Nii-san, are you packed?" I glanced up from my desk, Okumura-sensei normally didn't address me as his brother during his classes. I understood, for the most part, that it was a respect kind of thing. I glanced around the classroom, everyone else was either working or talking with a friend, leaving me alone with the teal-eyed teacher.
I shifted my gaze up to his and nodded, "yeah, you had me take my bags out to the creeper van this morning, remember?" I wasn't lying when I said that, either. It was a school vehicle, and it had just enough room to fit eight people and their luggage. Like some sort of business van, it was white, with the academy name on the side. Take off a few back windows and you have yourself a pedophilia vehicle.
Yukio's expression didn't change, "did you forget anything?" I blinked a few times, I didn't think so. We weren't taking Kuro with us, but that was decided a few days ago. I gave my twin a puzzled look and he sighed in frustration. "Where's the Kurikara?"
His irritation was starting to eat at me, "Shura took it from me, so she could store it in those weird ass markings."
He seemed to falter, "ah, my mistake," he moved to walk away and I huffed.
"Is that why you wanted to talk to me, to see if I messed up?"
He gave me a dull look, "that's my job, isn't it?"
I huffed and leaned against the back of my chair. It wouldn't kill you to be a little nicer sometimes. I knew that'd be asking a bit much, so I've promised myself to someday prove myself. That way, Yukio would actually see me as an equal instead of a child.
I glanced at the clock, there was only a couple minutes left before we'd be off to Kyoto. Unlike last time, I wasn't as excited to go. Hopefully, unlike last time, there wouldn't be a huge ordeal with powerful demons and what not. This was a simple mission, one that required us to stay at Suguro's again, for a whole week.
My eyes flickered over to Shiemi, who was quietly reading her book. Memories of her, laying beside me after the defeat of the Impure King.... I sighed, I was officially friendzoned, why bother pining over something that would never be?
The bell rang and I jumped, snapping out of my daze. Yukio cleared his throat and went over the details of our trip a final time as we walked out of the room and toward the school garage. When we arrived, Boobzilla was already there, a smirk on her face. "Hey, Chicken, what took so long?" Yukio didn't bother answering her, unlocking the van doors and allowing us all to hop in.
.oOo.
I should've figured things would work out this way. The rest of the boys sat in back, leaving me next to Shiemi, and Izumo next to her. I threw a glare back at Shima, who sat directly behind me. "You guys did this on purpose, didn't you?"
We were already a half hour drive into it, but I was still bitter about the seating arrangement. However, I didn't voice it out loud, because Shiemi was completely oblivious to my distress. Shima gave me an wicked look, "what do you mean?" I grunted and Bon elbowed the pink-haired douchebag. I turned my eyes to the front, which wasn't much except for the back of Shura's head.
"Why are you driving, Yukio? Shouldn't Shura be doing it? She's the adult here..."
"Barely," he scoffed, "from what you know, she's eighteen. That's not much of a difference in age from us." He looked in his rear view mirror before turning his directional on and crossing lanes. "Besides, I'm a better driver than she is."
"Driving's overrated," Shura muttered, her elbow popping up onto the door and her head leaning against her palm. If I could see her expression, I'm sure it would be bored.
Speaking of which, I was exactly that. After what seemed like another hour passed, I yawned. It was sunset, and we wouldn't be arriving in Kyoto until almost midnight. Bon asked that we be quiet when we entered the inn, because everyone would be fast asleep. I wish I was at the moment, it'd pass the time a lot quicker.
"Hey, does anyone have a car charger? My phone's about to die." Bon said and I shook my head, I didn't even have a phone. Yukio and Shura did, though, I knew that much.
"I don't have a phone," Koneko and Shiemi practically said in unison.
"Shit, I forgot my phone in class, ugh!" I cackled, leave it to Shima to forget something like that for a week long trip.
"Here," Izumo tossed back a charger, "I don't have an adapter for the car, however." Yukio flipped open the ashtray under the radio and asked Shura to open the glove compartment. I heard her rustle around and then she handed back a cord.
"What the hell is that?" I grabbed the cord and passed it back to Bon, who plugged the USB end in. Some sort of extension cord?
"Language," Yukio scolded from the driver's seat and I huffed, slouching in my seat.
.oOo.
After yet another half hour, I started to see a few construction signs starting to pass by. It didn't take long before we found out why.
"Damn," Yukio huffed under his breath, and I caught sight of the blocked off road ahead of us.
"Language," I mimicked him from earlier and he shot me a scornful look.
"Not the time, Nii-san." Thankfully, we were one of very few cars on the highway, so Yukio pulled up to a nearby worker. "Excuse me, how long until the road is clear?"
I couldn't see the man, but his throaty voice was audible inside the vehicle, "sorry, sir, but we won't be done for a few hours, yet. If you're heading to Kyoto, you'll need to take the back road off of the I-9." Yukio huffed and thanked the man, pulling away and closing his windows.
"This would've gone smoother if we'd taken the subway." Izumo stated and I could practically hear her eyes rolling through her tone. We would've taken the subway, but I heard Yukio arguing on the phone a few nights ago. Apparently, someone screwed something up, and now we were forced to take the van. Which tacked another two hours onto the usual three hour trip.
Yukio turned on the radio sometime later, allowing us to listen to the sounds of pop. I was thankful for the distraction, seeing as how I had nothing else to do. It was basically black outside, the only light coming from the vehicle's headlights. "What time is it?"
"8:47," multiple voices answered.
"Sheesh, it's so dark out, and no one else is on the highway."
Shima scoffed, "well, no one goes to Kyoto on a Monday night, in the middle of October." Yeah, I had to agree with that, it was getting too cold for tourism.
I heard Izumo shift in her seat, "hey, are you almost done with my charger? My phone just died."
"Uhhh, yeah, give me ten minutes, max."
Suddenly, I felt something hit my shoulder and I jumped. Glancing down, I saw a head of blonde hair, and upon closer inspection, I noticed her eyes were closed. A cackle erupted behind me and I glared at Shima, before something caught my attention. "Hey, where's your seatbelt?"
"What?" Yukio called from the front seat, all sensei-mode. "Renzo-san, please buckle up."
"It doesn't even work, the clicky thing doesn't click." That was a genius response if I've ever heard one.
I rose an eyebrow, "you mean the buckle?"
He waved a hand, "yeah, that thingy, I've tried it like a million times, but it won't work. It's fine, it's not like anything will happen, it's like a one in a million chance."
I huffed and faced forward, "with my rotten luck, we'd be that millionth chance."
"Don't say that, is there any wood to knock on in here?" I was getting tired of Shima's voice. Him and I have been a bit standoffish with each other. I'd heard from Koneko how he'd reacted during our last time in Kyoto and I honestly was offended that Shima would prefer running than to fight for his friends. Maybe it's just me, but that seemed cowardly.
Yukio's phone rang just then and he fished it from his pocket, "hello?" He hummed every once in awhile, eyes never tearing from the road. "Yeah, we won't be there until late... yes, have a good night." He flipped his phone shut and set it on the dashboard, "that was your mother, Suguro-san, she just wanted to make sure we were on our way." I heard Bon hum, bored, "they're all turning in for the night, so everyone remember to be quiet once we arrive."
I grunted in response, my eyes resting on the darkness outside my window. "Huh, I have a few voicemails as well," Shura said, the light from her phone screen illuminating the roof of the van. I wish I had a phone, but someone refuses to let me get one. Without warning, I heard an intake of breath, "Yukio! Deer!"
The car swerved immediately and most of us cried out. I looked out the front window and saw Yukio narrowly miss the animal, spinning the wheel to enter a narrow dirt road. "Slow down, Yukio!" We were going at least fifty-five miles per hour, and the slender lane was too hazardous at the speed.
The van swiveled back and forth, "my foots to the floor!" He spat, Shura cussed and grabbed onto the wheel, yanking it so we didn't run into the ditch. "What the fuck do-" the brakes caught on, but not how any of us were hoping. A screeching noise erupted from the back axel and the van started to shift to the side, way too quickly.
"Yukio!" I cried, my eyes darting out the window, just in time to see a tree rapidly approaching, headed straight for my door.
