Summary
In this world are many beings of myth, but none more threatening to the populace than vampires. The Institution-- a group of oathsworn hunters blessed with powers to contend with these violent bloodsuckers-- hunt them without remorse. Deep in the woods of Coerthas is a castle thought to be abandoned for centuries, but local gossip in Ferndale has spread hearsay of a vampire allegedly making the location its abode. One Estinien Varlineau is an accomplished hunter; a man with many fangs plucked from the jaws of his sworn enemy. He declares that he himself will dispatch the wretch from this living realm to protect his home. What he anticipates is a cold, selfish beast like any other, what he doesn't expect is the strangest-- dare he say kindest-- creature he'd ever pursued.
Torn between executing the pacifistic monster or simply observing it for valuable information, the hunter finds himself at a total standstill.
