Work Text:
When an Angel that is not strong enough is confronted by something like a demon it leaves them in pain. A striking feeling that reminds them of death . Finn can’t remember how she dies, but some full body freeze runs through her, and it burns.
She’s gotten used to it, as much as she could. For God, and for Maron, she has to do her job! Find demons and send the girl after them…
But there’s a deeper fear when she stares at this demon. A fear she can’t control. Something closer…
Pulled from her?
Finn collapses and thinks about curling up next to Maron in bed even though it means getting buried in the morning and her words. Matchless and marvelous. Energetic and fearless.
If only Finn had been…
She wakes up to other people in the room, and she cannot escape, and she cannot communicate. Unfair. Cruel. Terrifying.
But more importantly, she wakes up to Maron. Maron calling her. For that, she can do anything. Everything. For Maron…
She sends out a beam, and she prays. Maron. Running around the park trying to save them. Trying to capture the demon. Maron and her big, warm brown eyes that never really hide her sadness, or her anger, or how much she cares and works hard.
Maron. Her Maron…
(She prays not to god but to her partner, and she manages to send it to her.)
The cage breaks and still leaves her trapped, and Maron saves her.
They win.
(Finn thinks about a sword that fills her with fear and a stabbing ice still easing from her bones, and she shudders.)
Finn stays close to Maron. The day is had, and fun. Access keeps peaking from around corners, but he doesn’t say anything. Good. Finn doesn’t have time for the devil’s little messenger to mix her up and confuse her.
(Everything feels wrong, and she doesn’t know why, and is this the end? It feels like something is coming.
She’s beginning to feel like she doesn’t remember when or how she came to earth.)
It’s amazing, and it’s fun. Even if Finn can’t participate directly, she cheers at the show of it all. She slips home with Maron and her friends.
When they get home, Finn curls into a corner of the couch. Maron sits next to her and gently rubs her back.
“You okay, Finn?” She asks.
“Yeah!” Finn says. “Everything is fine now!”
“You sure?” Maron asks. Finn sits up, nods. “…Finn, you’re shaking.”
“…I am?” Finn asks. But it’s true. There’s a tremble in her body. Something isn’t right.
Maron offers her hand. Finn jumps into it and lets her partner pulls her close. She’s so warm, and her heartbeat is even and slow.
“You’re always getting yourself into situations,” Maron says. “What would you do without me?”
Two identical flashes. A knife.
LET GO LET GO LET GO—
Finn flinches, then she curls closer to Maron. She can’t remember what scared her.
“I… hey, wait! I did this to help you!” Finn says. She pouts. “Access was also there and he figured it out before me. Who was I to expect being put in a cage? ”
“It still made it harder to sneak in when I had to chase Jeanne’s power!” Maron says. “But… you did it. You knew almost exactly where I was.”
Finn blinks.
“Really?” She asks. “I guess…”
She thinks.
I prayed to you today, not god.
Too blasphemous to say.
“I bet if you work hard enough, you’ll awaken Jeanne’s powers all on your own, one day,” Finn says. “It’s not about me.”
“Of course it is,” Maron says. “I’m only Jeanne if I have you with me.”
Finn feels the tears in her eyes.
“Maronnnnn!” She whines, hugging her. “I’ll come back even when we’re done. I promise.”
Whenever that is.
(Somehow… it feels far too soon.)
They spend the rest of the night all but tied together. Finn wouldn’t want it any other way.
