Under the dappled light of the jungle canopy, a Venusaur clears away the undergrowth. With careful, dexterous vines, she pulls out fast-growing seedlings and scatters decomposing leaves over the rich soil. She presses an ear to the ground from time to time. Her sensitive hearing is adapted for low frequencies, allowing her to hear the thundering steps of others of her species across vast distances. Today, however, she is not looking for other Venusaur. She is listening for the sounds of her awakening offspring.
The bulbs she planted in the soil have been growing over the past few weeks. When she hears the soil begin to shift and thrash below, she sets to work scratching at the dirt, calling to the young Bulbasaur. Her voice guides them to the surface. A brood of them slowly dig themselves out of the earth. The Venusaur lets them catch their breath, and then shakes the grand pink flower on her back. A fragrant cloud of pollen lands on the Bulbasaur. Their pale bodies begin to turn vivid green in response, their mother’s pheromones encouraging them to produce more chlorophyll. From now on, they will rely on sunlight for much of their energy. She begins to move through the jungle in search of sunlit meadows. The little Bulbasaur trot after her, gaining confidence with every step.
