it’s my job to protect him

Summary:

Giorno and Mista have to arrange Bruno’s funeral, and deal with an unexpected trial.

Work Text:

It was hard to stare at a coffin and consider it a person. Especially when they had it closed.

Bruno was unable to be given a comfortable open casket funeral. The others were, just as much, mourned, but Narancia and Abbacchio were unable to be properly recovered. Bruno was at least able to recovered and to be buried, and not just given a tombstone with nothing below it.

Mista had stood there both times while
Giorno bribed and bargained with the men involved in Bruno's funeral plans. The first was getting a death certificate: after looking up Bruno's proper information, the death certificate was first returned with the proper surname, but everything else was incorrect. (In the sense that it was legally correct—Gianna Esme Maria Bucciarati, a female, was a legally recognized person, but Bruno Bucciarati, a male, was not.) Giorno ended up shelling out a lot of money to have the information changed.

Then, once the death certificate was handed over to the mason, Giorno was trying to get him an elaborate grave. Not in the sense that Bruno would have a huge monument to himself, but in the sense that it should have a beauty to it. They decided on a white marble with black accents, and the letters were coated in a shimmering gold. It was just like Bruno had colored himself in life.
The funeral was... sad, as to be expected. It was rather quiet, aside from both the priest's words before Bruno was sealed beneath the Earth and the soft tears of those who attended. These were quite a few people there-more than Mista had expected-but a notable empty chair near the front.

He met her afterwards. A woman with long dark hair, tied back, and dressed in a decidedly bright outfit. (It was almost obscene. To be wearing bright colors to a funeral.) At her side, two young children-most definitely a set of twins, maybe seven or eight-clung to her skirt and stared down as she spoke. Mista stood silently as she argued with Giorno. Words about how they were disgracing her daughter. How she was grieving, too, but she couldn't ever fully heal knowing what they had done.

Giorno looked up at Mista after she had left. "...Mista."

He looked down. "Hmm?"

"Go protect Bruno. Just for the night."

That night, Mista sat and slept by a headstone, and woke up in the morning to repaint the delicate letters inscribed in gold.
