Work Text:

Chain feels sick.

The taste of alcohol is bitter, all of a sudden, or maybe it’s just bile rising back up his throat, and he pushes away from the bar, trying to find a corner to throw up into without getting yelled at. He doesn't even have hands guiding him today because he decided to come out alone and it just makes him feel vaguely lonely and even sicker because he's all alone and the smell of something horrible hits him and he realizes he's in the bathroom and promptly hurls.

The dizziness doesn't quite subside even after he's done emptying the contents of his stomach, though, and Chain slowly backs out of the bathroom, bumping into someone, and feels a cool breeze of air coming from somewhere and he makes a beeline for it because the noise of the bar is overwhelming, all of a sudden, and he blinks and suddenly Chain is outside, gasping in the night air and blinking back tears.

He feels. So shitty.

A small laugh escapes him because this situation is so bizarre. Chain is supposed to be the one who’s marginally more sensible, the one who keeps their plans together. But - well. He thinks he might have earned this, because it’s been such a long day.

He had spent all morning helping Pun with a project, because of course he’d left it to the last minute, and while copying and pasting links into the bibliography he’d paused because Pun was exhausted from staying up all night and was falling asleep, and he was almost leaning over the desk, falling asleep just sitting there, and Chain had found him cute and then he’d paused because this was Pun, not some girl - and then Pun had startled awake and lifted his head, smiled at Chain sleepily and reached out to pat his head for some reason, and that -

Well.

Chain had to come to terms with the fact that he was well and truly in romantic love with his best friend of 13 years while sitting in said best friend’s room and helping him with his project. So surely Chain was justified in just a little bit of insanity, because his entire worldview had shifted slightly and he wasn’t entirely sure how to deal with it.

God. This is so embarrassing, and so unlike him. All of a sudden, Chain just feels tired.

A small noise startles Chain out of his spiral, and he opens his eyes (he’d closed them?) to see a cat. It stares up at him from a safe distance away, gaze watchful and wide. It looks like it’s waiting for something, though Chain doesn’t have anything to give it. He doesn’t -

He doesn’t have anything more left he can give to Pun. He even has Chain’s heart.

It’s an oddly comforting realization, though something about it also feels - well -

Chain starts crying.

The cat seems to startle at the sudden noise, and jumps back a few paces, before cautiously padding closer again. It pins its ears back and stares up and Chain, and it just. He just.

"'re you okay?" he asks the cat, slurred through tears, but really it's more of a question for himself, because he doesn't know how he's going to survive this at all.

Fuck.
