Chapter Text

As they were getting ready for the ceremony, the words that his wife said struck him with a wave of emotions. He knew the words held truth, but he couldn’t bring himself to admit that.

Was he truly nothing more than weight dragging down all those who cared for him—friends, family, and even his wife?

Did everyone just tolerate him?

He looked back on the days when his friends used to tell him that he was difficult to be around. He remembered how he dismissed their words, convinced of his own importance, and now he regrets not listening to them.

His eyes began to fill with small puddles of tears. He released them, but before he could fully grasp the situation, he heard the ceremony starting.

In a hurry, he rushed backstage with his heart pounding, desperately searching for his wife. He held onto the hope of being able to have a conversation with her, yearning to express himself… even though he couldn't quite articulate what it was he needed to say, he just knew he had to reach out to her.

He thought he could figure it out when he saw Amy, talking to Amy always made him feel at ease. But when he saw Amy, he just couldn’t get the words out… afraid of hurting her yet again.

She looked at him, tears started to come out of her eyes as she saw his face… how hurt he looked.

She started to question if what she said was right or not. Was it really needed?

She told herself that Sheldon needed to hear it, the truth that everyone’s been holding inside them for so long, just because they were scared of him.

Before either of them could say anything, they heard a Swedish voice say: “For the discovery of Super Asymmetry…”

Their gazes met, as they looked into each other's eyes filled with pain. They felt a deep sense of pride in their accomplishments and all the effort they put in. Yet, underneath it all, there was a lingering pain that they couldn't shake off.

They accepted their medals and Amy headed to the podium to give her speech. She tried to stop thinking about Sheldon and focus on all the young girls out there who needed to hear that they are also capable of inventing and discovering new things, not just men.

While Amy was orating her speech, Sheldon’s mind was flooded with emotions and thoughts. “Was he really that demanding?”

He knew he made life challenging for his friends and wife, but he didn’t mean it.

Reflecting back on his actions, he didn’t really express his love for his friends and how much they meant to him.

He needed to make things right… It was now or never.

He needed to tell them that they were the most important people in his life.

He looked at Leonard and Penny, how badly and rudely had he reacted to his best friend—no, brother—telling him that he was going to be a father.

The way he mocked Howard for not having a PhD, simply because he was envious of Howard's ability to go to space while he couldn't…

He would make this right.

He would not say his 90 minute, very self-centered speech. He will not boast about himself. He remembered his father telling him, “the most humble men are the most noble men.”

He heard his name being called.

“Drats,” he thought, he missed his wife's speech; he would never forgive himself for that.

“Good job,” he said knowing that the speech must have been good.

He arrived at the podium. All the things he had done wrong in the past, all the things he said that were rude, all of his thoughts encircling him like a dark, suffocating mist, making it hard to breathe or think clearly.

But all he knew was he couldn't boast about himself today. Not today because now, NOW was the time.

The time he would tell them, tell his friends, his wife what they meant to him.

He would make it right.

Chapter Text

The words spoken in the speech… his words… left her unsure of her emotions.

Her heart swelled with pride as her husband took responsibility for his mistakes, but she was overwhelmed with remorse for confessing that he was only tolerated by others… and yet she loved him more than anything.

After they received their award, they had time to themselves… it was decided amongst them that they would go to their bedroom and relax… but that wouldn't be the case.

After the ceremony they went to their room… both of them still unsure what to say.

Usually the silence between them is comfortable, but now, it was just awkward and weird. The tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife.

Both of them had a lot in their mind they wanted to tell the other, but neither of them knew the words and didn’t know how to bring it up.

They reached their room…

“Damn it,” he thought. “Why can’t you apologize to your own wife… she’s the person who made you realize so many things….she’s your wife… the one person you can tell anything.”

“What shall I say to him?” she thought. “Should I apologize? Do I need to apologize? He’s the love of your life, Amy… just say something!”

“Amy,”
“Sheldon,” they both said at the same time.

They let out a sad chuckle.

“You continue,” she said softly, knowing too well he did not like being interrupted.

“Amy,” he began in a gentle tone.

“Amy… I’m sorry for everything. I-I never truly understood the pain I inflicted on the people I care about until now. And Amy, to be honest, I deserved to hear it," he said with deep emotion in his voice.

"You-you didn't, Sheldon... not right before you were about to achieve your dream at least," she murmured with a hint of sorrow in her voice.

“Amy,” he said, holding her hands. “I needed to hear the truth…or I wouldn’t have realized it—”

Amy started to say something, but Sheldon interrupted her.

“No, Amy, please hear me out,” he urged, gripping her hands firmly as they both sat on the bed.

Sheldon had tears in his eyes and was unable to look up as he confessed, “I didn't understand the pain I caused our friends, my family, and especially you, the person I love the most…” He struggled to accept the fact that he had hurt her.
“Sheldon… look at me, please,” she said in an emotional tone.

He looked at her.

“You did hurt people in the past, yes… but that does not mean I don’t love you anymore. I love you more than anything in this world. You said those things, but I know you made up for it and I understand that—”

“Yes Amy, I know, but not everyone is like you… you are understanding and patient but I-I…it’s the fact that I did not tell the people who are the most dear to my heart what they mean to me…”

“They shaped me into who I am today…”

“Leonard is like my brother. He was there for me through everything, no matter how annoying or stubborn I was.”

“And why did I not tell him that I was glad he was having a baby?”

“It’s been his dream to be a father, and I couldn’t even be happy for him. I couldn’t think of anyone else, except me.”

“Penny… she is practically my older sister. She has given me advice that I’ll never forget. She made me see between the black and white lines in situations…”

“And all I cared about was my own health, and was happy she was not contagious.“
“And the others…”

“If it weren’t for Howard, I never would have had the chance to meet Stephen Hawking and actually present my paper to him.”

“If it weren't for Bernadette taking me Christmas shopping, I never would've known how much you meant to me and how much I love you.”

“And Raj… because of him, I met my whole world. You, Amy, are my whole world.”

She was about to cry. She looked him in the eyes. “Sheldon, yes you did hurt many people, and I’m glad that you realize this but as I said you always made up for it—in your own way.” she faltered.

“But I don’t want it to be “my way” anymore. NO, I will not do that anymore… I will change…” he started crying.
“Shh…” she soothed him. “It’s okay. And if you truly know and understand the pain and hurt caused by you and want to change, I’m always here by your side to support you through whatever decision you make.”

“Me too, Amy… you shouldn’t be the only one who makes an effort… I will be there by your side…”

“And Amy,” he said with a look of determination sparking in his eye. “Promise me that you won’t hesitate to tell me if I step out of line and become way too overbearing… I want to change but I’ll need help.” he said with a soft smile.

“Okay, I promise. And Sheldon, we don’t have to figure everything out right now at this moment… we have our whole lives for that.”

They both smiled.

They leaned in to kiss each other… but this was different. This was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives and they both knew that they would always be here for each other… no matter whatever obstacles life presents to them…

They knew that everything would turn out just right.
