Work Text:
It had been a week since she had properly joined the Armed Detective Agency, but Kyouka thought she was settling in fine. Despite not meeting all of the agency members, they all seemed nice (-Dazai).
It was on this day that she had walked in the office, a certain blonde boy caught her attention. He seemed to radiate sunshine wherever he went.
‘This must be Kenji! The boy that Atsushi told me about. He said we might get along in our age similarities.’ Kyouka thought, watching the boy unpack a box. She might as well talk to him.
Kyouka took a step forwards, then another, walking over to the boy. She stopped right in front of the table that he was at, about to try and talk to him.
“Can I help you unpack that?” She asked quietly. Kyouka watched as Kenji stopped what he was doing to look at her. A smile formed on his freckled face as he responded.
“Kyouka right? You’re the new hire! Of course you can help! More hands makes a job easier.” Kenji was surprisingly easy to talk to, and he was exactly as Kyouka had heard. If sunshine was a person, then Kenji would be the best candidate.
Kyouka began to unpack the box, there wasn’t really a variety of objects in the cardboard. Mainly papers, files, books and more papers. Kyouka and Kenji managed to get it done faster than Kenji alone.
“Thanks for that Kyouka. I owe you one now!” Kenji commended, he was just too nice. Kyouka had to quickly brush off his offer.
“No, no it’s fine. Really! You don’t owe me anything, it was just unpacking a box.” At Kyouka’s words, Kenji’s smile didn’t falter an inch. It was impressive.
“That’s alright! Well, hope to see you around Kyouka!” Kenji’s upbeat response made Kyouka smile slightly. Seriously, who was Kenji?

The next time they would meet, would be in the Cafe Uzumaki. Kyouka was on her break, and decided to check out the cosy cafe on the office’s first floor.
They employees were extremely nice, the waitress took her order with no complaints so Kyouka was just sitting there. She looked out of the window, the streets bustling with people. Old people, young people, tall people and short people. People of all kinds, just doing what they love.
Kyouka was so immersed in people-watching that she didn’t notice a certain blonde sit down at her booth.
“Hi Kyouka! People watching I see.” Kenji’s voice snapped her out of her bubble. Looking up at the blue-eyed detective, she gave a small smile. Kenji’s smile was infectious, but this infection, she didn’t mind. Kyouka nodded in response. Letting Kenji continue talking for her.
“People watching is so interesting isn’t it? You never know what kind of person you might see. One of these people could be an ability user! We never had this many people out in the countryside, we all knew each other and…”
Kyouka listened to every word he had to say, learning about how knowing everyone was a good thing. Both of their attentions were swayed over to the waitress who had arrived with Kyouka’s drink. Kyouka nodded a thank you before the waitress turned to leave. But before she did, the employee addressed the two of them.
“So, are you two on a date of some kind?” Kyouka blinked. What? Kenji answered for her. “No ma’am, I’m just accompanying Kyouka on her break!”
The waitress tilted her head in confusion. “But what about your strings? They’re connected. Are you sure you’re not on a date?”
The strings. Kyouka had long forgotten about the red fibre that connected her and her soulmate together. She looked down at hers, and sure enough, Kenji was at the end of it. Kyouka’s face turned slightly red at this. How had she not realised!? Kenji simply let out a laugh at this. Kyouka guessed that he had no idea either.
They were both clueless teenagers, who had no ideas about love. And yet they were each other’s soulmate.
