Robin looked down at his soggy cereal with a frown. He had been sitting here for quite awhile. It had been a long night for him. He hadn't gotten much sleep. He had to be out here and setting a good example for the other. The Titans East were over visiting for a few days too. He didn't want them to think he was an incompetent leader.
He looked up as Speedy entered the room. The Titans East has decided to come visit and take a small vacation. They had some other honorary titans tower sitting for them.
The archer looked up at him, arching a brow under his mask. He knew what he was silently asking. The two of them had history. They had grown up together in the league before they branched off on their own, only to end up on a team of their own again. This time it had been on their own terms.
They had been hanging out the last few days. They were getting to know one another again. It was so nice to have some down time and hang out. Starfire had hosted a movie night. Cyborg had taken the others around town to show them the cool spots. Beast Boy made them dinner a few night, highlighting how good vegan food could be.
Robin and Speedy had been hanging out and getting to know each other again. Robin enjoyed spending time with him. It made him feel like a piece of his childhood back. Being around Speedy again was strange. He got this fluttering in his stomach. Speedy could make him laugh or just lift his mood. It was nice they were around for the week.
"Of course your up already," Speedy said as he sat down next to Robin.
"I have to be up," Robin said, "I'm the team leader and I'd be setting bad example if I didn't get up before everyone else and besides Beast Boy would never let me hear the end of it if I over slept.”
"Robbie you have to relax," Speedy said laughing and nudging the raven haired teen.
"Don't call me that," Robin sighed, annoyed. He knew Speedy only used the name to annoy him.
"You gotta relax Robbie," Speedy replied, emphasizing the nickname Robin just rolled his eyes at him
"How can I when you’re around, annoying me?" Robin asked, playfully.
"Ooh, Birdie's got talons," Speedy laughed making claws with his hands.
"Sorry, I'm just a little tired," Robin apologized.
"You are so uptight you know that right?" Speedy asked leaning in closer to the other boy. "You're starting to be a lot like you know who."
"And your annoying you know that don't you?" Robin countered, elbowing the arching in the side. He shot him a glare too.
"You need to get out more," Speedy said.
"I go out all the time," Robin said.
"As Robin or as Dick?" Speedy asked.
"What's the difference?" Robin asked.
"So Robin then," Speedy sighed, shaking his head. "After your morning training I am taking you to the mall, no communicators the team can handle things, I mean the Titans East are here so they can help. You are gonna have some real fun," Speedy said.
"And if l refuse," Robin asked.
"I'll kidnap you," Speedy said.
"You're bluffing," Robin said.
"Am I?" Speedy asked.
Robin paused as the living room doors swooshed open. Raven and Beast Boy entered the room. Raven took a step away putting just a little distance between her and the changeling. Everyone already suspected something was going on with the pair, but he wouldn't push them. They would tell them eventually.
"Raven, Beast Boy I'm kidnapping your leader later," Speedy said, "you guys can do with out him for a few hours?" he said.
"Just have him back by midnight," Beast Boy said as he walked over to the refrigerator and started to rummage for food.
"Unharmed," Raven added as she looked at Robin.
"Traitors," Robin said shocked at how easy they gave him up.
"Of course," Speedy said grinning.
Robin made sure to go over every drill today in training. He wasted as much time as he could. He was avoiding Speedy for a little bit. As much as he loved having the archer around, old feelings were starting to return. His stomach would flutter around the archer.
He was starting to remember why he had pushed Speedy away and left that life behind. Here with the Titans he could embrace that side of himself. The main Titans all knew he was bisexual and accepted him. he was thankful to have great friends like them. He could never tell Speedy though. He did not want to risk their rekindled friendship.
He made his way to the living room where he knew Speedy was waiting. He was watching TV with Aqualad and Starfire. He looked Speedy over. He was wearing a red short sleeved t-shirt and tight skinny jeans that hugged him in all the right places.
Speedy grinned once he saw him. Robin’s stomach flipped at that. Speedy excused himself from the other two. He ran over to Robin, thay cocky smirk still in place.
"You gonna come quietly or do I have to use force," Speedy asked.
"I'll come quietly," Robin said, putting his hands up.
"Well then, let's go have some fun," Speedy said. He grabbed Robin's arm and led him to the tower's garage.
"How are we getting into town?" Robin asked.
"I thought we'd take your bike," Speedy said pointing to the black Harley that Robin kept in the garage.
He only used it when he went out as Dick Grayson, not Robin the Boy Wonder. Dick nodded and walked over to it. It had been awhile since he had even left the tower as himself. Roy followed him. Dick grabbed his helmet and handed Roy a spare.
Dick looked at his bike. This was the one thing he had taken from Gotham. He had more back there waiting for him, but this was his baby.
“She’s gorgeous,” Roy said, startling him.
“Yeah,” Dick said.
"Come on, let’s go,” Roy said.
He got on his bike, smiling as he settled against her. Roy got on behind him and they left.
They arrived at the city mall several minutes later. Roy got off the bike and Dick chained it up along with their helmets. Together they walked into the mall.
"Ok now we are here to have fun and just be ourselves," Roy said.
“Thanks for the reminder, I totally forgot why we were here,” Dick said sarcastically.
“Ok asshole,” Roy laughed.
They walked around with Roy leading Duck into stores. Roy led them into a Halloween pop up shop. Dick hadn’t realized Halloween was so close. They would find the craziest costume for the other. They would laugh and move on to another crazy costume.
Roy eventually found the Adventure Zone, and arcade that had severa games and even a bowling alley and laser tag. Roy dragged Dick around to all the games. Eventually he talked him into bowling.
“So are you having fun?" Roy asked once they finished their game. They exited the arcade.
"Actually yes I am," Dick replied with a smile as they walked along.
"Good, you’re starting to look like the Dick I used to know,” Roy said with a smile.
“Yeah? And I didn’t before?” Dick asked.
"Yeah, youre the most relaxed I’ve seen you in days,” Roy said smiling. He looked Dick up and down his smile growing.
Dick’s eyes roamed over Roy in return. He wasn’t sure what to say to that. The only reason he had been uptight was because he was avoiding his feelings for the archer. He hadn’t really thought about this afternoon as they were just having fun.
“Look a photo booth," Roy said, pointing beyond Dick.
Dick smiled and grabbed Roy's hand. He dragged him over to the booth. He put some money in and pulled Roy in.
"Isn't this a little childish?" Roy asked as he slid into the booth with Dick laughing. He wanted this as much as Dick did.
"Who cares,” Dick said as he stared at the machine. “Smile,' Dick said.
"Smile," a computerized voice said. Roy looked up at the camera and smiled.
"Funny face," Dick commanded. They both scrunched up their noses and crossed their eyes. Laughing as they realized they did the same thing.
Roy looked at Dick as he made another face. Roy then smirked and put two fingers up behind Dick's head as the third picture was taken.
"Two more," the computerized voice said.
Roy grabbed Dick and leaned in, kissing him on the cheek. Dick tensed up, surprised. Roy pulled back and looked at Dick scared.
"I'm sorry I don't know what came over me," Roy said.
"If your gonna kiss someone you do it like this," Dick said. He placed his hand on the back of Roy's neck and guided the archer to his lips. The kiss was slow and passionate. The last picture snapped as Roy's hands found their way into Dick's spiky black hair. Dick pulled away and looked Roy in the eyes. he could not believe he had just done that.
"Your pictures are complete," the computerized voice said.
Dick jumped and looked to the tray where their picture strip sat. He grabbed them and stood up.
He snatched the strip and exited the booth. His mind was racing a million miles a minute. He wasn’t sure what to do.
“Dick, stay with me,” Roy said, grabbing his hand.
Dick paused looking up at the archer. He was at a loss for words. He looked around at the people around him.
"I-I think we should go," Roy said taking in Dick’s panic, "I mean somewhere we can talk," he added quickly.
Dick nodded and pocketed the pictures. He led Roy out to his bike. He unchained it and gave Roy his helmet.
"Wh-where do you wanna go?" Dick asked.
"Wherever you want, just don’t leave me again," Roy said.
Dick nodded and got onto his bike Roy did the same. Dick just started driving. His mind was reeling. What had just happened? Was that real? Did Roy actually like him?
Even if Roy did like him, there was no way they could actually date. They both had their duties to their own teams. They lived in very different parts of the country. It just wouldn’t work.
They ended up just outside the city to a cliff that overlooked the whole bay. He got off his bike and he walked to the edge of the cliff and sat down. Roy joined him.
"I'm not gonna beat around the bush Dick," Roy said, nudging him.
"You never have before," Dick replied, his eyes on the water. He waited for Roy to say what he needed to hear.
"I like you a lot," Roy said.
"I like you a lot too," Dick said.
"I mean as more than a friend," Roy said, “I have for a long time Dick. I just…I never knew how to tell you and after everything that happened when I left Ollie, and…”
“I know,” Dick said.
“I practically owe you my life Dick, if you hadn’t found me when you did and got me back to Ollie, I don’t think I’d be here today,” Roy admitted.
“I heard what happened and I wanted to see if I could help a friend,” Dick replied, “though I must admit I did have feelings for you back then too.”
“Same, so maybe we can make up for lost time,” Roy asked.
"Roy, you’ve come a long way and I’m proud of you and I want to, like really really want to, but we can’t,” Dick said.
"Why not?" Roy asked confused
"Roy we're heroes and we live in two different cities," Dick said, "it just wouldn't work.” His eyes were glued to the water below. He knew if he looked at Roy his resolve would break.
"So we'll make it work," Roy said, reaching out for his hand. "I really think this could work if we give it a chance," he said.
"You think so?” Dick asked.
"Yes I do," Roy said.
Dick looked up at the archer. He didn’t see an ounce of a lie on his face. He knew Roy truly believed they could make this work. He wanted to believe it too.
“Get out of that head of yours Dick,” Roy said. He leaned in closer to him. “Don’t think with your head, follow your heart.”
“This is stupid,” Dick said.
Before Roy could reply he leaned in kissing him again. Roy smiled into the kiss, his hands coming up to his face trying to pull him closer.
They parted, smiling at one another. Dick reached into his pocket pulling out the photos.
"Keep them," Roy said, "as a reminder of the day Dick came back," he said.
"I never left," Dick said.
"Yeah you did, you lost yourself to the Boy Wonder and you know it," Roy said.
"Yeah," Dick said as he looked down at the pictures. Roy was right.
"So, how does this Friday work for you?" Roy asked.
"For what?" Dick asked, confused.
"A date," Roy said.
"But you leave tomorrow," Dick said.
"It's only a four hour drive," Roy said waving a hand, "and you're worth it," he said blushing.
“Ok, it’s a date,” Dick said smiling at him.
