Don't ask, Don't tell (the proposal)

Summary:

Luke Alvez has left the army and is home to his lover Spencer Reid. Because of don't ask don't tell nobody knows about their relationship.

This is set around season five so obviously it's completely AU with Luke and spencer being together before he even appears in the show.

Just an excuse to write something sweet and cute for Luke and Spencer since there aren't enough fics about them

Notes:

I don't own criminal minds I just wanted to play with the characters after a rewatch.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Luke Alvez, formerly sergeant Luke Alvez of the 75th Rangers Regiment until 3 days ago, woke from what had been his best sleep in months to the sound of a phone ringing. It wasn't his own his phone lay blissfully silent on the bedside table next to him. The phone that was currently ringing belonged to the soft blonde-y brown haired man sleeping soundly next to him. Spencer Reid...Doctor Spencer Reid of the FBI's Behavioural analysis unit...his Cariño, the absolute love of his life since they had been introduced 2 years ago.

Due to the don't ask, Don't tell policy that the army had in place neither men had been able to admit their relationship to anybody but family but as of three days ago he was no longer army and Spencer was now wearing a ring on his finger. Sure 'gay marriage' still wasn't recognised in the US but to know that Spencer was finally wearing the ring he had brought and had worn on the same chain as his dog tags while out over in Iraq was enough to fill him with joy.

The phone was still ringing and Spencer, exhausted from his demanding job, and their very enthusiastic round of love making the night before, was staying asleep. In fact, he had burrowed further into Luke and was holding him like he never wanted to let him go ever again. Luke let out a fond laugh, gently brushing the mass of curls out of the younger man's face, before kissing him on the cheek and whispering.

"Cariño, your phone is ringing..."

"Five more minutes?" Soencer grumbled his voice thick with sleep as he tried to keep his body from fully waking.

"Sorry Cariño, crime doesn't sleep and nor do those that fight it..." he said wishing he could have had more time with Spencer since his return but since Spencer wasn't out to the team in both his sexuality and that he had a lover that had returned from active service they couldn't make an excuse. "I'll go make you a coffee, take a shower and wake up that beautiful brain of yours..." he slowly untangled himself from Spencers vice like grip and slipped out of their shared bed.

Their apartment wasn't very big so it was a matter of moments for him to slip into the living and kitchen areas. Evidence of last night lay all around him. His uniform and Spencer's clothes pooled in areas they had dropped them as they made their way to the bedroom. The microwave dinner for one that Spencer had been making when Luke had surprised him by coming home forgotten on the side. With a smile Luke pressed the start button on the only expensive piece of equipment in the place Spencer's coffee machine while he thought about the night before.

- flashback - Luke wasn't sure if he should have messaged Spencer before coming home, his lover didn't deal well with surprises after all as came from the nature of his job but between landing back on US soil his discharge a d getting home there hadnt been time. Hoping that this would be a good surprise...if Spencer was even home. Spencer's job with the FBI meant that he travelled all over the US sometimes without much notice. Still, he was here now and even an apartment was home.

As he fished out his key he fingered the chain around his neck that held his dogtags and the ring he was going to finally give Spencer. He'd brought it six months after meeting Spencer and had kept it with him looking at it and playing with it do he knew what he had waiting for him, what he had to live for. Spencer didn't know he had it, at least he had never mentioned it in the sparce correspondences all that had to be sent with his mom's letters and all with no markers that would indicate gender. Spencer had always signed off as Pen and most of his squad had took it has being Penelope and Luke had let them. No pictures had been shared but Luke didn't them, even without his lover's eidetic memory he could easily picture Spencer in all his lanky, slender glory.

Hoping to see his lover inside the apartment he pushed open the door and was met with a warm blast from the heating that Spencer insisted he needed to stay warm after growing up in a desert and the scent of overly processed food that must have come from the microwave. Music was playing from the old record player songs that Spencer and his mother had listened to when he was young. It wasn't music that Luke enjoyed but now it filled his very soul with love.

Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree was just starting as Luke dropped his bag and made his way further into the apartment. Spencer was standing as he ate clearly having time to remove his contacts and put on his glasses before grabbing a meal from the freezer. He hadn't noticed that Luke was there as he was flipping through one of his comfort books. Clearly the last case he had been on was tough but not enough so that he had curled up on the sofa and not ate at all and Luke made his way quickly towards him his foot squeaking the loose floor board and startling the man that was like a mirage in the desert for Luke's heart. He turned his hand moving for the gun on his hip for a second before his eyes widened and he smiled.

"Luke!"

"Spencer..." Luke replied drinking him in for just a moment before taking off his chain and sliding off the ring. It wasn't how he had planed on asking his lover but still it felt right. Before Spencer could truly react to him being there he dropped down on one knee, right there in their kitchen. "I'm out...Discharged...I've had this ring for over a year. It's been with me through this tour and the last. Looking at it made me remember what I was coming home to...I know we can't get married but will you do me the honour of wearing my ring?" He asked as Tony Orlando was still asking if his partner still wanted him.

"...Y-yes...of course I will..." Spencer croaked dropping down to his own knees his hands coming to cover Luke's trembling ones. "Was there any doubt?"

"...A little...I mean I know you probably can't wear it at work..."

"Luke the moment you put that ring on my finger I'm never willingly taking it off..." Spencer told him and Luke stumbled over sliding the ring onto the slender finger. It fit perfectly and Luke couldn't stop himself from pressing a kiss to it before lurching forward and covering Spencer's mouth with his own. It had been 6 months since they had last kissed but it was so natural between them, their hands moved on their own as they started stripping each other and began scrambling to the bedroom. - end Flashback

"Un...coffee..." Spencer moaned stumbling out of the bedroom his hair damp and fluffy from the shower. He didn't look any more awake than he had when Luke had left the bed but still he was dressed in his adorable outfit of brown pants slightly oversized shirt and sweater. His tie was askew and a part of Luke...the soldier he'd been for so long...wanted to smooth it out but he didn't finding it adorable. Spencer dragged his hand through his hair the ring catching the light of the kitchen and Lukes heart skipped.

"What are you going to tell your team?"

"I'm not gonna say anything, until they notice and then i can confirm I'm dating somebody....maybe we can have them over and introduce you that way? It would be better not to tell them your name yet... Garcia would know everything about you before you could blink...but as soon as the case is over we can finally make the introductions..." Spencer mused and Luke gave a nod pressing a kiss to his cheek while handing him his coffee.

"If that's the way you want it, cariño...I was thinking we could introduce you to some of my old squad as well?"

"So long as you're okay with it, Luke..."

"They are good guys, Spence, i think most of them have worked out Pen isn't a woman but they never said anything cause..." Luke shrugged. Spencer smiled kissing his cheek with understanding.

"I really wish I could stay..." he sighed but Luke shook his head.

"Nope somebody needs you and your beautiful brain. I'll be here when you get home, okay?"

"Alright...I best get going..." Spencer said focusing himself by shaking his head as drained the coffee not bothered by the heat of it. Another kiss and Spencer grabbed his brown messenger bag and headed out leaving Luke to smile after him contemplating their future while worrying what Spencer's team...his family would think about them and the ring that was now on his finger.

Notes:

My first fiction in the criminal minds universe. I'm British so forgive the mistakes.
I have been re watching criminal minds lately and couldn't help but fall in love with the idea of Luke and Spencer. I love how he actually listens to Spencer and asks him questions.
