Finally Living Up to Its Hype (1999)

Summary:

March 1999, American Embassy, Paris, France

Allyson and Melanie meet Jean and Michel while taking in the sights

Work Text:

The aroma of freshly baked croissants and strong coffee wafts through the bustling Parisian café as Melanie and Allyson, still a bit stiff in their 'appropriate' lunch attire, pick at their salads.

Allyson, ever the more pessimistic, sighs, "This is, like, so boring. I thought Paris was supposed to be exciting, not a daily dress-up party."

Melanie, always quick to find the silver lining (especially if it involves shopping), counters, "Well, at least the clothes are cute. And maybe we'll see some cute French boys later?"

Just then, a vision in sleek designer clothes glides past their table, her laughter like a chime. She has shimmering blonde hair and eyes that sparkle with life. It’s Brigitte, a model, and she’s absolutely stunning.

Brigitte stops, a friendly smile lighting her face. "Bonjour, mes petites! You look a little lost in all this Parisian chic."

Allyson, usually reserved, blurts out, "We're from America! And yeah, our grandpa is the Ambassador, but we haven't seen anything cool."

Brigitte winks, "Ah, the Ambassador! Très important. But Paris is more than just museums and fancy dinners. I can show you my Paris, if you like."

Melanie's eyes widen, "Really? That would be, like, totally amazing!"

A shared, silent look passes between the twins – a rare moment of complete agreement. This is exactly what they've been waiting for. As they chat, two motor scooters zip to a stop outside, their riders expertly balancing huge floral arrangements. Jean and Michel, both with tousled hair and smiles that could melt butter, dismount. They're delivery boys, but they look like movie stars.

Jean, with a shy grin, approaches Melanie, offering a single, perfect red rose. Michel, bolder, hands Allyson a vibrant pink one, his gaze lingering. Allyson blushes, giggling. Melanie, not to be outdone, twirls her rose, catching Jean's eye.

"Merci," she says, her American accent making the word sound even sweeter.

The boys exchange quick, hopeful glances before zipping off, leaving the scent of roses and a flutter in the girls' chests. The twins lock eyes again, no longer bored, but buzzing with a new, shared excitement. Paris is finally living up to its hype.
