Work Text:

There were a few words Japan could use to describe his time as being America's roomate. He has done it a few times actually but his most memorable experience was the first time.

Day 1 of living with japan

It had started a little after the end of world war 2 when they started to end, they realized that japan wasn't doing good at all. He was collapsing, acting and looked sick, he needed help walking around and quite frankly needed help.

Japan tried to keep quiet and not look suspicious but that didn't turn out well when he collapsed in a meeting onto the floor. He felt so embarrassed, he already lost and now this, it was humiliating. The humans couldn't go near him and his government to everyone's surprise didn't want to go near ether so the government asked if another nation could help but the axis couldn't even talk to him and no one else wanted to be near him.

Well almost no one else.

“So dude, this is my awesome house where you will be staying as my roommate for a bit, well technically It’s an apartment. Your room is over there and has a box of stuff you boss sent me that was from your old house. My room is right there although I don't spend too much time in there. I tried to clean and get some stuff I thought you'd like, sorry if it's not too good,” America loudly said as he walked around the small living room pointing at stuff and oversharing about them as he walked to Japan's room to put his bags down.

Japan had no idea why America of all people had volunteered, or why he seemed so happy about it. The nation had left japan alone in his room a bit to get settled in. It was clear that this room used to be for storage due to some of the comics that were on the floor about superheros and stuff like that.

As Japan sat staring at the ceiling contemplating what life choices got him here he heard a knock on the door.

“Yo dude, are you okay? its almost dinner and you've been in here the entire time.” America walks into his room holding some cooking utensil in his hand. He has a look of worry on his face that Japan had not even seen in war.

“I’m f-fine. Can you help me up though.”  MAricas super straight would never be explained to him, maybe he was weak but he was pretty sure he was always this strong. As they walked towards the dining room (with America's help) Japan had the feeling that America was only helping him out of guilt. That was probably right. He knew that America wouldn't do something like that but for some reason something in his head told him something like that.

There was a reason he likes being alone.

“Do you like it? I know it's bad but at least it's not britain's cooking. France says he's glad I didn't get that from him.” America jokes trying to make conversation but it falls on deaf ears.

“Why are you doing this?” Japan looked up from his plate of homemade burgers.

“Because, because…  well i don't want you to be hurt and alone.”

“...”

“I don't know, you were once my friend and now you're hurt because of me and just dealing with everything alone and that kinda suck and what I’m trying to say its because you're my friend.”

“Why am I still your friend?”

“Because you didn't want to do that shit, you were forced to and thought you were standing up for your country. Friends just don't disappear because you fight. Even if it about something really fucked up.”

“B-but”

“I’m going to my room now, call if you need anything.”

Japan sat there contemplating what happened.

Day 4 of living with japan

“Japan I heard a noise are you o- oh my god.” America rushed over to his side and started patting his back in a comforting way.

Japan didn't know what happened. He had just been reading americas comics which he was starting to like a little when he had started coughing and breathing wired, he started choking on something while coughing. When something splattered on the paper he realized.

It was blood.

He was coughing and choking on his own blood.

“ *cough* I’m sorry.”

“Don't be sorry dude just breathe. Darn where did I put his meds?”

“* cough* I ruined your *cough* book.” Japan choked looking down at the blood stained comic that was now unreadable.

“I don't care dude, just don't die.”

Japan got a hold of his breath long enough to stop choking but he could still taste blood.

“Give me a monument and I'll be back.” America left and quickly returned with two glasses of water and some paper towels. He hands Japan a glass to drink and uses the other one to clean up the blood.

“I can clean it,” Japan suggest, but America just gives a look.

“It’s fine you can rest dude. It’s just some blood and you might cough up some more. Just chill.”

“This is so embarrassing. I can do it.”

“It's okay to not do stuff, just chill.” America pushes Japan into a lying down position and takes his water.

“It'll be ok if you take a break.”

Day 12 of living with japan

He couldn't do it, He thought he could do it yet he failed at something so simple.

He and America had gone to a corner store during the afternoon to get some food and America was going to get bread but Japan had volunteered to get it.

He thought he was okay with his cane but halfway walking there he collapsed on the floor. When he awoke he was back in his bead and it was 4:00 already. He looked out the window and started to cry.

He was weak and couldn't do anything right since he failed. He was so done with this embarrassing mess.

What good was there to this.

America walked in the door with a  comic book and a cracker.

“Huh, you're awake. Do you wanna read with me?”

Maybe there was some good.

Last day

“America-san?”

“Yeah dude,” America responded as he helped put japan's bags in his car

“Thank you.”

“No problem, we should do this again sometime so we can read more comics together.”

“Yeah… America.”

“Yeah?’”

“You were a great roommate.”

“You were a good one too.”
