Work Text:
Akaashi looked down at his new years resolution
1) Sleep more
He crossed it off.
He wrote it again.
1) Sleep more
1) Sleep more
He signed, he already knew he was going to fail. He knew because for the past 3 years that was his only resolution, and for the past three years nothing had changed in his sleeping patterns. It’s not even like he could blame bad habits or too much caffeine or too much blue light before bed. It was all the fault of Mr. Golden Eyes. At least that’s what Akaashi called him, he wished he knew his name but his dreams weren’t that kind. They were only good for giving him glimpses of Mr. Golden Eyes and waking him up longing for the other.
For months, years, he’s been having dreams about this man who was the slightest bit taller than him, he had black and white hair that sometimes looked gray when he moved, he was a volleyball player, he was loud and bright and everything Akaashi could ever want, even before he knew that’s what he wanted. Thoughts of Mr. Golden Eyes filled his waking moments so much that he even ruined his one and only relationship because he couldn’t stop comparing his partner to the man in his dreams. The one he wished was real. The one that wore his heart on his sleeve and always had praises ready for him.
Akaashi looked at the clock, he sighed realizing he was going to be late to the party Konoha was holding for new years if he sat here and thought about resolutions any longer, so he decided he could think of something on the subway ride there. He grabbed his beanie, and his dark blue scarf and left his apartment, getting on the elevator. His thoughts drifted to his dream last night, it had to be one of his favorites even if it had left his heart aching a little.
He’d been sitting on some bleachers, looking onto an empty gym court, he knew enough to know that the net that divided the court meant he was looking onto a volleyball court. The place had looked eerie, all empty and quiet, and then he felt someone sit down next to him, he smiled as the person spoke, “did you come to see me play?”
“I can’t see you play if there isn’t a game to watch, now can I?” Akaashi turned, smirking at the other. This was something his mind sometimes did, not all of his dreams lined up so sometimes he had to push his mind to imagine the whole scene. Suddenly there was noise with people yelling, and shoes squeaking, and whistles blowing. And there were people prepping for a game down below, one who looked remarkably like his new next door neighbor, Kuroo. Regardless, the scene felt more complete like this instead of the quiet from moments ago.
“I’m gonna make it the best game you’ve ever seen!” The golden eyed man said, everything from his hair to his fingers to his shoes radiating happiness and life and wonder. Then he stopped and looked at Akaashi as serious as he’d ever been, a look and expression foreign on his face. He then dropped it and smiled, only to say the most devastating thing he could have possibly said, “I wish you were real.” And the scene was broken, and Akaashi woke up, because he knew that was his own mind saying those words back at him. I wish you were real.
Akaashi was so lost in thought he barely noticed the elevator reaching the lobby, three people came into the elevator and one of them bumped into him, he was about to say something but didn’t when he saw it was his neighbor’s soft spoken boyfriend, Kenma, he just murmured a soft “it’s ok” and walked out. He walked a few steps and then reached into his jacket pocket to pull out his beanie but it wasn’t in his pocket any more. He looked at the floor around him and then at the path he’d come from and then at the elevator.
His neighbor was shaking his head while pressing a button on the side panel of the elevator, his neighbor’s boyfriend was pointing at Akaashi from the elevator saying something Akaashi couldn’t hear, and the third man, who’d had his back to Akaashi, was turning around to look at him, with the beanie in his hands. Akaashi’s eyes locked with golden ones and Akaashi’s whole body froze. The other man however didn’t, he shouted a loud “No! Wait!” and stuck his hands out so the closing elevator doors wouldn’t shut and Akaashi started running to him.
The other man simply opened his arms and caught him as Akaashi slammed into his arms, his heart beating loud in his ears, all he could hear was the other man repeating over and over, “you’re real, you’re real, you’re real,” as he slammed back against the wall of the elevator from the force of the impact into his arms. Akaashi was in shock and couldn’t do much more than to hug him tighter and think that he’d finally be able to sleep in peace now.
