Notes:

Work Text:

Kurumi lay flat on the bed in the nurse’s office. There was no nurse here in here. The nurse would never be coming. Kurumi hadn’t seen her since that day when the world had gone crazy. She hoped that the nurse never showed up again because it would probably mean one more familiar face that Kurumi would have to black out as she swung her shovel.

“How’s it look?” Kurumi looked at Rii.

Rii was at the far side of the bed, bent over and looking at Kurumi’s leg. A hastily torn piece of fabric was wrapped around the left leg. Blood was seeping through and getting everywhere.

“I’m going to have to take the bandage off.”

“Alright.”

Her hands protected by plastic gloves, Rii began removing the bandage. She used scissors to help cut it away so as to disturb Kurumi’s leg as little as possible. Kurumi was using all of her willpower not to scream. She didn’t want the zombies to hear. It would be even worse if Yuki heard.

“No bite. There’s gravel and dirt in it. This one is deeper than you’ve gotten before. I think you’ll need stitches.”

Kurumi grimaced, “That bad, huh?”

“You should be more careful. What if you’d been bit?” Rii’s eyes were kept on Kurumi’s leg. She wasn’t going to look Kurumi in the eyes.

“I know and I know.”

“This is going to hurt.”

“Good thing I have my expert field medic to help me,” Kurumi tried to joke.

Kurumi took off her plastic gloves, careful not to let the blood get on anything, and dropped them into the garbage can. She went back to the medicine cabinet. She searched around for a few minutes, checking labels and pulling down what she needed. From one smaller bottle she produced two white, round pills. She grabbed a bottle of water and moved to Kurumi’s side.

“Take these for the pain.”

They were just some over the counter pain killers that they had found in one of the teacher’s purses, but it helped a small bit with the pain. Kurumi took the offered pills, popped them into her mouth and took a big swig of water. Some of the water dribbled down her face.

Rii threaded a needle and put it in a small bowl. She poured alcohol on it, trying not to waste any but still making sure she got everything. The bowl was placed on a small table near the foot of the bed. Rii put a fresh pair of gloves on and with tweezers also doused in alcohol she began cleaning out Kurumi’s leg.

Kurumi tried to think of something else, anything else. She would succeed in thinking about happier times for a few moments before a new pain would bring her back. Sometimes she’d think about her parents, or her senpai, or the way Rii looked when she was caring for them.

“I’m done cleaning it out. The next part is going to hurt even more.”

Kurumi nodded. She squeezed her eyes shut as the needle pierced her flesh. Her fists clenched at the sides of the bed. There was no way she was going to scream. They were in a part of the school that wasn’t safe yet. It would draw the zombies right to Rii. Kurumi would rather die than let them get to her. It would be even worse if Yuki heard.

Warm lips were pressed against Kurumi’s. Her eyes opened and there was Rii. She reached up and wrapped her arms around the other girl.

“It’s all over,” Rii said softly after their lips parted. She had kept her bloody, gloved hands up and away from Kurumi as they kissed.

“So, we head back?”

“No, I want to wait a little. I’ll put a new bandage on it and then I’ll help you back.”

“Is that all I get for not screaming?” Kurumi had a smile on her face despite the pain.

Rii considered it for a moment before putting one more kiss on Kurumi’s lips. “That’s it. I’m still mad at you for getting hurt.”

“So if I didn’t get hurt…”

Rii gave a small giggle. “You’ll have to wait and find it.”

“I’m holding you to that.”
