Like You?

Summary:

Darth Vader and Luke have a conversation on the Death Star.

The dialogues were adapted from the play “Fences” written by August Wilson (1945-2005).

This short story is dedicated to James Earl Jones.

Work Text:

Death Star, Luke sees his father passing behind him, he doesn't look at his son, he's been like this since Luke came to live with Darth. Luke then goes after his father.

-Can I ask you a question?

Darth turns and looks directly at his son.

-Why didn't you ever like me?

-Like you? Who the hell said I have to like you? What law says I have to like you? You stand in front of me and ask such a stupid question! Come here, boy, when I talk to you. And straighten up, damn it! - Darth uses the force to bring Luke closer to him and straighten the boy's back. - Do you eat every day?

-Ah... Ah, y…

-Answer me when I talk to you. Do you eat every day?

-Yes...

-As long as you live under my roof you will put a "sir" at the end of your answer!

-Yes, sir.

-Do you have a roof over your head?

-Yes, sir.

-Do you have clothes?

-Yes, sir.

-Why do you have all this?

-Because of you, sir.

-I know it's because of me, but why do you think it is like that?

-Because you like me.

-Like you? I face meetings with the admirals, I have to put up with Tarkin, talk to the Emperor, see the works of the empire, kill some officers because of you. You are the biggest fool I have ever seen. It is my job! My responsibility! You live on my space station, lie in my bed, fill your belly with my food because you are my son, my flesh and blood, not because I like you! It is my duty to take care of you, my responsibility! Let's clear things up once and for all: I don't have to like you and I gave you everything. I gave you life! Your mother and I agreed on this between us and liking you was not part of that agreement. Don't spend your life worrying about whether people like you or not. Now get out of my sight.

Darth turned and walked away, leaving Luke speechless.

The end.
