February 11, 1999, Animal Junction

Chris and Martin get lost

Notes:

Work Text:

Chris and Martin are exploring the dense, misty forest near Animal Junction, their walkie-talkies in hand. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the sounds of rustling leaves. They're on a mission to find a rare species of leaping lemur, but the forest seems to be playing tricks on them when they get separated.

"Martin, do you copy?" Chris calls into his walkie-talkie, but there's only static in response. He frowns and tries again. "Martin, come in!"

Martin, a short distance away, is also trying to reach Chris. "Chris, can you hear me? Over!" But all he gets is the same frustrating static.

The brothers realize their walkie-talkies aren't working in this part of the forest. Chris decides to head back to Animal Junction, hoping to find Martin on the way. The forest is starting to feel a bit eerie, with shadows dancing in the dim light. Chris hears a rustling in the bushes and jumps, his heart racing.

"Who's there?" he calls out, but there's no response. He shakes his head, telling himself it's just the wind.

Martin is also making his way back, his steps cautious. He hears a faint whisper and spins around, but there's nothing there. "Must be my imagination," he mutters, but the forest seems to be growing darker and more mysterious with each step.

Chris continues to walk, his eyes darting from side to side. He hears a twig snap behind him and whirls around, but again, there's nothing. He starts to feel a bit unnerved. "This place is giving me the creeps," he mutters to himself.

Martin, too, is feeling the spookiness. He hears a low growl and freezes, his heart pounding. "Zoboomafoo?" he calls out, hoping it's just their lemur friend.

But there's no answer, and the growl seems to fade away. He shakes his head, trying to stay calm. As Chris and Martin continue to make their way through the forest, they both start to feel a sense of relief as they see the familiar signs of Animal Junction in the distance. But just as they are about to step out of the forest, their backpacks bump into each other.

"Whoa!" Chris exclaims, jumping back. "Martin, is that you?"

Martin spins around, equally surprised. "Chris! You scared me half to death!"

They both laugh, the tension of the forest melting away. The leaping lemur who has been following them leaps out from behind a tree and lands between them, laughing joyfully.

"Zo-BOOM-a-foo!" he cries, his laughter echoing through the forest.

Chris and Martin look at each other and burst out laughing. "That was a close one," Chris says, still catching his breath.

"Definitely," Martin agrees, patting Zoboomafoo on the head. "But we made it back together, and that's what matters."

Zoboomafoo grins, his tail swishing happily. "Zo-BOOM-a-foo!" he repeats, clearly enjoying the reunion.

Chris and Martin, with Zoboomafoo by their side, make their way back to Animal Junction, the spookiness of the forest now a shared adventure that only brought them closer together.
