Hawkins is a small town, everyone knows everyone—and Eddie has been in school with Steve Harrington since kindergarten. They were in the same third grade play in elementary, they were square dance partners for a week in seventh, and they had three years in the same remedial math classes in high school. Eddie knows his way around Harrington’s house as well as any other teenager in Hawkins does, went to all the same house parties, the same field parties, the same lake parties. Will gathers up all his courage into his sore arms, cradling bravery against his chest, holding it over his broken-and-then-healed ribcage. “Ever since I got back from the Upside Down, I’ve been in pain.”
“What do you mean?” Mike asks.
“It’s like I came back wrong. My body hurts pretty much all the time. It wasn’t that bad when it started, but it just kept getting worse and worse and now I’m just—” Will swallows the lump in his throat. “I’m crippled, basically. I’m sorry.”
Mike’s mouth opens and closes a couple times. “Hold on, did you say since the Upside Down? Three years ago?”
Will nods.
“And when you say ‘all the time’, you mean all the time?”
“The severity changes a lot, but yes.”
Mike looks… very concerned. “Even right now?”
It’s not funny, but he laughs. “Especially right now.”

Steve's first real college assignment is to take care of a flour bag baby. With his class partner Eddie Munson, who happens to be an alpha.
-Then Eddie snaps his jaw at the other alpha, the sound of teeth hitting teeth ringing between Steve’s ears. And from his vantage point, he swears he sees Eddie’s eyes flash red.
The other alpha's hands slowly unwind from Eddie’s vest. Eddie bears down until the other cowers. It's subtle. A tilt of his head in deference. Eddie’s won.
