Farmer [74]

Summary:

Its all well and good naming your kid [74] to make a quick buck; surely she won't hate that fact years later right?

Notes:

For whatever reason, I found myself thinking of "Farmer that's named with an Item ID code and fucking hates it" out of nowhere. So I just had to write a quick thing for it.

Work Text:

Rainbow slung her backpack off with a groan, hoisting open the lid of her shipping bin before tossing yet another handful of Prismatic Shards into it. To most people in the Ferngill Republic they were some of the rarest gems known to man; but to her, they were as common as dirt (moreso even, considering how often she found herself needing to tear up the beach in search of clay).
Somehow, be it by some act of Yoba or just a cruel joke, her parents had opted to officially name her [74] (to this day she STILL didn’t understand just how the fuck they’d gotten away with that), which had somehow led to one of the gems just appearing in her pocket whenever anyone said it. Clearly they’d just wanted to make a quick buck at her expense, considering the first thing they did when she moved out and got her job at Joja was to retire and fuck off to the Fern Islands, leaving her to deal with the consequences of their short sightedness.

“Feh!” She spat as she dropped the last shard into the bin and slammed the lid shut. She’d been hoping that moving out to the valley, taking up her grandpa’s will, would finally let her escape from it and start anew. But despite her having introduced herself as Rainbow (a nickname she’d chosen for herself thanks to how much she saw that pattern of colours), it seemed like everyone in town somehow knew her legal name and INSISTED on calling her as such. As a result, she STILL found her pockets constantly loaded with Prismatic Shards whenever she dared to interact with any of the villagers, which she’d often throw back in their faces (except for Haley, who looked like she was about to throw up at the mere sight of the Shards). Whenever they refused her “gift”, claiming she was being “too generous”, she’d just throw them into her shipping bin and let the Mayor deal with it.

Despite the money she raked in as a result, Rainbow found herself hating it. Part of her reason for moving to the farm (besides her dashed hope in actually being called by a name that made sense) was to earn her paycheck in a fulfilling way, rather than the soul crushing monotony of her Joja office work. And yet, a good 80% of her income had been from selling those cursed shards, rather than the farm work she poured her sweat and blood into.
Despite that, she couldn’t bring herself to just trash the gems, opting to instead stash the payouts from them into a savings account. Eventually she’d find a use for the money that she could justify taking the easy way out for…

Rainbow grumbled to herself as she picked her backpack back up and walked up the stairs to the farmhouse, shoving the door open and tossing the pack onto the floor. She sat on her bed and kicked off her boots, reaching over and briefly turning the TV on to check the weather for the next day before pulling the sheets up over herself; closing her eyes and letting an early night’s sleep claim her.
