Summary
This is how they behave when they are performing what it might look like to be unobserved. So strange. Strade understands this as insincerity because his steps are always heavy. They know he’s here. Their reaction to being watched is always to force a scene that seems candid. He assumes that this cannot truly be how they act when Strade is not around to see it, but it would be cheating to secretly surveil. But they always do this — play house when Strade is there/not there. Maybe they never stop. Maybe they think he is always watching, even though he never would. Schrödinger’s domesticity.
Thing 2’s eyes have been tailing Strade from the second he came into his range of sight from upstairs. Snapped right onto him with laserfocus the same as a crosshair. It’s always a treat when Thing 2 looks less like a deer and more like something behind a gun.
They make eye contact over Thing 1’s shoulder. Thing 1 finishes what he was doing and doesn’t seem to know what to do with himself. Thing 2 takes on the onus of acknowledging the elephant in the room.
“You’re underdressed.” Thing 2 says to Strade.
