Oscar’s favorite part of his “super”-senses if anyone asks isn’t the strength or durability, the speed or the crystal clear vision or even the spidey-sense –although those are all greatly appreciated– if anyone asks he always answers his hearing.
If asked why he always answers because he loves being able to tell apart everything from each other, to hone in on background noise and find sources for danger etc. It’s not a lie but it’s not the entire truth either.
See the reason Oscar loves his enhanced hearing is because of moments like these, when his senses wakes up just a few seconds before his mind does. When he floats in the state between awake and asleep and is kept there just a bit longer by the familiar beats of Daniel’s heart next to his own, the slow breaths that reminds him vaguely of a soft breeze when standing on on top of a skyscraper.
Deciding to take advantage of the day ahead Oscar regretfully forces himself to leave his bliss and fully wake up. This is when his vision comes in handy, blinking open his eyes he has a direct view of Daniel’s peaceful face. Only ever this calm when the other is asleep, so Oscar has a habit of letting him get as much rest as he can when they’re together if not for his sake then for Oscar to fully take in the sight.
The way Daniel’s lips are slightly parted, eyes moving a bit behind his eyes like even in sleep something needs to happen. Everything else is slack and on display every freckle, every hair, every hint of stubble. Oscar takes in the angle of his nose, the perfect cupid's bow he loves to kiss and every mole he admires with a soft touch whenever he gets the opportunity.
He’d feel weird about it if Daniel didn’t do the same, and has admitted it more than once. It warms something deep in Oscar’s chest to know his feelings, as big and terrifying as may be, are reciprocated to the same intense degree. Maybe it’s codependency, maybe it’s soulmates, whatever it is it works.
Oscar closes his eyes on a singular breath, focusing on the touch of Daniel’s skin on his own where their legs are tangled together. Where Daniel’s arm is probably half asleep under Oscar’s head, his other hand carefully placed between them for Oscar to look at and admire while he’s at it. He traces the tattoos that are visible and fights a flush remembering all the ways he’s allowed to do that, knows the shapes and lines more intimately than anyone ever will. He’s aware of how possessive it makes him to think like this, truthfully he doesn’t care. Why should he?
“I can feel you staring,” Oscar doesn’t answer the raspy mumble, only turns his head to place a kiss on the inside of Daniel’s elbow making his lips twitch in the ghost of a smile. Clearly not all that awake yet himself.
“Are you leaving?” It’s not an uncommon assumption given their profession but it still stings, just like sneaking out of bed or leaving for an unknown amount of time because of –well, always does.
Oscar shakes his head, knows Daniel feels his nose rubbing against his arm as the ghost dissipates and is replaced by a real smile. One of pure contentment.
“Good.” There’s a sleepy sigh and then the arm under Oscar moves, forcing him closer while the other pulls him in by his hip. Oscar hides his giggle against Daniel’s neck, a hand runs through his hair and they just lay together for a while.
Every slow run of fingers through his hair combined with the way Daniel defaults into rubbing his back whenever they’re close almost lulls Oscar back to sleep, or at least back to that blissful state between awake and asleep. Maybe he can stay here for a while. After all, Daniel isn’t going anywhere today either. Yeah… He’ll stay here for now.
Later he’ll make breakfast and drag Daniel out for some lame couples activity but right now, right here, he’ll enjoy the moment. Enjoy the way Daniel’s breath hits the shell of his ear, sounding and feeling much like a soothing breeze on a hot day while his heart beats in time with Oscar’s, like they’re connected in the most intricate way. Oscar likes to imagine they are, likes to picture the thread between them, always present. He thinks Daniel does too, or at least hopes he does. He’ll ask him when he’s ready to wake again… Not yet.
