“I don’t recall ever seeing you on the track, Oka. Surely you’re not the best person to lecture me on perseverance,” Kaoru snapped.
Oka sighed again, trying not to respond carelessly. There was no denying it now: Kaoru had never really grown up. “I work with the skaters, Sakurayashiki.” He grasped for any shred of patience that he could find. “That’s more than you can say. And if it really comes to the point where you can’t skate anymore, you’ll do whatever you can to stay involved, too.”

Seven years pre-canon, Shokichi Oka was injured as a result of Adam's effects on the Okinawan skateboarding community, and he hasn't skated since. After the events of episode 9, Kojiro goes to Oka with a request: to talk to Kaoru about recovery.
