Work Text:
Waking up after being killed by your little sister was not something that happened everyday.
Despite the fact that he'd already died in a thousand different ways, this one was a first for him. All those other times the matter had been taken by his own hands - knives, guns, poison, plane crashes, jumping out of buildings. The two times that Bonnie had killed him, although it had felt different (good, even) to have another person to do the dirty job, he knew he'd come back. Even if a part of him hoped that he wouldn't.
No, this time was different because he was not supposed to come back, this was the real world. Was it some safety spell that the Gemini coven had cast? If the leader dies, everyone else does too, so maybe they had this little trick up their sleeve just in case.
"Damon, I gave him my blood, you don't understand."
"Maybe this will be different with him, maybe his freak leader abomination thingy will give him a free pass to the land of the dead. I don't know, Elena! You didn't need to bring him to our bed."
Our bed? Opening his eyes and feeling his surroundings, Kai realized that he was in Damon's bedroom. What a nice change from that 1994's old mattress.
A couple of hours later he found himself drinking blood from a plastic bag while worried brown eyes watched him intently. That's right, Elena Gilbert was giving him permission to turn, despite the fact that he'd tortured her. What a good girl.
"We can't let you die yet, you need to help us bring Bonnie back. You're the only one who can. And this is the only reason that I'm allowing you to drink blood."
That was what she'd said, and he almost laughed in her face. Everything he heard about her was accurate - this girl should win a prize for rescuing reformed (or not) psychopaths and monsters.
He never intended on accepting the transition, but he didn't want to die either. Liv wasn't going to win so easily. Being a monster, a killer, was not a problem. A small, hidden, part of him was glad to become part of something, to be something else other than unique.
Three days later and the sharp pain from when his teeth pierced his own gum was still there. "It will fade out soon, no more than a week." He had been spending almost all of his days and nights with Elena, she was teaching him how to feed, how to behave. They hadn't given him a daylight ring (yet), so they were hunting at night. She didn't want to teach him how to compel people (but he had figured it out by himself, of course), and thus these lessons were only supposed to be for a worst case scenario if he ended up alone somehow, he wouldn't lose control.
Kai could've ran away - it was not like they were keeping him locked up with chains -, but truth be told he enjoyed the company. She was a messy teacher, sometimes she would just sleep the whole day after one night out, leaving Kai bored out of his mind. She was too kind with the people they drank from, and too harsh with him.
He liked it.
And he liked even more the fact that this was creating problems with Damon, so much that he was spending less and less time at the Boarding House and more time at Alaric's apartment. It made Kai feel proud, somehow. It was probably a vampire thing, a predatory thing, but it made him happy that Elena chose to spend time with him.
Almost like she was his.
