belly made it impossible to lie face down, and the occasional kick from his very awake baby didn’t help either.

Each little nudge from inside made him chuckle, a small reminder that their son was growing stronger. Tobio was certain the baby was going to be a football player with how active he was already. He couldn’t wait to meet him, but at only the second trimester, he still had a long way to go.

With a loud sigh, Tobio tried to rouse his alpha, hoping for a little late-night company. He knew Kei was exhausted from both work and practice, and it wouldn’t be fair to wake him just because Tobio was bored. But still… he was bored.

The clock on his bedside table read 1:15 a.m. after his second attempt to disturb the blond failed. It was Saturday already. Giving up, Tobio slid out of bed, casting one last glance at his sleeping alpha before wandering out of the room in search of some entertainment.

He thought about watching an old volleyball match, but the thought didn’t hold much appeal. Since hitting his second trimester, his doctor had advised him to stop playing, and watching others on the court just reminded him of that.

What had his sister told him when she couldn’t sleep during her pregnancy? Ah, yes—warm milk. It sounded like a good idea, and with the weather a bit cooler tonight, it seemed like the perfect remedy.

The omega made his way to the kitchen, his favorite room in the apartment. It was spacious, painted a soft, creamy white, and filled with natural light during the day. It connected to the living room, creating a cozy atmosphere he loved.

He always enjoyed cooking—something not many people knew about, aside from Kei and their closest friends. It was a good thing too, considering his alpha’s culinary skills extended only to instant ramen and microwave meals.

After heating up the milk, Tobio poured it into his favorite mug and perched on the kitchen island, savoring the warm, quiet moment. He took a sip, but as the liquid warmed him, a sense of emptiness gnawed at his stomach.

This would be perfect with some cookies.

Well, the night was young, and sleep clearly wasn’t in the cards. After confirming he had all the necessary ingredients—especially the chocolate chips—Tobio started on the cookies. His cravings had kicked in a few weeks ago, but thankfully, they hadn’t strayed into any strange territory yet. For now, he just had an insatiable sweet tooth, which suited Kei just fine, since the alpha shared the same love for sweets. Every time Tobio baked, Kei would come drifting into the kitchen, practically salivating at the smell.

It was a simple recipe, and soon enough, Tobio had the dough prepared and placed neatly on the pan before sliding it into the pre-heated oven. The cookies wouldn’t take long to bake, and he made a large batch so that Kei could enjoy some in the morning. Still, the thought of waiting around for them to finish bored him. Another idea popped into his mind, one that was sure to keep him occupied.

I could make some brownies too.

He had everything he needed for that as well, including nuts to add a little extra texture. So, with nothing else pressing, Tobio got to work on round two of his late-night baking spree.

He was halfway through mixing the brownie batter when the oven dinged, signaling the cookies were ready. Excited, he pulled them out and immediately tried one—only to burn his tongue. He winced but couldn’t help but smile; despite the minor burn, it tasted amazing.

A swift kick from inside his belly seemed to confirm that sentiment, his little one apparently approving of the treat. Tobio chuckled to himself, convinced that his son would inherit his father’s sweet tooth.

With the brownie batter prepped, he slid the tray into the oven. This one would take a bit longer to bake, but still not too long. Yet, the moment the brownies were out of sight, he was already feeling restless again.

As he washed up the growing pile of dishes, Tobio noticed the extra melted chocolate he had left over. He frowned. He couldn’t just let it go to waste.

Chocolate muffins sound pretty good right about now.

For the third time that night, Tobio gave in to his cravings and set to work on yet another batch of baked goods. He didn’t even realize he was grinning, completely absorbed in the process. Baking was proving to be the perfect distraction from his insomnia, though he silently hoped it wouldn’t become a nightly habit. No matter how much he loved it, he needed sleep too.

By the time the brownies were done, and the muffins were in the oven, the kitchen had become warm, a bead of sweat forming on his forehead. He wiped it away with his arm and continued washing up, feeling the slight ache in his back from standing so long.

Once everything was cleaned, Tobio returned to his mug of milk, now cold from neglect. He sighed, heating it up again before sitting down to enjoy his cookies and brownies. A few minutes later, just as the last batch of muffins finished baking, a voice from behind startled him.

“Tobio? What the hell are you doing?” Kei’s voice was groggy as he stood in the doorway, clad only in boxers, rubbing his eyes before reaching for his glasses. “It’s three in the morning.”

“I couldn’t sleep,” Tobio mumbled, glancing sheepishly at the mountain of baked goods. “Your son won't stop kicking.”

“Why didn’t you wake me?” Kei walked over, wrapping his arms around Tobio from behind as he transferred the muffins onto the counter.

“I tried. You wouldn’t budge. Plus, you were snoring.”

“I don’t snore,” Kei grumbled, burying his face in the crook of Tobio’s neck, inhaling the omega’s sweet blueberry scent. Since the pregnancy, his scent had grown sweeter, and over time, a faint note of milk had developed, signaling the upcoming birth.

The alpha couldn’t get enough of it.

“You do,” Tobio insisted, spinning around to nestle comfortably against Kei’s chest. “I’m gonna record you tomorrow. You’ll see.”

“Don’t be mean, King.”

“Wanna eat some?” Tobio asked, tilting his head slightly, as if daring Kei to resist the temptation of his freshly baked goods.

“I’ll eat in the morning. Come here, let’s get you two to bed,” Kei replied, his voice soft as he gently caressed Tobio’s belly with one hand while his other hand intertwined with the omega’s, leading him back to the bedroom.

“Come on, you didn’t even taste a cookie.” Tobio pouted, his signature look that never failed to break Kei’s resolve, as the alpha guided him onto the bed, helping him get comfortable.

“You come on. It’s late, and I know you’ll be grumpy in the morning if you don’t get enough sleep.”

“Tell that to your son. He hasn’t stopped kicking since nightfall.”

“You say he’s my son,” Kei muttered, slipping off his glasses and placing them on the bedside table before settling beside Tobio. His arms wrapped securely around his omega’s waist as he smirked. “But if I remember correctly, it takes two to make one.”

Tobio blushed, hiding his face against Kei’s chest, the familiar scent of petrichor wrapping around him like a blanket. The smell always made him feel warm, safe, and a little giddy. Even their son seemed to calm down, soothed by the alpha’s steady presence. With Kei holding him close, Tobio felt the weight of his sleepless night melt away.

Tobio barely had time to look up and breathe before Kei's lips descended upon his. The kiss started softly, their lips brushing together in a gentle exploration. Tobio lost himself in the sweet sensation-Kei's lips were firm yet tender, each touch a promise of warmth and security. The alpha's strong hands were holding him close, and the familiar scent of petrichor enveloped him, grounding him in the moment.

As the kiss deepened, Tobio melted against Kei, surrendering to the wave of affection. Kei's lips moved with deliberate slowness, savoring the kiss as if it were a precious treasure. Tobio responded eagerly, letting the alpha take control as their mouths danced together, sharing a quiet intimacy that spoke louder than words.

When Kei finally pulled back, his lips left a lingering warmth on Tobio's. He began to trail soft kisses down Tobio's neck, each touch delicate and reverent. If there was a nip or a bite, Tobio didn't pull away; instead, he mewled softly, offering more of himself to Kei, his breath hitching at the unexpected sparks of pleasure.

Kei lifted his head to place a tender kiss on Tobio's forehead, the gesture filled with affection. "Get some sleep," he murmured gently. "We can enjoy everything you baked in the morning."

With Kei’s soothing presence and the promise of a new day, Tobio's exhaustion from the day finally caught up with him. He let out a soft yawn, snuggling closer to Kei, and closed his eyes, feeling a deep sense of contentment and safety in his alpha's embrace.
