Responsibility

Summary:

Frisk suggests they adopt a kitten together after they need to foster some. Gaster sees that the player is gone and is finally accepting that the resets aren't happening. But his anxiety makes him fall for something else... can he really handle another responsibility after he butchered the last one so badly?

Work Text:

"Frisk wanted to see us..." Asgore shuffles through his papers as Gaster worked, he had been focused on the improvements on the core. He hadn't really been listening to Asgore until he remembers the human that rescued him from his fate.

"Frisk huh..." Gaster mutters.

"Hm?"

"(Nothing... it's just that... I thought they would have moved out by now...)" Gaster frowns. Things between monsters and humans seem to be stabilizing with the help of Frisk, it only took them a day according to the news and it seems that most humans forgot what the power of determination could do. That was one thing they had the advantage over the humans at least... it seemed that no one but Frisk had determination... yet...

So far there were only three recorded incidents of the red soul...

"Gaster? Gasterrrr, Gaster?" Asgore asks. Gaster has no idea how long has it been since he was calling him but ever since that day at the picnic, he seems to be rather soft-spoken. Gaster had to be rather embarrassed to realise that he is treating him a lot like Toriel.

"(Sorry... I was just thinking about how far we have come)" Gaster signs, trying to smile naturally but his expression seems distorted.

Asgore blinks before smiling back, "Yes we have come very far... would you like to follow me? I'd like you to choose which one we were going to adopt... it might be a big thing after all... having someone to care for..."

"(I'm sorry?)"

"Unless you don't want it?" Asgore asks nervously, "I mean if you don't want to then I'll just tell Frisk-"

Gaster waves his hands with a sign, Asgore looks a lot like a kicked puppy, "(No that's not it... I was just... I missed what you were saying a few seconds ago... I was just-)" he gestures to the papers.

"Right! Of course!" Asgore chuckles, "Well one of Frisk's neighbour's cats had just gotten a litter recently and Frisk has been offering some monsters the kittens just to show that we can take care of something so fragile- um..."

Gaster's face pales at that notion, he only noticed it when Asgore looked worried about him.

Gaster feels bad immediately and turns around.

"I really don't mind... we can get a fish or a turtle if it would be easier..." Asgore shuffles to find his phone. He just wanted Gaster to be happy and seeing those cat videos Papyrus would send him makes him want to adopt one... well he also sent him a video of a pet alligator and he wants one too but... the humans staying nearby would be more inclined to steer clear of their house than they already have.

"(no... I'm fine with a kitten...)" Gaster signed in front of Asgore, "(Just not a dog will do or I'll never hear the end of making bones every time they want to play...)" Gaster muses.

The sight would be kind of cute though... Asgore thinks as he messages Frisk. Maybe some other time...

Gaster hadn't expected Frisk to invite them over... he had no reason to doubt the human but his own pessimistic mind, so when he arrives to see Frisk... well... just Frisk... his brain practically short-circuited.

"Are you okay? Gaster dear?" Toriel asks in worry, even one of the kittens pawed up to him, noticing that he was feeling unwell. It is a small creature, with grey fur and a little brain. It would be like taking care of a child his whole life... would he be able to bear that responsibility?

"Gaster, you need not worry, as unreliable as Asgore is, you can always figure it out together," Toriel beams. Asgore looks at Toriel with a wrongly accused kind of expression. "I believe you will do a great job," Toriel adds softly as she carries up the kitten at his feet and passes it on to him. His arms just simply hold them in a way that feels... awkward... but the kitten looks comfortable enough to curl into his arms even though Gaster didn't think it would be as comfortable as it would be in a human's or Asgore's arms.

"She's beautiful..." Asgore croons.

Gaster looks down at the sleeping kitten. Asgore wanted Gaster to name it but he couldn't really be bothered with finding a name for her, he never had to name anything before in his life after all. So Asgore got to call her Kitty... although he might have misunderstood the term 'nickname' and Gaster was fine with it until a bunch of cats came up to him when he called for the Kitten when they brought her to a playground when she proved too energetic to be cooped up in the house all day.

And Gaster thought they were a lazy type of pet.

But that could be furthest from the truth, Kit, her new name now, is more like a dog... she loves playing with his bones especially. He was slightly worried that he might accidentally hurt the cat but his worry was unfounded when she snatched the bone midair while he was trying to test if his bones were safe for her.

Kit is one energetic ball of fun and looking at Asgore and Kit playing while he worked is a nice view to look to when he was taking a break.

Gaster hadn't realised this when Kit got sick because she licked a poorly disposed cigarette from the floor so it made him take fewer cigarette breaks inside the house, whether he took it outside or none at all. But Kit was good for him, the heart attack was enough to bring Gaster out from his work too.

"I'm not mad at you... I'm just glad that you learned from it and are getting better," Asgore smiles patting Gaster on the shoulder reassuringly, even Kit doesn't stray far from her favourite human. Mainly because he does feed her a lot of treats... although that really puts a dampener on Asgore's plan on giving her treats only during training.

But so long as Kit was safe and happy, who was to say anything to them?
