Chloe gets shot while working the jewelry theft/homicide case on All About Eve (S4E4)

Work Text:

When Chloe found out who the real culprit was, everything went downhill. She finds herself lying on the floor with a gunshot wound on her belly.

"Chloe!" Lucifer shouted and he immediately ran to her and gathered her in his arms.

"No, no, no..." Lucifer panicked. "We have to get you to the hospital."

"I'm fine, Lucifer." Chloe coughs and Lucifer swore that if he sees her coughing blood, he will turn the entire place into a bloodbath and burn it into ashes.

"You have just been shot! Don't be stubborn, detective! If you die here, I'll die with you, do you understand that?!" Lucifer's voice almost thundered in the auction venue. Chloe slowly nods then grunts because of the pain. Lucifer dared to look at her bleeding stomach despite his worsening fear before carrying her.

"I can't afford to waste any second..." He said and Chloe immediately understood even if the pain almost pulls her to unconsciousness. He was about to flap his wings open but Chloe reached for his shoulder with all the strength she has left.

"D-don't fly me up, p-people will see your wings... I... I can't let them hurt you." Chloe struggled to speak.

Lucifer's eyes softened. She still cares about him. Even in her current situation, she's still determined to protect him.

"I don't care what happens to me. As long as you're safe." he told her as tears filled his eyes.

Chloe's hand moved from his shoulder to his cheek.

"Don't be stubborn." she whispered, using his own words against him. He shook his head, mind already made up.

"I guess I have to say no to you this time." He says before flapping his wings open and flying her out of that place.

He didn't see Eve crying at the sight. She decided to follow and be there for him anyway.

~~

"Lucifer!" Eve called as soon as she saw him at the hospital. She hugged him but he did not hug her back. He stood there frozen, like he was lifeless. Eve fought her tears as she slowly pulled back. She wanted to ask how he was but was too scared to hear how wrecked he was because Chloe's life is in danger.

"How is she?" she asked instead.

"The operation just started."

"She'll be okay, Lucifer. She's strong." she assured him.

"I know. But... I'm not strong enough for this." his voice broke.

Eve froze. Lucifer is crying. She never saw him cry before.

"She's always been stronger than me so what am I when she's inside that room fighting for her life?" he added in the most painful voice she ever heard in her entire existence. His tears fall and she couldn't even reach to dry them.

Eve was beyond stunned. She couldn't say a single word. She wanted to doubt if the person standing in front of her is really Lucifer but no, he is Lucifer.

Only he is not her Lucifer anymore.

"My lifeline is inside that room, Eve. If it stops, so does mine. If it ends, so do I."

He drops that bomb on her like she needed more clarity to realize that this man does not belong to her. He never did.

If you die here, I'll die with you, do you understand that?!

I don't care what happens to me. As long as you're safe.

She's always been stronger than me so what am I when she's inside that room fighting for her life?

My lifeline is inside that room, Eve. If it stops, so does mine. If it ends, so do I.

Lucifer Morningstar is in love with Chloe Decker.

He loves her so much to the point that he is willing to die for her.

He loves her so much to the point that if she dies, he will also cease to exist.

He loves her so much that he didn't even care if he said those words to her, his girlfriend. Like she's nothing.

Eve found herself staring at the operating room door as Lucifer slowly sat down.

Of course I am nothing. His everything is in there, and as much as it hurts, I don't want her to die because Lucifer will burn the entire world in return. Without her, there is no good and bad for him. He'll be merciless and cruel like he always was. What I always wanted him to be. But how will I live with him like that? He will exist like an empty vessel. No soul. No purpose.

No love.

Nothing, like me right now.

Eve sat beside Lucifer.

"If I could take you away right now and shield you from all these pain, I would. But I will never be the one you need, am I?" she asked even though she already knew the answer. Lucifer turned to her and she can see the guilt in his eyes.

"I'm sorry." he whispered.

"I just don't know what to do anymore. I came here for you." she tried her best not to cry but it happened still.

"I'm really sorry, Eve. I've tried. You know I've tried but it's just..." he stopped.

"It's just that you fell in love with someone else." she continued for him.

"Does she love you like you love her?"

Lucifer nodded. She didn't tell him but he felt it.

"She told me not to use my wings to fly her up because she doesn't want people to see and hurt me."

Eve smiled bitterly. Of course she was selfless even in that dangerous situation.

"But she did hurt you, right?"

"I don't care about that anymore. She can break me apart, shatter me to pieces and kill me herself. It doesn't change the fact that she is the only person who can fix me again."

Eve gaped at Lucifer. He related to her somehow, as his own words keep surprising him.

"I will help you to start over, with everything you need. You don't even have to move out yet until we can find a place for you to settle in."

"You don't have to. I can handle myself."

"But, Eve---"

"No buts, Lucifer. Your pity is the very last thing that I need right now. You've already been honest to me. Why pretend you still want me around when you would give your full attention to Chloe as soon as she wakes up?"

"You're right, I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure that you'll be alright."

"I will. It will take time but trust me when I say that I will not dare to come between the two of you again. I've seen and heard enough."

Lucifer was about to apologize again when Maze arrived.

"What happened?" Maze asked as she's near them. She quickly scanned Lucifer's face and he looks miserable which only means one thing.

Chloe.

She was certain before Eve even answered.

"Chloe got shot."

Maze felt the urge to behead the human who shot her.

"Shit. How is she?"

"She's being operated on, Maze. I think it will take hours." Lucifer answered.

"Okay. I'm sure you wouldn't leave even if I threaten you so do you want me to get you some food or change of clothes?"

"That's really nice of you Maze but I'm fine." he sounded exhausted, not even giving an effort to come up with a smart quip for the demon. Maze does it for him.

"Do you want your shitty face to be the first thing that Chloe sees when she wakes up?"

"Gee, thanks, Maze." he replied dryly.

"Ugh." Maze grumbled. "Just wash your freaking face, Lucifer. I'll call Dan to get you clothes and food. You said it will take hours. Chloe will have my head if you showed up to her a restless, miserable idiot."

"Fine. But if the doctors---"

"I will call you right away." she assured him.

Lucifer still hesitated for a bit.

"Lucifer." Maze warned.

"Alright, I'm going. Quit bossing me around." he sighs. Maze notices that he's really worn out so she thought of something to cheer him up even just a little.

"Right, you prefer Chloe bossing you around. And she will. Just be patient."

Lucifer did smile a little and nodded at Maze before he headed off.

"You okay?" Maze asked Eve. Eve tried to smile but Maze saw something else in her eyes that says the opposite.

"I'm not saying this because he's my friend but he really tried to make it work."

"I know. I just wished I had a fair chance. I met him first. Loved him first. Accepted him for who he truly is first. But none of those mattered. He's known her for four years and she's his entire world."

Maze sat on the chair beside Eve. She stared into the wall in front of her as she thought of Chloe.

"I never thought this would happen. We swore never to connect with any human, let alone fall in love. I can relate to you somehow when he refused to take me home because of her. Then I began to understand why he was so drawn to her. She's probably the kindest human being in this planet. She raised the most wonderful child. Forgave the biggest douche aka ex husband in the planet and managed to stay friends with him. Brought justice to every murdered human in Los Angeles. She's boring as hell but I will always have her back no matter how twisted our relationship is." Maze genuinely smiled, thinking about her happy memories with Chloe.

"Of course. She's a role model. I even tried to copy her. Imagine me, Eve, a goddess, imitating a human because my boyfriend is attracted to her. Turns out I can only go so far as the way she dresses and how she carries herself at work. Her intelligence and compassion is beyond reach." Eve sighed.

"I know she's amazing but you don't need to bring yourself down just to prove it."

"Lucifer cried, Maze."

Maze was stunned. She blinked thrice.

"Damn. I never saw him cry before."

"Neither did I, until earlier. He said she's his lifeline."

Maze huffs.

He's done for.

"I can't imagine feeling something that deep and powerful for someone." she said before finding herself looking at Eve.

~~

When Chloe woke up, she saw Lucifer sleeping on her hospital bed. She smiled and reached out to caress his hair. A few seconds later, he lifted his head and was greeted by her smiling face.

"Hey." she softly said.

"Detective." he breathed out. Lucifer sighed in relief then captured her hand in his hair. He kissed it so tenderly that Chloe fought the urge to cry.

"I'm so glad you're okay." he said as he held on to her hand.

"An angel saved me." she smiled at him.

"Interesting. Because a human saved me, she looks like an angel though." he returned her smile. Chloe went back to caressing his hair and he indulged her by leaning more into her touch.

"Do you need anything?"

"Just that angel."

Lucifer wanted to savor this moment, to be just that angel and stay by her side but he knows she needs to see someone more important.

"I also have an urchin outside." he said, talking about Trixie.

"Oh, yes. Please bring me the urchin."

"Coming right up, my lady." he gently kissed her forehead before standing up. She tugged his arm before he can take a single step. He turned to her, eyes asking.

"When I feel better, we'll talk, right?" she softly asked.

The same question replayed in his mind when he was with her at the hospital, after she was cured for the poison two years ago.

"Yes. We'll talk." he answered.

"Promise?"

Lucifer promised himself that he will never make the same mistake. Now he will keep the same promise to both of them.

"I promise." he assured her before he left to fetch the adorable little urchin waiting to be reunited with her mommy.

~~

Chloe's wound is healing and she can already sit up. She was watching TV when Lucifer came in with flowers on one hand and a brown paper bag on the other.

"Good morning, Detective."

"Good morning."

"For you."

Chloe happily received the flowers. They were lilies, her favorite.

"They're beautiful. Thank you, Lucifer." her eyes softened at him.

"My pleasure. How are you feeling?"

"Better. Hungry though."

"Well, we also have something for that." he reached for the flowers in her arms and carefully replaced it with the brown paper bag. Chloe excitedly opened it and her eyes widened as she pulled out what's inside.

"Grilled cheese! I missed eating this." she beamed at Lucifer.

"I know. I hope you like it, tried different recipes but the simplest one tasted the best so that's what I brought."

"You made these?" Chloe asked.

"Yeah."

"Thanks." Chloe opened the ziplock and had a bite of the diagonally sliced sandwich. After a few seconds of chewing, she turned to Lucifer, surprised.

"What do you think?"

She swallowed first before answering him.

"What do I think? You're such a natural chef! You have to teach me how to do this. They are soooo good." she munched again.

"Slow down, detective. They are all for you." Lucifer doesn't know if he would laugh because she was eating fast or he would smile because she loves the food he made for her.

And she looks so adorable. I will cook for her everyday.

He opened a bottled water and handed it to her.

"Ooh, thanks." she drank slowly, to Lucifer's relief. After drinking, Chloe was about to take another bite when she realized something. She stared at the sandwich and lightly bit her lower lip.

"What's wrong, detective?"

"You're spoiling me." she said, still looking at the sandwich.

"Yes, I am. Would you prefer if I don't spoil you?"

"No." Chloe reacts like a reflex and lifts her head to meet his gaze.

"I'm very happy that you're taking care of me. I'll be okay with this."

"Be okay with what, exactly?"

"With our situation. I know you're worried about me that's why you're doing this. But when I fully recover and everything goes back to normal... when we live our separate lives again, I want you to know that I'm very grateful that you did this. Of course, I'm still gonna visit you on Lux if you allow me."

What the bloody hell is she talking about?

"Did you hit your head, detective?" Lucifer asked.

"No, I didn't." she answered while shaking her head.

"So why would you assume that I'll be out of your life once you recover?"

Chloe opened her mouth to say something and closed it again when she didn't find the right words. A few seconds later, she settled with her unsettling fear.

"Because... you're mad at me." she muttered.

"Do I look mad to you?"

"No, not right now." she shook her head.

"If I'm mad at you, do you think I'll bring you flowers and food?"

"Maybe you're just being civil?" she asked innocently. Lucifer gasped, offended.

"I can't believe you. I picked out those flowers and cooked those bloody grilled cheese sandwiches myself and you think I'm just being civil?" he dramatically complained.

"Now, you're being mad." she pointed out.

"For the millionth time detective, I'm not mad. I'm just frustrated that you're acting like I don't care about you."

"I just..." Chloe bowed her head and sobbed. Lucifer almost crumbled. He hated seeing her cry.

"Can't get the image of what I did to you off my head... what if you really drank that poison? I'll never see you again." Chloe kept sobbing and crying.

Lucifer sighed and dried Chloe's tears.

"I didn't drink it. I'm okay. I'm here." he softly said.

"But I hurt you."

"I don't care. I've forgiven you as soon I held that bloody vial."

"But I was selfish and stupid."

"You were brave and brilliant. Most of all, beautiful."

"I almost killed you, Lucifer."

"You're the only one who can save me, Chloe."

Chloe looked at him like he is the one being unreasonable.

"What did I tell you before I passed out?"

"Don't be stubborn. What does that have to do with---" he huffed a breath, "Do you want me to keep being mad at you instead?"

"I just feel like I didn't deserve your mercy just yet."

"You feel like you don't deserve my mercy?" Lucifer laughed at the irony.

"Why are you laughing?" Chloe's brows furrowed.

"Detective, my mercy is nothing compared to what I am willing to give to you."

"Which is?"

"You mean which are."

"Go on. I have all the time in the world and I'm not going anywhere." she encouraged him, lips twitching for a smile.

Lucifer scoffed.

"Of course. You're in a hospital bed, my darling. I'd rather have you in my bed but that can wait."

Chloe blushed and Lucifer can't help but fall in love with her all over again.

"Let me just put it this way, Detective." he continued and stared intently into her eyes.

"I would bow down to you, kneel to you, I would worship you until there's nothing left of me. All you have to do is exist. You don't have to give me everything in return." he earnestly said.

Chloe's heart raced.

"I... I, uh..." she stammered.

Before Lucifer can melt because of her cuteness, he sighed and sandwiched her right hand with both of his.

"You need to rest."

"Seriously? You think I can rest after hearing that? That's more than enough to keep me awake for three days straight, Lucifer."

"Three days? Even Shakespeare can't come up with that. Give it a week." He teased.

"Ass." she rolled her eyes at him.

"I'm your ass. Wait, that sounds wrong."

Chloe laughed loudly. Like the way she laughed when he gave her the bullet necklace and said that if he couldn't penetrate her, he will commemorate the one where she penetrated him.

Oh, he will penetrate me. As soon as I get out of this hospital, he will.

Lucifer watched Chloe sober up and wiped the happy tears in her eyes. She is so happy and it's all because of him.

"I love you." Chloe told Lucifer with the most gorgeous smile that he has ever seen. The words registered in his mind then went straight to his heart. He smiled as he knew it would stay there forever. Bliss is not even enough to describe what he was feeling.

Chloe wasn't expecting anything. She's content that he had forgiven her, saved her, stayed with her and made her laugh again.

"I love you too, my darling. I love you very, very much." he said the words like they were the only ones he ever knew.

And when he said it back, she felt like she would be in an operation again because her heart stopped.

"Chloe?" he asked when she wasn't responding. Tears started forming in Chloe's eyes.

"My love?" he asked again. Chloe's tears fell as she lets out a relieved sigh. Lucifer also expressed his relief as he sighed and gathered her in his arms.

"You scared me there, I thought you were gonna pass out or something." he kissed her forehead before moving away a little.

"Almost. Now, I'd give that one a week." she beamed at him.

"Clever. But no, you will sleep and I'll just whisper them to you as you lay safe in my arms." he gave her a soft kiss on the lips.

"Perfect." she whispered on his lips.

It was bloody perfect, indeed.
