Penelope held out the pamphlet, her hands trembling slightly as she stretched her arms toward him. “Read this,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I wrote it last night. It’s the latest Whistledown issue, set to be published tomorrow.”
She turned her back on him, unable to watch his reaction. Crossing the room, she leaned against the desk, trying to keep her voice steady as she explained. “I’m letting you read it first to ensure that everything written is agreeable to you. It won’t tarnish your reputation. It also won’t ruin mine. It will simply free us from this…” She gestured vaguely between them, the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air. “This arrangement.”
For a moment, there was silence. She could hear the rustle of paper as Colin unrolled the pamphlet and began to read.
The silence stretched on, too long, too thick. And then, Colin’s voice cut through it, low and trembling with barely suppressed anger.
“What the fuck is this?”
