Work Text:

Suguru should’ve known not to trust Toji. His friends was a bastard, of course he would pull something like this.

It was supposed to be a concert of some random indie band, you know, a fun night out. But when the lights went dark and he walked in on stage, Suguru’s world stopped.

“How are you guys enjoying the night?” his voice sounded from the speakers.

He looked just like Suguru remembered, but also somehow different. Suguru couldn’t take his eyes off him, no matter how hard he tried. It’s been so long since he’s seen him.

“This song is really special to me. It’s called Home, hope you enjoy!” he said, flashing the crowd one of his stupid grins.

As soon as the first words left his mouth, Suguru knew he had to get out. Suddenly, he felt like he couldn’t breathe. The crowd around him cheered and sang along to the song while Suguru couldn’t process what was happening.

It was too much. It was too much. He had to get out.

Suguru turned around and started making his way through the crowd. He could faintly hear Toji laughing in the background but the ringing in his ears was much louder. The crowd gave him nasty stares as he tried to make his way through them and out of the venue, but he didn’t care, he needed out. He needed to get away from him.

As he pushed past the people, he could hear his voice hitch mid song and stop singing. The music stopped and the crowd looked around in confusion.

“Suguru?”

Fuck.

Suguru kept making his way out of the venue, not daring to look back. He heard some commotion behind him, but he didn’t stop until he was out.

The cold night air hit him like a ton of bricks as he exited the venue. He slid down the side of the building, resting his head against the cold brick wall and closing his eyes.

This couldn’t be happening.

Suguru was never supposed to see him again. It was enough that he had to hear him on the radio or see him on the news. He couldn’t… he couldn’t see him in person again, not after everything.

The door of the venue burst open. Suguru sighed, expecting to see smug Toji standing there, ready to tease him, but when he opened his eyes, he froze.

“It was you,” he whispered in disbelief.

Suguru stopped breathing. He looked around panicked as if for an escape route. This wasn’t happening.

“What are you doing here? I thought you never wanted to see me again,” he asked quietly, taking a careful step towards Suguru.

Suguru couldn’t make a word out. There were so many thoughts racing inside his head, and he couldn’t voice a single one.

“Are you not going to talk to me?” he whispered, taking another careful step towards Suguru.

“Satoru,” Suguru finally said, his voice cold and harsh as he stood up from the cold hard ground.

Satoru shuddered, “you have no idea how much I’ve longed to hear you say my name again,” he mumbled shakily.

Suguru didn’t have an answer for that, he didn’t know what to say. This was too much for him.

“What are you doing here?” Satoru asked again after a moment of silence, his voice hopeful.

“Doesn’t matter, I’m leaving anyway,” Suguru mumbled, turning on his heel to leave.

Satoru’s hand shot up and grabbed Suguru’s wrist tightly. Suguru paused, turning around to look at Satoru’s pleased expression.

“Please,” Satoru whispered, “don’t go. Can… can we talk?”

Suguru scoffed. “What is there to talk about?”

“Please,” Satoru begged, “please, just… just hear me out. I know I don’t deserve it but ple—“

“You’re right, you don’t,” Suguru cut him off coldly.

Satoru went quiet after that. It was clear from his expression that he was teying his hardest to find the right words to get through to Suguru, to convince him to stay. He couldn’t let him leave, not when he finally had a chance to see him after all these years. Not when he was the only thing Satoru thought about every waking moment since he left him.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m just asking you, begging you, to hear me out. You’ll never have to see me again, I promise, just give me a chance to talk to you, please, Suguru.”

Suguru scoffed. This was a bad idea. Scratch that, this was the worst idea of all the bad ideas, but… something in him wanted to hear him out.

“…you have ten minutes.”

Satoru breathed out shakily, finally letting go of Suguru’s wrist. “Thank you.”

Suguru took a step away from him, needing some distance between them. Satoru didn’t comment on it, even though he wanted nothing more than to hold Suguru’s hand again.

“I just… I wanted to say how sorry I am. I should’ve… I should’ve never left you behind,” Satoru started, his voice shaky with emotions, “I was young and stupid, and I didn’t know what I had until I lost you and I… I regret it every single day.”

“Is that it?” Suguru asked coldly, his face showing no emotions.

Satoru paused as he blinked a few times. He was clearly expecting a different reaction. “I—“

“I’m sorry for leaving? That’s all you have to say? Nothing about how you cheated on me?!” Suguru spat out. All the emotions he was repressing for years came rushing to the surface. All the rage, all the resentment and anger… He couldn’t stop it anymore.

Satoru blinked. “Cheated?! What are you talking about?”

Suguru scoffed, “Don’t play dumb! You know exactly what you did! You think I’m fucking stupid?! As if I haven’t seen the news of you and your bandmate?!”

“Bandmate? What are you— Sukuna?!” Satoru spluttered incredulously.

“Yeah! You two were all over the news when it happened!” Suguru snapped. He was trying his hardest not to yell but his resolve was snapping quickly.

“You would believe some rumours over me?! Nothing happened between me and him!” Satoru yelled. It seemed he too was losing his cool.

“Well, what was I supposed to believe?!” Suguru finally snapped, yelling at the other. “You left me alone to go on your tour! You barely texted me or called me for months and the next thing I see is you on the news holding hands while leaving some bar!” Suguru yelled angrily. He took a deep breath to try and calm himself down before speaking again. “I waited for you, Satoru. I was willing to wait for you for as long as it took because Iloved you and I wanted to support your dream but then you—“

“Stop!” Satoru yelled suddenly, cutting him off.

Suguru blinked in surprise, not expecting that reaction from him.

“Just… stop,” Satoru said shakily. “I would never cheat on you, Suguru. I love you! You were the best thing that ever happened to me, why on earth would I ever cheat on you?”

Satoru closed the distance between them, taking Suguru’s face into his hands and staring at him intently. Suguru’s eyes widened at the action, and he froze, not knowing what to do.

“You have no idea how much I regret going on that stupid tour. If I could go back in time I would stay. I’d never leave you again because… because losing you was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Because every night I lay awake in bed wishing I could take it back. I would exchange everything I have in a heartbeat just to have you back,” Satoru said, looking Suguru in the eyes in the process.

Suguru stood there stunned. He didn’t know how to react to the bomb Satoru just dropped on him.

“B-but I saw the photos! You—“

“Yeah, we were holding hands, that much is true, but only because he was drunk off his ass. The news like to make a story out of everything! Please, you have to believe me! I would never cheat on you! I’d rather die than to do that to you, I love you!”

Second time’s apparently the charm because Suguru finally processed his words.

“You… you love me?” Suguru whispered incredulously. “Even after all this time?”

“Especially after all this time!” Satoru nodded. “I never stopped loving you and I don’t think I ever will. Fucking hell, all my songs are about you, about us. I still play the songs I write for you on my shows, praying to all the gods to lead you back to me.”

“I… I don’t know what to say,” Suguru whispered, his voice shaky.

This was too much. He didn’t know what to think or feel. All this time he felt so much anger… was it all for nothing?

“You don’t have to say anything,” Satoru said, “just… just know that I’m so, so sorry for leaving you behind, for not putting in the effort I was supposed to. For everything.”

Satoru studied Suguru’s face intently before taking a step back, finally letting go of his face. He looked on the ground, taking a deep breath.

“Do you… do you think you could ever forgive me?” he asked quietly, not daring to meet Suguru’s eyes.

Suguru looked away, “I don’t know,” he mumbled.

Satoru visibly deflated at that, but he nodded in understanding.

“But I’m willing to try.”

Satoru’s head snapped up to look at Suguru, his eyes wide. “Really?”

Suguru sighed, “Just… just promise not to leave again, okay?”

“I promise! I-I’ll do anything, I promise!” Satoru quickly nodded. He couldn’t believe his ears; he couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

“Maybe we could… go for some coffee tomorrow? To catch up?” Suguru suggested quietly, looking back at Satoru who smiled at him brightly.

“…that would be nice.”
