Chapter 1: The Not-So-Calm Before The Storm

Chapter Text

A pressure resided in his chest, pushing down on his lungs and making it hard to breath; At first, he had suspected he was having another asthma flair up, or that his body wasn’t quite yet completely recovered from the attack at the Noahs Arc Circus. That was quickly abolished when he coughed up a handful of blood into his palm.

____________

Ciel slumped down on his bed, hoping that a good nights sleep would purge the fresh memories of what transpired at Baron Kelvins estate. Images of the alter table and the pews arranged around the cages made his stomach swirl, which along with the odd painful pressure he was suddenly feeling in his chest made the idea of sleep all the more enticing.

Sebastian had dressed him in his sleep attire, and pulled the covers up to his shoulders, before bowing politely and leaving the room, closing the door behind him.

Ciel sighed, resting his head back against the pillows, the pain around his lungs was worsening, and before long he broke off into a fit of coughing that left him doubled over on his side, mouth pressed into the crook of his arm as he tried to muffle the deafening rasps. His throat burned and his lungs spasmed uncomfortably. This felt different to his asthma attacks; like his own ribs were choking him and his lungs were trying to force their way up through his trachea, it was more than unpleasant, and with the harsh coughing came the involuntary gagging that had his eyes watering and his mouth full of saliva that dripped through his fingers as he tried to relieve the awful feeling. It took all of five minuets for the coughing to stop, and when it did, Ciel was lay splayed against the bed, face drenched in sweat and saliva that had found its way out from behind his lips. He felt like he couldn’t breathe no matter how hard he gasped for air, tuning his face up and greedily gulping in the cool air, wincing as his throat burned and crackled as he gasped.

He hadn’t even noticed that he wasn’t alone when Sebastian’s slender hands reached around his waist and pulled him upright against the back of the bed.

“Breath, master” He instructed, voice smooth and soothing as he had practiced it to be.

Ciel choked, involuntary tears streamed from his watery eyes as he continued struggling for breath.

“Dear, dear, whatever is the matter My Lord?” Ciel tried to growl and pull himself away from the demon, but only succeeded in sending his throat into another fit of spasms and another bout of coughs that while not lasting as long as previously, seemed to sap any remaining energy he had left, and he had no choice but to collapse against Sebastian and splutter and gasp for breath, limbs limp and slick with sweat.

“Young Lord, try to breath in slowly, deep breaths, there we go” Distantly, Ciel felt a hand reach under his shirt and lay itself on his back, Sebastians palm was cold and as much as Ciel loathed the contact, it made his desperate search for oxygen a little easier, and after a struggle, he found he could breath somewhat normally again.

“There we go, that’s it, well done” Sebastian’s voice was calming and Ciel found solace in it, much as he hated to admit to himself.

“hah- wha- what was tha-“ A single gag cut of the end of his sentence, and to attempt at keeping his dinner down, Ciel closed his mouth reluctantly.

“I am not quite sure master, I apologise, if I were to guess I would say you are still not completely cured from your previous bout of sickness from your asthma” Ciel knew better, he had experienced plenty of asthma attacks as a boy, and none had felt remotely like this, but he couldn’t bring himself to challenge the demon.

“I believe it is in your best interest to rest for the new couple of days, if this continues I shall call for your physician, and ask that he examine you”

Ciel just nodded, his body and mind were exhausted, he wanted nothing more than to sleep and wake feeling refreshed, without the achy throat and burning lungs. “For now, however, I think you would benefit from a good nights sleep, here” Ciel absolutely agreed. With that said, Sebastian helped Ciel lay back down, and before pulling up the sheets, lay a cool damp cloth over Ciels chest. It took less that ten seconds for the boy to fall into a deep sleep.

Little did boy and Demon know, this was just the beginning, and that tonight hadn’t even scratched the surface of what was to come.
