The Lie of Lille

Notes:

Chapter 1: ~ Chapter 1 ~

Chapter Text

Lille was grey that day, the overcast sky reflecting Adam’s state of mind. As the commander of the DIPJ, he was used to handling complex cases, cunning criminals, and endless investigations. But what he couldn’t manage were his feelings for Morgane.

Since their first date, everything had changed between them. Adam still remembered the kiss they shared at his home, the warmth of her lips, the spark in her eyes. It was that moment when everything could have shifted...

But Morgane, true to herself, had chosen to run. Worse, she betrayed him that very evening, shattering the fragile trust they had painstakingly built.

Adam resented her. He resented her for what she represented, for her inability to follow the rules, for her undeniable charm that made him vulnerable. But more than anything, he resented her for slipping into his heart and betraying him without a hint of apparent regret.

Morgane, on her side, knew she had crossed a line. Since their kiss, every interaction with Adam had been a struggle. She could see in his eyes that he was avoiding her, that he saw her differently. And it killed her. But Morgane, with her eccentric and elusive nature, preferred to face investigations rather than her own emotions.

When they found themselves working on a new case in Lille, the atmosphere between them was electric. Gazes were avoided, conversations were professional, but underneath, everything was simmering.

One evening, after a long day of chasing leads, they found themselves alone in the office, the tension palpable.

“Why, Morgane?” Adam asked abruptly, breaking the heavy silence.

She looked up at him, her heart racing. “Why what?”

“Why that kiss, and why betray me afterwards?” His gaze pierced hers, searching for an answer he hoped could ease his anger and hurt.

Morgane didn’t know what to say. She had never been good at expressing her feelings. She was good at solving crimes, playing with numbers, understanding puzzles... but not this. Not him.

“I... I don’t know, Adam,” she murmured, looking away. “I’m good at messing everything up, you know that.”

“That’s not an excuse, Morgane.” His voice was low, almost pleading. “You can’t keep running away when things get real.”

She looked at him again, and for the first time, she saw all the pain she had caused him. He was no longer just a colleague; he was a wounded man. A man she loved... but was too afraid to lose if she let her feelings take control.
