“Warden, I…think I understand you. But, Lady Septimus…” she trailed off, trusting that he would understand the question she was not quite asking.
He stiffened. “Lady Septimus is almost certainly dead.”
Palamedes felt his heart constrict as Camilla's initial look of shock melted into understanding and then compassion. She said, with a softness to her voice that she reserved for him alone:
“Things got bad today, Warden, I know. But she was alive when we left her, and we would not have left her at all if we weren't reasonably confident that she would stay that way until morning.”
“That's not exactly what I…The thing is, Camilla, I don't quite have all the pieces arranged yet. I promise I'll explain it all, as much as I can, tomorrow. But for now, can you stay here in this moment with me and leave tomorrow's problems for tomorrow? Would you do that for me?”
She took another step toward him, and now they were close enough for her to feel the heat of his body radiate across the scant space between them.
“I'd do anything you asked of me, Warden.”
